Apostles of Disunion, written by Charles B. Dew, is a book that focuses on the topics of Slavery, States’ rights, and Secession. The introduction chapter of the book talks about how Dew grew up as a “son of the south”, and how his ancestors fought for the confederacy. He talks about how he went to school in Virginia and he packed his Confederate flag to hang on his wall. Dew says that he didn’t think much about secession, however, he knew that the south had seceded for the lonely reason of states’ rights.
With the pressure following the passage of the Kansas Nebraska Act, many northerners opposed slavery and were concerned with the possibility of its expansion. In 1856, these northerners formed a new political party called the Republican Party. Once Abraham Lincoln was nominated as the Republican candidate, the South began making plans to secede from the union if Lincoln was elected as President of the United States. In the “South Carolina Declaration of Causes of Secession”, delegates state, “A geographical line has been drawn across the Union, and all the States north of that line have united in the election of a man to the high office of President of the United States, whose opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery. ”15
Moreover, Congressman Bonham argued that slavery was a “moral, social, and political blessing” and that it would “be preserved in or out of the Union.” Lastly, slavery was the foundation of Southern identity and was South Carolina’s official cause of secession, not fears of white slavery, and not fears of political slavery in a nebulous republican cosmology. Uncompromising differences between the South (Confederacy) and the North (Union) created a civil war that lasted five years. During this war, Abraham Lincoln was president. His election led to the secession of many Southern states. After refusing to recognize the Confederacy as its own nation, the American Civil War commenced in 1861. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were industrial and agricultural economies, politics, and slavery.
The Civil War, fought between 1861 and 1865, had a profound impact on the role of the federal government in the United States. During this period, the country underwent significant changes in race relations, economic development, and westward expansion. In this essay, we will examine how the role of the federal government changed in relation to race relations and economic development. One of the most significant changes in race relations during the period of 1861-1877 was the abolition of slavery.
The period of the Civil War can be classified as one of the bloodiest and tumultuous in the history of the United States. Between 1961 and 1965 more than one million people perished on the battlefield due to an ideology that divided the continental United States. With the defeat of the Confederate secessionist states, the abolition of slavery, and the new amendments incorporated into the constitution, the geopolitical and social history of the young American nation changed utterly. Within the multiple events that occurred during this period of time, I consider that the most significant was the permanence of the federated union.
In the months following the election of Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States, seven southern states seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. This was done primarily as a response to Lincoln’s election, as Lincoln did not support the institution of slavery, a crucial aspect of Southern society. Secession from the United States meant that these states would form a separate country from the United States with its own government and military. Some have speculated that secession was failure in democracy, that democracy should have prevented such a large part of the United States to be so unhappy with its government that it would form a new country. The Northern states, who did not rely on slavery for their economy, were anti-slavery and hence wanted all the nation to be such. The Southern states vehemently opposed this view, as their flow of money relied almost entirely on the use of slave labor. This extreme divide among the people roused talk of division in America. Stephens argues that “slavery and white supremacy were not only the cause for secession, but also the “cornerstone” of the Confederate nation.” He also states, quoting Jefferson: “(this is the) rock upon which the old Union would split”, referring to the existence of African slavery.
After, The Supreme Court’s confirmation on the legality of slavery in the territories convinced a lot of Southerners that the Northern was seeking the destruction of the “peculiar institution” that was sustained, which made the Southern, and Northern ties almost on its last straw. Then Lincoln’s election was the final straw, and made seven of the Southern states seceding from the United States. When the Civil War was over The Union won even though their armies weren’t as great as the South’s they managed a close victory possibly because of The Union’s sheer number of troops, but even though The Union won they lost a great leader, Abraham Lincoln who was assassinated by a Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes which turned the hearts of the people of the United States dearly, thus ending the American Civil War at a cost of 620,000 soldiers from both sides, plus a great leader Abraham
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
No matter your stance at the time, one thing became clear: socially, politically and economically, slavery was the fabric of American success and gave birth to the Old South as we know it today. At the center of the entire institution of slavery, and central to its defense, was the economic domination it provided a young country in international markets. In the early 19th century, cotton was a popular commodity and overtook sugar as the main crop produced by slave labor. The production of cotton became the nation’s top priority; America supplied ¾ of the cotton supply to the entire world.
After the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and the rise of the Republican party, Southerners feared the tipping of the balance of political power against them; their need for self-determination parallel the colonists’ belief of rebelling against the oppressive government of Great Britain. However, the Civil War represented something more: the clash of the feudalistic, agrarian South with the industrialized, capitalistic North. These two powers differed socially, politically, and economically, and were especially conflicted over slavery. These two sections of the United States were divided against one another, and could not survive this way. Therefore, it is more accurate to state that though the Civil War resembled some aspects of the American Revolution, it was a clash between two forces who could not exist with one another in their current state, leading inevitably to conflict between the
Imagine if the cotton businesses had no slaves the Southerners would have to create their own factories, for example, if they did have to create their own industry, they would have to sell all their slaves and that’s one of the last things that they wanted to do. If the South had no slaves, they would have to do everything all by themselves. According to page 242 it says " planters would have had to sell slaves to raise the money to build factories, most wealthy southerners had their wealth invested in land and slaves. Planters would have had to sell slaves to raise the money to build factories. Most wealthy southerners were unwilling to do this.
There were a few events preceding the South’s secession that were not directly related to the South’s secession. One of these events is the Adams-Onis treaty. This treaty gave Florida to the United States and changed the borders of the United States. Another event is the tariff of abominations. The events I believe were most responsible for the South’s secession were the Crittenden Compromise and the Charles Sumner speech and results.
