The Odyssey is an epic told by Homer. The Odyssey takes the reader through an adventure with the protagonist, Odysseus, in his journey to get home to his wife. Odysseus faces challenges with the Greek gods as he journeys home. A good leader is defined as someone whom successfully leads a group to an agreed goal. Odysseus was not successful in directing his men to success, instead he lead his men to death. Due to his endangerment of his men and distraction from their objective, Odysseus was a terrible leader. Odysseus often allowed his pride to put his and his men’s lives in danger. As they were escaping the blinded Cyclops, Odysseus yells to the Cyclops that he will remain victorious and tells the Cyclops he was unintelligent. Odysseus’ continuous boasting could have potentially killed his men, but his arrogance and bad leadership caused him to continue. He ignores his team’s safety, which made their path to success change in a negative way. A good leader never allows his pride to take away from his group’s objective and progress. When Odysseus was sailing past the sirens, he risked being lured to them instead of plugging his ears. Odysseus was warned that the sirens singing was unavoidable if it was heard. He was told to plug his ears while Sailing past the sirens. Odysseus decided to tie himself to his ship and listen to the siren sounds instead. In Odysseus deciding to be risky, he jeopardized his and his men’s safety. Odysseus could have just plugged his years but instead he chose to listen anyway. A good leader stays away from danger, keeping his team on the straightest path to success. Throughout his journey, Odysseus lead his team to many distractions.
