Tom Sawyer in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Intelligence is often a quality that is associated with leadership, but in most cases if a person carries themselves with confidence, then people will follow them. These individuals captivate a whole room and inspire people to do magnificent things or horrendous things. People follow a leader that inspires them and itelligence is not a quality that always inspires. In Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, leader Tom Sawyer is used to criticize society when it chooses leaders not for their level of intelligence but for qualities such as charisma. As a result people have to deal with the repercussions of these leaders.
In the first few chapters, it is made clear that Tom Sawyer has a romantic way of thinking, where as Huck Finn is the opposite because he thinks with rationally. The two have contrasting ideas on how to lead but when a group of boys decides to start a gang, Tom is the one that the boys pick to lead them. ¨insert quote about leader choosing¨. Although most leaders are not chosen for their level of intelligence, some unlike Tom truly do want to help, but the selfishness of others over shadows any good intentions. Tom never meant to hurt anyone when he was conducting his plans to free Jim, but he ended up hurting everyone around him, including himself. He felt so sorry about all of the things that he put Jim through, that he gave Jim forty dollars. The mess that Tom left behind was so big that he himself had to clean it up. With leadership comes the responsibility to govern others, but it is people's jobs to chose them
