The Odyssey is an epic told by Homer. The Odyssey takes the reader through an adventure with the protagonist, Odysseus, in his journey to get home to his wife. Odysseus faces challenges with the Greek gods as he journeys home. A good leader is defined as someone whom successfully leads a group to an agreed goal. Odysseus was not successful in directing his men to success, instead he lead his men to death. Due to his endangerment of his men and distraction from their objective, Odysseus was a terrible leader. Odysseus often allowed his pride to put his and his men’s lives in danger. As they were escaping the blinded Cyclops, Odysseus yells to the Cyclops that he will remain victorious and tells the Cyclops he was unintelligent. Odysseus’ continuous boasting could have potentially killed his men, but his arrogance and bad leadership caused him to continue. He ignores his team’s safety, which made their path to success change in a negative way. A good leader never allows his pride to take away from his group’s objective and progress. When Odysseus was sailing past the sirens, he risked being lured to them instead of plugging his ears. Odysseus was warned that the sirens singing was unavoidable if it was heard. The Odyssey, a Greek epic involves the story of Odysseus's daring adventures during his return to Ithaca. He fell into numerous difficulties and has to keep himself alive. In the Odyssey Homer changes the Crew in order to reveal his message that strong minded leaders can help the weak minded to his ancient Greek audience and the reader. Strong minded leader help the weak minded develops from when they got tied up by Odysseus, to when the Cyclops ate one of their men in the Cyclops then to where Helios made them sacrificed one of their cattle for him, even though the crew does get distracted sometimes during the journey.
Odysseus leads his men to victory. Being the good leader that he is, he puts aside his personal desires and unselfishly gives himself to warfare for his country. Odysseus also lead his men through many obstacles. He is fearless in the face of the cyclops, he never gave up in trying to keep his men alive and safe. Even though he loses some men, he was still determined to get the remainder men to safety.
However, examples within the literary narrative of the Odyssey leaves the discussion open with regards to his leadership. Thus, the question of leadership supersedes the topic of Arete. Was Odysseus the ideal leader or did he portray undesirable leadership tendencies? The examples that will presented will illustrate that Odysseus hubris, risk taking prowess, and at times unwillingness to follow instructions often placed his crew in danger as he journeyed Ithaca.

One theme that Odysseus learned is that people in the real world also learn is that in order to succeed and move forward, you must have courage. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus shows courage during his battles and hard times. This courage enables him to work toward his goal of getting back home to his wife. For example, just before stabbing the Cyclops in the eye with his spear, Odysseus “cheered [his] men on with battle talk to keep their courage up: no quitting now” (906). Odysseus learned that, in order to escape from the Cyclops and get back home, he would have to be brave; therefore, he showed this to his men as well.

When Odysseus commands his men to go back to sea to voyage, he is a good leader because he is telling his men what to do. He is being a leader by protecting his men from the Ciccone 's army by leaving before reinforcements come. For example, when Odysseus and his men are heading to the sirens Odysseus states “you are to tie me up, tight as a splint” (Homer 1005). Odysseus is an admirable leader when he orders his men to tie him up and do not untie him because he is sacrificing himself for the good of his men. Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, however, what gives someone the title of a good or bad is decided by the decisions they make and how those decisions affect others. In the book called The Odyssey by Homer, it mainly follows the story of a king of a village called Ithaca, hundreds of years ago-This man, is named Odysseus.
