Whiteford, Ferrari, Degenhardt, Feigin, and Vos (2015) stated, “Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are a leading cause of the disease burden worldwide, substantially contributing to health loss across the lifespan” (p. 8). Reasons for the prevalence of substance abuse are multi-factorial. Those who use, or abuse, frequently suffer from a multitude of other problems, such as physical diseases, mental disorders, and dysfunctional familial, social, and financial …show more content…

The study by Murphy-Oikonen, Brownlee, Montelpare & Gerlach (2010) identified common themes nurses reflected on being a personal struggle in the NICU. Frustration, burnout, barriers to parenting values, and awareness of community drug use were included in the study’s findings of common themes among nurses in the NICU. An example of a challenge to values in professional caring includes the nurse’s attitudes toward the family’s decisions and socioeconomic status, which can be influenced by knowledge gaps and difficulties in communication. Another challenge to professional caring includes encompassing all “medical, legal, social, and economic perspectives” (Savin, 2015, p. 21). Professionals and the larger society conflict over whether to approach the abuse issue punitively or supportively (Savin, 2015).
Some areas in the United States face higher rates of crime and drug abuse. This contributes to the prevalence of health disparities within different communities. In order to eliminate or decrease the distinct difference between areas that are at higher health risks than others one must begin to understand why they exist. Some areas have higher drug abuse rates than others due to factors such as poor education, poverty, unemployment rates, and lack of community involvement. These things play a major role in whether or not a young adult is going to start the use of drugs or drinking alcohol.
While most people agree that excessive use of alcohol is inappropriate, and that recreational use of drugs is usually illegal, most process addictions are viewed merely as extreme cases of fundamentally acceptable behavior (GCU, 2013). Everyone must eat, and most people need to shop and work. Recreational gambling is not intrinsically a bad thing, and many consider sex to be essential to health. As difficult as it is for society to subscribe wholly to the disease model of SUD, it is even more difficult to think that a person can really be addicted to commonplace activities. Indeed, PA seems to be more a question of morality than of mental health in the eyes of the
The efficacy of appropriate treatment for addiction disorder and substance abuse may be determine by drug and alcohol counselors, primary healthcare providers, social workers, and others. Therefore, it is necessary for competent and those properly trained to utilize the necessary tools needed for proper assessments, diagnosis, treatment planning and future referrals. Careful selection on these instruments may be influenced by cultural, race, and gender (Van Wormer & Davis, 2018). Furthermore, counselors or other clinicians would also need to consider the reliability and validity these instruments prior to selection.

Courtney Grove Addictions/Assessments/Interventions Spring 2017 All of the personal stories in this book are an attempt to help individuals identify with the authors. Hopefully, after reading each story we, and alcoholics alike may say to themselves "I'm very much like _____. My alcohol use has followed a similar pattern and I have also tried different ways to control my drinking with similar, pained results. Perhaps the steps that _______ followed will work for me also.” This keeps the sneaky pull of alcohol at the forefront of their minds, learning from the experiences of others and remembering their own experiences from the reality standpoint rather than with fond remembrance.
In today’s society, substance abuse is a serious issue that has many explanations as to why it occurs. Peer pressure, boredom, rebellion, etc., are all common examples of why a person uses drugs and alcohol but there is more depth to it. Individuals will often get blamed or judged on the actions they perform and do not usually think of society itself as a factor. There are relatively stable patterns of social relations that contribute to the values and decisions of humans. Three levels of social structures that surround and permeate us are macrostructures, microstructures, and patriarchy.
