The 2012 movie Beasts of the Southern Wild, director Benh Zeitlin’s debut movie, sees 6-year-old Hushpuppy living with her father Wink in a remote village called the Bathtub. When Wink mysteriously falls ill, it seems that mother nature falls ill with him, with temperatures rising, ice caps melting, and rising waters threatening the Bathtub and its community. In one key sequence, the aftermath of the flood shows Wink and Hushpuppy searching for survivors, and eventually finding some at the local pub. Once safe from the flooding outside, Wink and Hushpuppy hunker down at the pub and reminisce about Hushpuppy’s mama. In this scene, there is a strong theme of change and loss, shown through the key symbol of hope represented by Hushpuppy’s mama.
The black cat seems to me to symbolize many different things. I feel that the everytime she sees that cat it’s a warning that something bad is soon to happen. I feel that the black cat also represents reincarnation and when Sophia is not there as a ghost or in spirit she is secretly a lonely, dark cat that tries to scare everyone around her. Claudia talks about how means and vigorous Gordon is once he found his fossil. She says that “he would not let her go past to get higher.”
The painting contains quite a small bird which can be translated to a powerless and weak figure that can be related to Marion since she is the weak and helpless character in this film being prey upon by Norman who is seen besides hawks in certain scenes. The painting is placed right outside of the bathroom in which Marion is killed showing that the bathroom was the trap for her while Norman, the hawk in this case, killed her in the shower. The painting reflects Marion’s personality as weak and powerless and foreshadows that something wrong was going to happen to Marion similar to the Susannah and The Elders painting. The painting symbolizes Marion since the bird in the painting is also small, powerless, and weak. The painting does an effective job in letting the viewer relate bird to Marion and foreshadows her death since Norman in placed in scenes with bigger birds like a hawk.
For example, the red ribbon represents Mattie as a strong person because she does not show that she wants what she cannot have. Mattie soon realizes she wants the protagonist, Ethan Frome. After he takes cover of what she tried to take cover of the pickle dish breaking. Zeena finds the broken pickle dish and assumes Mattie breaks it, so she makes her leave. Ethan insists on taking her to the train station so he can take her coasting to make her miss her train.
