Akwanaeberego was a beautiful woman to behold. She caused men and women to stir and stare whenever she leisurely strolled by. The women craved they could be as beautiful as she is and the men desired, they could tell mama about her. Men could not muster enough courage to approach her; they felt that such a beauty must be engaged to a man. It happened that one morning, as she was passing by, just by the junction, where four footpaths meet. Amuka was there thinking about his farm and the pestilence that has befallen the land. As this thought formed a halo on his head, he bent down to dig out a tuber of yam for the night, somebody cleared his throat behind him, he was startled out of his skin, as he turned round in fright, and it was the villages wag Alikilija, known for his wry crude jokes. ‘I don’t have anything for you now and I am not ready for your jokes, what have you to joke about the rain that has refused to come down? Amuka said feigning seriousness. Alikilija looked at him steadily, with the long stare; he exploded in a metallic laughter and then stopped abruptly. Then he said ‘the birds have whispered to me that you want to marry Akwanaeberego’ and you never told me, you really have to look deeply, make sure your hand touches the depth of the pond’.Amuka started paying attention, this is not the usual village wag who is always drunk. ‘What are suggesting’, he asked him with a pretended smile, but he just turned and walked away. Then he dashed out of the thicket and growled in a deep voice with his eyes askance ‘ The way the bitter sounds in the mouth is not how it tastes’ and dashed back into the bush and disappeared again trailing a peal of long laughter after him.
