Rajasthan is the largest state of India having different weather and soil conditions consisting of different agro-climatic situations which helps the state for diversified cropping pattern. Rajasthan is the second largest group of Livestock in India and is contributing about more than 10% in milk production of India. The state is also the largest producer of Bajra, Mustard, Spices like Cumin, Coriander, Chillies, Fennel, Fenugreek, Ginger, Isabgol , Cluster Beans and ranks at second largest producer of Maize. There is a major belt of Vegetables in Rajasthan. 1.6 General Description of Fenugreek:
Fenugreek is a native to West Asia and South En. Europe. Fenugreek is the ripened fruit of an annual herb having light green leaves and is 30-60 cm tall producing 10-15cm long pod. Each pod contains 10-20 small yellowish brown seeds, about 3mm long. In India, it is mainly grown in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Fenugreek is a cold season crop and is tolerant to very low temperature and frost. It can be grown in all kinds of soils and also black cotton soils but can grow even better in loam and clayey loam with proper drainage.
In foods, Fenugreek is used as an ingredient in Spice mixture (Garam Masala). Fenugreek is also used as flavoring agent in tobacco, food & beverages.
