In the year 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, alongside 31 other people, set out to find the source of the Mississippi and “discover” the land that they had bought from the French-- Louisiana. This expedition was by the command, and in the name of, President Thomas Jefferson. However, I believe that the Native Americans were the real heroes of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, as they guided the group in two (and probably more) instances, and went on to endure the aftermath of the expedition. While this isn’t evidence of them being the real heroes, as it is honestly just disproving the idea that Lewis and Clark are the heroes, the Corps of Discovery didn’t even do anything that great, and are being constantly romanticized by America,

Lewis and Clark were known for an incredible journey that changed US history. The journey increased the size of the US dramatically. From May 14, 1804, to September 23, 1806, a dangerous but yet history changing exploration occurred. Through many dangerous situations and hardships, the expedition of Lewis and Clark turned out a success.
The expedition was to find and map a water route across North America from Atlantic to Pacific Ocean (Northwest Passage). Establish good relations with Native Americans and announce territory is controlled by government. Plus collect information about plants and land along the route. There was a lot of plants,animals, and landscapes that we encountered in the expedition.
They had about thirty-four people in their exploration when they started but when they ended the exploration they had about twenty-seven people. Lewis and Clark travelled through ten states and went back through all ten states. When the Spanish heard about Lewis and Clark and their exploration they tried to arrest them because the Spanish were worried about Lewis and Clark taking the Spanish’s land. Clark was a devoted family man and a valued friend.

When faced with new frontiers, the American people never shy away from exploring these mysterious territories. The “Corps of Discovery” and “Apollo 11” were two brave teams whose story captured the imaginations of Americans all across the nation and influenced their dreams of discovery. When the United States accepted The Louisiana Purchase of 1803, 827,000 square miles of unexplored land was added to the country.
The Lewis and Clarke Expedition took place in 1804 and lasted two years. Explorers, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, led this expedition in order to gather information on new territory that was yet to be explored. Appointed by James Monroe, Lewis and Clark made their journey through the American interior to the Pacific Northwest. On their way there, they ran into two interpreters that aided them along the way: Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau. Accompanied by these two individuals, Lewis and Clark were able to make a successful trip back to their town and publish the journals that they documented during this trip.

When the expedition started exploring in 1803 they started down the Mississippi river on three ships and didn’t run into any american indians. as they traveled they learned about many new things such as minerals and plants so far unknown to science and eventually sent a care package back to president Jefferson on one of the three ships to show him all the new scientific discoveries that the expedition had made.
Before The Corps of Discovery’s journeys in the west, no country, not even France or Spain who previously owned the land, had any idea what exactly was in the Louisiana Territory. Everyone knew that new land, resources, and people awaited them, but no one was really sure of the certainties. Thanks to The Corps of Discovery, the western frontier was finally mapped and completed documented in every way possible. This would lead to the migration of Americans from the eastern seaboard to the Mid-West, the Rocky Mountains, and the western seaboard. Cities such as San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, and Kansas City slowly started to develop throughout the west.
President Thomas Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery to have the Lewis and Clark expedition find a waterway that could connect the United States for transportation because he had aspirations to expand to the Pacific and Northwest making the expedition important to his agenda for the United States. Another reason for the important expedition was to create a relationship with the American Indians, and the American fur trade, while learning the North American topography and geography of the land which was also important to the exploration (Corps of Discover, 2016). Before Lewis and Clark explored it , the West was virtually untouched by Europeans. It was the home of many Native tribes. , such as the Missouri, and Ohta Nations, the Tieton- Su, and the Nez Perce. It was also home to many unknow plants and animals, such as bison. The Lewis and Clark Expedition, faced many challenges and triumphs that changed the lives of many.

In between California and the rest of the country were the Great Plains which were not heavily populated so there was no easy way of trade and transportation to the growing western territories. A group of men called the “Big Four” which consisted of Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker and Mark Hopkins, decided what the country needed was a transcontinental railroad. Their company, The Central Pacific Railroad company would hire 15,000 Chinese men to work on constructing the railroad due to the fact that they would work for less than the average American. This made transportation cheaper and quicker than ever
