1. BAR SCREEN (= filtration)
The start of the purification process, the bar screen’s function is to filter out the large waste in the sewage water, such as plastic bottles, cans, all the solid objects. This prevents any clogging when the water continues on to the next machine. The way it works is that it has vertical metal bars that are very closely placed so the solids cannot pass through; leaving only the water that still has dirt and smaller waste in it. There are two classified bar screens, one is manually done and the other is mechanically done. The manual bar screen is all done by hand; it is an old system used a long time ago. While the mechanical bar screen is operated mechanically to clean it out. The mechanical bar screen is used …show more content…

In order to remove, it lets the impurities settle to the bottom of the tank to remove it from the water. The type of grit usually removed are types of waste that easily passed through the bar screen however is heavy enough to be removed in this process. It is quite similar to sedimentation tanks however it has a different function that is especially important to the whole water purification system.

3. SETTLING TANK (= sedimentation)
In this step, the solid is separated from the liquid. The sludge and chemical impurities are placed in a large tank where sedimentation takes place to separate the sludge from the water. It's done by a having the water almost completely still and then a rake on the bottom of the tank slowly goes round to pick up the settled solid parts. This step only gets rid of the sludge which is then collected and taken out from an outlet on the floor of the tank.

4. AERATION TANK (= …show more content…

Oxygen is spewed into the tank in order to purify and get rid of the dissolved bacteria in the water. The bacteria would biodegrade because of the oxygen going into the water. The oxygen removes organic compounds from the water, such as hydrogen sulfide. The oxygen also increases the speed at which the water is cleaned. After this it can all be filtered out of the water. There are two types of aeration tanks, one where you force the air through the liquid and one where you force liquid through
