Oedipus the King by Sophocles is a story that depicts a man who tries his hardest to be good. He was abandoned by his parents at a very young age. Eventually, he found his way back to his mother but killed his father along the way. He marries his mother and saves the city of Thebes, but all without realizing the atrocities he committed during the process. However, by fate and the will of the gods, he faces the horrors he committed while trying to behave virtuously.
In Sophocles play Oedipus the King, the King Laius and his wife Jocasta, who ruled at that time had a child and was foretold by an oracle “that the child born by his queen Jocasta would slay his father and wed his mother” (ancient-mythology.com). The child that was born had a birth defect leaving his legs bound together, so the King and Queen wanted to prevent this prophecy from happening so they left the baby to die on Mount Corinth. The infant boy was found by shepherds and adopted by the King of Corinth who named him Oedipus (ancient-mythology.com). Many years later Oedipus ventured to Thebes and on his way there he encountered a man and killed him.

Oedipus as a king has hubris or excessive pride and sees himself as having superiority over all others. “I thought it wrong, my children, to hear the truth from others, messengers. Here I am myself—you all know me, the world knows my fame: I am Oedipus” (Lines 1-6). This sets up the view that exactly from the beginning of the story, Oedipus is worshipped as this highly renowned king. This sets up the dramatic irony that even though Oedipus is praised, the people reciting the story are the ones who along with Oedipus will discover the truth about his life.
Oedipus defeated the Sphinx and gained a city, so of course he thought very highly of himself. But, little did he know that his pride and anger would end up dooming him, forcing him to realize that he did not escape his fate. With having pride you believe in yourself a little too much, thinking that you can do anything. You began to think of yourself as a GOD, rather than someone who is able to perform a task better than the next. You will never have a clear vision of what is really in front of you.

Although he was ashamed of the life he had been living, he realized that the mistakes were his own, and no one can bear the weight but him. He even said it himself “No one but me can bear this weight.” The grave consequences which Oedipus suffered in the end consisted of the loss of his mother/ wife by suicide, as well as his grief becoming a threat to himself, as he stabbed his own eyes out, blinding him permanently. After suffering dreadful pain from these actions in grief, Oedipus went on to face the other consequences given by the gods and Creon. He cursed himself many times in the book saying that whoever killed Laius should be banished or killed, and he would even go on to be cursed by his wrongful actions of incest.
Oedipus was much the same as Medea strangely, he excessively needed, making it impossible to change his destiny of what he was let it know would be and he too will stop at no cause. Oedipus was informed his prediction regarding him wedding his mother, executing his dad and getting to be visually impaired. Nauseated with this benefit he attempted to overlook it, yet started to end up inquisitive and wouldn't stop by any methods important to discover reality. He wound up slaughtering a man who was tried to be in his direction and wedded a lady who he has children with. When he declared his prediction to his significant other, she beseeched him to not look any further into it.
Oedipus’s selfishness and temper eventually lead to his downfall. Oedipus selfishness made everyone else mad at him for him not believing them. He kept digging and digging himself into a deeper hole. This eventually made his punishment at the end worse for him. He also could not handle the truth so this made him disrespect the gods.

He was determined king who thinks very highly of himself. He is a good physician, calculator and ruler. Every decision he made was in the best interest of the city.

Oedipus grow up without realizing he is adopted until one day he is out with some friends drinking, one of his friend that night told him the truth. Finding out this. He travel to Delphi 's to search for the truth. But once he get their he told about a prophecy where he kills his father and marry his mother.
