World War 1 started in 1914 and went through 4 years and ended in the year 1918. The war started out with an assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Austria then declared war on Serbia and Serbia had Russia as its allies. Russia threatened Austria then Austria told Germany the problem and Germany declared war on Russia and its ally which was France. Germany went into Belgium and then Britain entered the war on the Russian side.
The Treaty of Versailles The Treaty of Versailles was a treaty that Great Britain, France, the United States, and Germany signed in hopes to end all war. However, the Treaty of Versailles did the opposite and caused WWII by angering Germany and making them pay war reparations. The treaty angered many germans by depriving them of their land. This is shown in Map of Germany in document A, Germany lost parts of Southern Germany, the Polish Corridor, East Prussia, and Northern parts near Denmark. This act prompted Germany to take their land back in means of war.

During the end of World War I, Germany was forced to sign the Treaty of Versailles as punishment for Germany and her allies being the aggressors of the war. Reparations, the War Guilt Clause, territorial loss, and restricted military were all factors as to how the Treaty of Versailles helped trigger World War II. Many factors played into the start of World War I like nationalism, the arms race, the lack of balance of power, Sebians assassinating the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, and alliances, but there is one big cause you can argue that started the war. Tension between and within countries caused leaders of the countries and groups to spark rebellions of the groups, and one thing after another a World War was on their hands. Germany's tensions between France and Russia started alliances. Serbia had sparked the first rebellion by trying to gain independence from the mother country Austria. Europe was thought to be in a strong position, but at the end of 1918 the position was reduced.

A document known as the “Treaty of Versailles” explained the actions and reparations Germany had to take in order to pay for the war damage and casualties. A higher power known as Hitler rose to power after recognizing the harmful effects of the treaty and fueling the hope and pride of Germans. The Treaty of Versailles contributed to the beginning of WWII because Germany lost a lot of land and resources, Germany’s army was diminished to almost none, and Germany finally recognized the extent of the harsh treatment in the treaty. With the introduction of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was forced to give up a lot of its land and territory.

The people’s nationalistic feelings fueled the war because they did not want their country’s image ruined. In Europe, the nations had an uneven division of colonies which caused a desire to weaken other countries through a world war.

Serbia and Austria-Hungary both had different allies that joined the war shortly after. France, Russia, Britain and Canada joined Serbia in the war, and Germany joined Austria-Hungary. All the actions that took place in each front all led to the armistice being signed on the eleventh of November. The conditions set for a major shift in power caused by Italian and German unification. This unification brought many new leaders of great power such as Victor Emmanuel II and Otto Von Bismarck. With newfound land, power, and wealth, Bismarck felt invincible and began to seek war and form alliances.

In April of 1917 the United States officially enter World War 1, after the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives voted to join the war. The United States joined the Allied Powers group consisting of the Great Britain, France, and Russia. While the Central Powers consisted of Germany, Austrian-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria.

All countries had some participation and damage done throughout World War 1, and the countries who started the war may be obscure. However, there are some countries that can especially be picked out for their contribution and cause for the war.

WW1 is known as the first modern war because it saw the incorporation of mechanical weapons. The Central Powers and Allies both used a variety of weapons such as machine guns, chemical weapons , clothing, biplanes, artillery, tanks, grenades, and rifles. These weapons were state of the art for the early 20th century. These weapons caused casualties to skyrocket as the Allies and the Central Powers were in a stalemate.
