Agriculture, corn growing specifically, dramatically influenced the size and sophistication of Native American civilizations in Mexico and South America. By about 1200 B.C., corn cultivation had reached the present-day American Southwest. On its journey, it powerfully molded Pueblo culture. The Pueblo peoples in the Rio Grande valley built complex irrigation systems to water their cornfields. They lived in villages made of multi-storied, terraced buildings when Spanish explorers greeted them in the sixteenth century.
Balance and Power: The Lakota Expansion The outstanding power of the Lakotas against other tribes and the settlers is said to be caused by the numbers and superior organization skills of the Lakota. But that is only half of the reason for the Lakotas’ power. The Lakotas succeeded partly because other tribes failed.
Perdue challenges many myths that surround Cherokee women. As already stated, they held a lot of power over their households. In addition, their power and status was established in their roles as food providers and maintaining their households. These women farmed and hunted to bring food into the home and also gathered wood, cooked, and made items for the household. Even more, they owned the homes they brought foodstuff and materials into.
The Lakota Indians The Lakota is a tribe located in the northern plains of America. They are related to the Sioux by culture, Language, and history. The Dakota are also a related tribe to the Lakota. They are known as Teton or also western Sioux. In the 1640’s the Lakota stayed closer to the Sioux.
The Mohawk Tribe The Mohawk were part of the Iroquois Nation and now lives around Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Their native homeland extended through parts of New York and near the Mohawk River and into what are now the mountains of Vermont. Today, many of the Mohawks live in Canada.
During the French and Britain‘s conflicts, the Iroquois Confederacy consisted of six nations: the Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Tuscarora. Although, I’m sure all of these nations have interesting backgrounds, I’ve decided to find out more about the Cayuga nation. The Cayuga nation has a very interesting culture, which includes the food they eat and the religion they’ve chosen to practice. The main foods involved in the Cayuga diet included corn, beans, and squash, also known as, the Three Sisters.

The Shoshone was a Native American tribe in the western Great Basin in the United States. This tribe was spread into the north and east Idaho and Wyoming. The Shoshone religion was Shoshone rituals. Their population was approximately 8000 members at first, but their population began to increase about 20,000 members. There were three classes in Shoshone tribe, which were the chief and shaman, trading partners, and the servants.
They were around the Florida, Georgia area and the New Mexico area. The Spanish used the natives for their knowledge of the land around them to find gold. They also tried to convert them to Catholicism. The Spanish, like the French, married the native women. In 1506, the Spaniards overthrew the leaders of the tribe and forced the Indians to work.
The Bannock tribe was a huge and important tribe with rich history and culture until the building of Fort Hall when the white settlers came, and that eventually led to their destruction. The history and the traditions of the Bannock tribe, which is where they were located, the food they ate, and the games they played like the relay races, is a huge part of who they are today. The Bannock’s lands were located in what is now known as Idaho, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and into Canada. Another part of the Bannock tribe was its neighbors the Shoshone tribe.
Iroquois Confederacy was an association of five tribes named Mohawk, Oneida, Onandaga, Cayuga, Seneca. The conference was characterized by a peaceful pact between the tribes. In 1700, the Tuscarora tribe joined to the confederacy making the Six Nations Iroquois. Each tribe was compound by two moieties, and each moiety was compound by one or more exogamous clans. The Iroquois Confederacy had a huge importance in America History because they were the immense native American political group that fought with French and England settlement of the America.

The theme is specifically shown in Joy Harjo's book ‘Crazy Brave', Melanie King's article ‘What Should Be Displayed? Native Arts in Museums and on the Runways’, and The Lummi Nation in the video ‘Not For Any Price’. Melanie King also touches on the perseverance of culture in her article “What Should Be Displayed?
Native Americans flourished in North America, but over time white settlers came and started invading their territory. Native Americans were constantly being thrown and pushed off their land. Sorrowfully this continued as the Americans looked for new opportunities and land in the West. When the whites came to the west, it changed the Native American’s lives forever. The Native Americans had to adapt to the whites, which was difficult for them.
The Tequesta Indians were a small, humble and calm tribe. First tribe in South Florida and made Biscayne Bay their home giving them an abundance of plants, ani-mals and materials for the production of tools and crafts materials. Their power and dominance made them second among the small tribes of Florida’s southeast coast. The Tequesta were hunters and gatherers. They gather nuts, berries and plants.
The Hoh Native American tribe has lived amongst the Nature Bridge camp for many centuries and has many interesting topics to study such as the reservation, people, food, clothing, recreation, religion, myths and legends, the age of the tribe, and the important events on the history of the tribe. Because of these, the tribe is rich in history and culture, making it a great essay topic to study for my Nature Bridge trip of 2017. The Hoh generally live in the northwestern part of Washington, and they have an entire reservation where a majority of their population lives. This reservation is on the Pacific coast, on the mouth of the Hoh River.
