Many people know that natural disasters are dangerous, but they don’t realize the full impact that the disasters can cause. In fact, between 2003 and 2013 the total damages caused by disasters totaled more than $1.5 trillion dollars. (Luxton) The total death toll from 2003- 2013 globally is more than 1.1 million people. (Luxton) Natural disasters make a negative impact by destroying property, causing death, and can lead to financial ruin. Natural disasters occur globally and result in the death of many people, the destruction of the environment, and a tremendous expense around the world. Although earthquakes can occur anywhere in the world there are areas that are more prone to earthquakes. These areas are along the Pacific coastal areas …show more content…
Tornadoes are measured by how much damage they cause. In the United States we use the EF scale but over in different parts of the world they use another scale, the F scale which is similar. The severity of a tornado is scored on a scale of F1-F5 with F5 being the worse having higher wind speeds and causes more damage (Insurance Information Institute). An F1 has winds from 73-112 miles per hour and an F5 can have winds from 261-318 miles per hour (North Carolina Weather and Climate) Radar is used to predict a tornado so that a warning can be issued for the potential affected areas. Tornadoes are a “column of air that extends from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground” (Schneider) Tornadoes can happen anywhere in the world but are often seen in the United States. Central United States is known as the “tornado alley” (National Severe Storm Laboratories). They have occurred in Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America, Argentina and Bangladesh. The US has about 1,200 per year. (Severe Weather 101) During a tornado a person will notice high winds, hale, rain, and flying debris related to the winds. Tornadoes are often funnel shaped, fast moving, and can shift directions at a moment’s notice. In 2011 a tornado hit Alabama and caused around $7.8 billion dollars’ worth of damage (Insurance Information Institute). This tornado holds the record for the most expensive. …show more content…
Wildfires are a natural disaster that many people do not consider. The cost of battling wildfires has increased to around “1 billion dollars per year.” (Moseley) One of the most famous wildfires was in 1910. This fire involved Idaho, Montana, and Washington, burning more than three million acres with eighty five people killed. (Forestry History Society) This fire taught many lessons about how to fight, and survive a wildfire. Wildfires can be started by accident or by lightening. Accidental starts are often caused by people with cigarettes or campfires. Dry conditions, fallen debris, and wind can all be fuel to a wildfire. The forest service even has controlled burns to get rid of debris as a method of preventing wildfires. The rainforest in South America has also been a target for wildfires. Actually wildfires are the “biggest threat to the Amazon ecosystem” (Lindsey). Many acres of the nutrient rich land has been destroyed. In fact, many areas look like they have “deforested” (Lindsey). Some of the land was able to be turned into farm land after it was burned. Prevention is the best way to stop wildfires. Making sure campfires are completely extinguished and proper disposal of cigarettes are important factors in prevention. Also being aware of warnings and watches that are issued. When a warning is issued there should be no controlled burning of any size. Fire can quickly spread and engulf acres
The Mapleton Iowa started off with heavy hail and really strong winds. The Mapleton Iowa caused damage and destruction. The Mapleton Iowa tornado “WIND DAMAGE IS CAUSED BY WINDS ESTIMATED AT 136 TO 165 MPH.” “Injured 14 people were injured” and “75% of the town destroyed”. About 600 plus homes were destroyed.
Tornados are one of the most weather phenomenons that we have. The Joplin tornado was one of the worst tornados that were recorded. This was also the deadliest tornado that has ever happened in the United States. These natural disasters were from Oklahoma all the way to North Carolina. There was over a 150 tornados that spawned from these natural disasters.
Fire was thought to be bad, and wildfires were immediately suppressed. Wildfires are an important part of the ecosystem. Fire has shaped forests and grasslands for thousands of years, and many plants and animals depend on it. As human interference continued, forest health declined (Fire Ecology in Colorado). Forests here may become overgrown when fire isn’t allowed to move through.
Forest fires are uncontrolled fires in nature. They happen all over the world. Forest fires may be beneficial to many organisms in the environment. Forest fires burn the smaller, weaker, and low growing plants. This allows the other plants to grow healthier, without smaller ones using up their resources.
Again you have to do your research. You cannot take the previous owner's word for anything. You have to do your due diligence. Are tornadoes common? A tornado can happen anywhere there are thunderstorms, but how prevalent in the area are they is the question.
Wildland fires have played an important role in North American history. Theyhave helped shape our public and private lands. Wildfires have causedthousands of deaths, destroyed millions of acres of timber and evenseveral towns in their path. However, wildland fire is not solely adestructive force. It is necessary for the growth of some plantspecies, and is part of an ecological cycle.
In this article the author illustrates the disadvantages of wildfires destroying not only the wildlife but the wildland. It is explained throughout the article the pros and cons and the short and long term deprivations to the wildlife. McCombie lists many different points to back up his topic and gives many sources to verify his facts. By using classical appeals the article “Hot Spots” by Brian McCombie effectively argues that wildfires can benefit and also harm wildlife.
While wildfires do have some positive effects, you can not look towards them when lives are lost. You can not control where a wildfire will lead to and it takes a long time to put one out. In a discussion, someone brought up how your insurance does not cover property that is burned down. I believe this is very absurd considering the fact that you were not responsible for it. Even some planned fire can go out of hand leading to major destruction and injuries.
In 2015 in the middle of summer there was a conflagration. The conflagration was in a small town of M.T Vernon,Oregon and it burned for days and days. Firefighters tell me that it started because of the conflagration in California it started from the small embers that traveled and landed in a pile of hay,and spread to the dry grass. Sources tell me that it was the biggest conflagration yet. Many homes and crops destroyed.
In 2011, Joplin had a deadly tornado hit down on May 22. It was a regular Sunday afternoon when things started to get bad. It started to get really dark outside, winds at 200 mph, and clouds started to rotate, that's when the tornados started to hit. The joplin tornado wasn't just one big tornado there were 3 small tornados, that come together to make an EF5 tornado. The EF5 tornado hit stores, schools, works, and homes.
In conclusion, prescribed fires help out a lot. they can make our everyday life better if we use them more for the good of all living things. If we didn't use them, we might not be able to enjoy such a future. We might have many more wildfires than we ever expected in the future if we don't use prescribed fires.
The Joplin Tornado was a very extreme F-5 tornado that killed and injured many people. To begin, the articles "The Evil Swirling Darkness" and the article "A Storm Chaser 's First-Hand Account of the Joplin Tornado" both give very different accounts of what happened the day of the tornado. One example of a difference between the two articles is how the second article talks a lot about how after the tornado had finished, there were no emergency responders that came to help the people who had experienced the tornado. The second article talks about this towards it 's end. Another difference between the two articles is that the storm chaser article talks about pulling people out from the rubble after the tornado took place.
California has one of the most severe wildland fire problems in the world. Population, vegetation, topography, and climate all play key roles in the probability of a wildfire occurring. In other words, it’s not a matter of “if” a wildfire will occur, but it’s a matter of “when.” In California, more and more people are choosing to live in communities near wildlands. These wildlands are composed of highly flammable vegetation which can be explosive.
Also there is a couple of ways to measure tornadoes. The EF scale is the standard and most common way to measure tornadoes based on wind damage. The original Fujita scale was developed by Dr Theodore Fujita. All tornadoes were assigned a number according to the most intense damage this tornado has caused. The enhanced F scale started being used in the United States on February 1, 2007.
Aside from deforestation, wildfires affect habitat of the environment population and distribution of species after incident is not the same. It poses risks to human life and health due to heavy smog released in the atmosphere that can cause respiratory diseases. Damages the
