The Pilgrims creation of the Mayflower Compact helped the average citizen have a role in government because the government and laws the Pilgrims chose to have for themselves in the New World was different from the monarchy and laws they were used to in Europe. In the Mayflower Compact, the Pilgrims state that they are going to combine themselves into a civil, body politic. They also plan to create equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices for the general good of the colony. The government the Pilgrims had allowed men in the colony, and their wives if they were absent during a town meeting, to vote. The colonists were used to having a Monarchy as their government who could create or get rid of laws at any moment.
In the following essay we will be comparing two people's personal accounts of a period in their life. We will be comparing William Bradford, a leader among the pilgrims that arrived on the continent of America on the Mayflower. Aso we will be comparing Cabeza de Vaca who was a Spanish explorer, and got ship wrecked in America and lived among the Native Americans from 1529-1534. In the the letters of Cabeza de Vaca, we will see the journey that de Vaca takes as he is stranded among the Native Americans.
I claim that Columbus Day should remain an American holiday. I believe Columbus Day should remain an American holiday because Columbus laid the foundations for the widespread European migration from Europe to America. Although Columbus was not the first to discover America, he was the first to attempt to colonize America. Columbus’ Voyages led to the widespread exchange of food, goods and animals. Now known as the Columbian Exchange, this is a momentous point in history.
Good Evening Prof. Ellis, I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving Break! I know I enjoyed a nice home cooked meal, however, the reason I am emailing you is to make sure I don 't have my "final grade docked" because I didn 't send in excuses for my absences. I am positive I have missed over three absences, so attached are doctor 's notes for two of the days I missed. I believe that Columbus Day shouldn’t be a holiday. Columbus was horrible to the Native Americans, He took them as slaves, wiped out them with diseases, and just killed them outright with superior weapons like guns. He tried to convert Native Americans into Christians while trying to wipe out the Native American Culture. In Columbus’ journal Columbus wrote “All the inhabitants could be taken away to spain to become slaves.”
Columbus day Columbus day is a day that we think of Christopher Columbus for “finding” america. Yet he really did not find america the native Americans did not Columbus. Columbus day is really just a way to get out of school for a day. Columbus is a man that did a lot of bad things to the native Americans all for just the money. I think that we should not have Columbus day because he really did not do anything for this country except kill a lot of native Americans which was really bad.
“Thanksgiving Myths” Two myths are “The Pilgrims celebrated Thanksgiving every year”, “The Wampanoag brought popcorn to the first Thanksgiving feast”. The truth in these myths are that the Pilgrims did celebrate thanksgiving. That the Pilgrims came to America to for land and for the thanksgiving part. I think people believe this.
Power relations could be anything that sets two things apart, whether that is the ability to accomplish something or act in a specific manner. This is what gives a certain group of individuals the power to interact or control other groups. This concept can be visualized by the relationship pertaining to that of White Settlers and Native Americans during the late 1700s and through to the late 1800s. Cultural influence in regards to the white settlers can bring many gains and opportunities stemming from the political rivalries, the interaction between beliefs, and how individuals viewed one another in general. The culture of the Natives was ultimately altered due to the arrival of these pioneers because of the gradual integration of white values and practices into their society.
Columbus Day has been celebrated in the US for generations, but it is not something America should be proud of. Christopher Columbus carried out a genocide, yet (inexplicably) this information is excluded from textbooks throughout elementary and some of middle school. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because it is glorifying the abuse of indigenous people and mistreatment of those who are different from oneself. Christopher Columbus was born in 1451, claiming to be from Genoa (now Italy). However, there is evidence that he might not have been from there at all.
I feel that Columbus Day shouldn’t be a national holiday. It should not be a holiday because Columbus was an awful person. He murdered hundreds of natives causing genocide, killing off half of the population either by overworking them or making them starve. He also brought harmful germs and diseases to the indigenous people such as smallpox, influenza, typhus, and typhoid. Lastly, he enslaved the Natives so that he could have gold.
First Thanksgiving One myth I chose was The Wampanoag brought popcorn to the first Thanksgiving feast. Wampanoag had eating popcorn but they had eating other things to but popcorn wasn’t the first. They also ate cranberry sauce. Also they ate bread, meat pies, and boiled pumpkins.
Thanksgiving Traditions With Thanksgiving right around the corner, people are daydreaming about all the amazing food they’re going to eat. Mashed potatoes, stuffing, pie and of course turkey! Not only are people thinking about food, they can’t wait to get back to their Thanksgiving traditions. Zach Fisher (9) runs the Turkey Trot 5K in Cedar Rapids every year with his mom and stepdad. He has participated in it since he was little and doesn’t remember a time he lost to his family.
Reflection Présis 2, Columbus and The First Thanksgiving (February 13-15,2018) 108788 Part I: In these two sessions, Dr. Jendian introduced the term heroification and gave the definition from the book Lies My Teacher Told Me. The author of the book mentioned, James W. Loewen (11) explains that, “Through this process, our educational media turn flesh-and-blood individuals into pious, perfect creatures without conflicts, pain, credibility, or human interest.” Dr. Jendian explained that heroification presents history characters as superhuman heroes.
As studied by Janet Siskind, the American Thanksgiving celebration is actually a very detailed ritual that contains many symbols. Similar to other rituals, the holiday reinforces certain social structures and “…reaffirms values and assumptions about cultural and social unity, about identity and history, about inclusion and exclusion” (168). The Thanksgiving ritual is centered around a return home, as people traveled from their urban homes back to their rural home to meet with their larger family. As a result, “the household became the site of ritual performance…” (175). The goal of the Thanksgiving ritual was to reaffirm the family and renew traditional ties, especially as more people had started moving into the cities around the time that the holiday became popular in the United States (176).
One of the greatest weeks of my life was back in 2003, when my family went on vacation to Hawaii. We went because the previous year, my sister, Andrea, and I became certified divers, so this was our reward from our parents, who loved diving. My sister and I were only fourteen at the time. We had always heard that some of the greatest dive sites and clearest water in the world were in Hawaii and were extremely excited to experience it for ourselves.
