3885 Wednesday Wars March “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. ”- Winston Churchill. In the novel The Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmidt, the protagonist, Holling Hoodhood, has a friend named Mai Thi from a Vietnam, she is a refugee. Mrs. Bigio, a teacher from their school, Camillo Junior High, got news from the war saying her husband was supposedly dead.
I read the book called the Wednesday wars by Gary D. Schmidt. The book is about a boy named Holling Hoodhood who is in seventh grade and his teacher, Mrs. Baker. The story takes place mainly in school or at Holling’s home. The first main event is when Holling finds out he is the only one that doesn't leave school early on Wednesdays because of Hebrew school or catechism. Also, when Holling let the rats go, it caused a lot of trouble through the story.
Yuri Kochiyama is a Japanese-American civil rights activist, and author of “Then Came the War” in which she describes her experience in the detention camps while the war goes on. December 7th, is when Kochiyama life began to change from having the bombing in Pearl Harbor to having her father taken away by the FBI. All fishing men who were close to the coast were arrested and sent into detention camps that were located in Montana, New Mexico and South Dakota. Kochiyama’s father had just gotten out of surgery before he was arrested and from all the movement he’d been doing, he begun to get sick. Close to seeing death actually, until the authorities finally let him be hospitalized.

In the book “The Wednesday Wars” Mr.Kowalski takes the drawing of Holling’s father’s design and blends it with his own. Holling’s action’s changed the balance on the scale for his father, because Mr.kowalski now might win the competition for the junior high school contract. After the board meeting Kowalski and associates withdrew their model from the debate because Mr.Kowalski probably knew that he was doing the wrong thing for himself and the school board.
James M. McPherson is the Author of the Book entitled What They Fought 1861-1865 For, in his introduction McPherson explains that he “…carved from research for a larger book tentatively entitled Why They Fought.” (McPherson, 1994) This is a book that elucidates the attitude of the soldiers that fought during the Civil War, it discusses their Honor and courage, masculinity, discipline, religion, their fear, pain, and death among others. In his synopsis, McPherson says that his book “…gives voice to the very men who risked their lives in this struggle and places them in the great and terrible choir of a country dived against itself.” (McPherson, 1994)
In chapter one of What They Fought For, I learned about the letters and diaries of the Confederate soldiers. The themes of the letters were home-sickness, lack of peace, and the defense of home against their invading enemy. The thought of soldiers fighting for their homes and being threatened by invaders, made them stronger when facing adversity. Many men expressed that they would rather die fighting for a cause, than dying without trying and this commitment showed patriotism. Throughout the letters, soldiers claimed their reason for fighting, was for the principles of Constitutional liberty and self-government.
Throughout the book wednesday war holling is influenced by mrs.baker, the yankee players that played catch with him,and then shakespeare, romeo and juliet. One main influence in Holling’s life was Mrs Baker. I think the biggest thing she did was just being there for him when his dad was not. In the 1950s, Texas was at the forefront of two major, but very different civil rights movements—the African-American movement and the Mexican-American movement. Fighting Their Own Battles by Brian Behnken describes and compares the separate battles for rights of the two movements. People in Texas knew what was happening and newspapers reported about the different events that occurred throughout the 1950s. In hindsight, and with the help of Behnken’s book, one is able to see the subtle influences of both civil rights movements in the Texas newspapers. At the time however, these differences in strategy between the African-American and Mexican-American movements were not so easily understood.
Jill Lepore used quotes and images from English colonists and portraits to show how colonists wrote about their experiences during King Philip’s War and how the narrative of the war has changed throughout the centuries. It also sets how colonists will narrate wars for future centuries. She spoked about how their writings of the war had a consequence of temporally silencing the Native Americans version on the war and how people have forgotten or even have any knowledge of the war. She uses a Boston merchant, Nathaniel Saltonstall account tilted “A true but brief account of our losses since this cruel and mischievous war begun” written in July 1676 year after the war had begun. He lists towns such as Narragansett, Warwick, Seekonk and Springfield
Coffman, Edward. The War to End All Wars. New York: Oxford University Press, 1968 “The War to End All Wars: The American Military Experience in World War I” by Edward M. Coffman writes from the point of view of the soldiers who were actually involved in the battles of World War I. Coffman set out to write a history of the American military experience in World War I, it was apparent he had two major goals in writing this book “The War to End All Wars: The American Military Experience in World War I.” He starts by telling us how American was not prepared and appeared to be confused in many aspects of the war.
It is sometimes difficult for individuals to settle the discrepancy between truth and illusion, and consequently they drive others away, by shutting down. Mrs. Ross, in The Wars by Timothy Findley, is seen as brittle while she is attending church, and cannot deal with the cruel reality of the war and therefore segregates herself from the truth by blacking it out. As a result, she loses her eyesight, and never gets to solve the clash between her awareness of reality and the actuality of the world. She hides behind a veil, and her glasses to distance herself from reality. Mrs. Davenport has to wheel her around in Rowena’s chair to keep her awake, so she doesn’t harbour up subconscious feeling within her dreams, which she is unable to deal with.
A War of Self In his novel, A Separate Peace, Knowles uses the story of Gene Forrester to examine a dark aspect of human nature. Gene Forrester, the novel’s protagonist, fights an inner battle of jealousy and hatred towards his best friend, Phineas. Phineas, an athlete, charismatic charmer, and fearless boy is someone that Gene wishes he could be. Gene creates an enemy out of Phineas in his mind because of the “competition” that is their friendship.
A Separate Peace The novel “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles mainly talks about the relationship between two adolescents, Gene and Finny who were best friends and roommates during the World War II. The plot takes place at the Devon School in New Hampshire during a wartime. The two boys went on lots of adventures together and went through some ups and downs too. . As reading this piece one of the main themes that highlights the story is what rivalry and jealousy can cause to a friendship.
A Psychoanalysis on The Wars In human history, war has greatly affected the lives of people in an extremely detrimental way which can be understood in Timothy Findley’s novel The Wars through a psychoanalytic approach in character development and their deterioration; the readers are able to identify the loss of innocence intertwined between characters, the search for self-identity in the symbolic and metaphorical aspect, as well as the essence of life. Those that are not able to overcome these mental challenges may develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Rape trauma Syndrome, and sadly, some resort to suicide as the last option to escape their insecurities. The book The Best War Ever, by Michael C. C. Adams, is about World War II, the events that led up to the war, and the years following the war. Adams starts the book off explaining some myths that people have about the war. The biggest myth associated with the war is that it was the best war ever. Adams then spends the rest of the book talking about why this may or may not be true. In the following chapters, Adams explains the events that led to the war and the events that accorded during World War II.
