Throughout the 1930s, countries who were upset over the outcome of World War I started to take aggression toward the other countries who had oppressed them through the Treaty Of Versailles. When Germany was defeated they became embarrassed and wanted to prove their superiority to other countries. However, Germany was in severe debt from World War I. As they struggled through financial ruin, many citizens were frustrated with the situation they faced and were extremely unhappy. This allowed the Nazi party and Hitler to rise to political power in Germany. Hitler was determined to restore glory to Germany and enact revenge on the countries that embarrassed them.
The Holocaust occurred when Hitler came to power, caused by his power of words; as Death states: “The Fuhrer decided that he would rule the world with words.” (Zusak 445). Hitler manipulated the Germans to think that other people, such as Jews, are not the ideal human race and they need to abolish them. The Germans were oblivious to what Hitler was trying to accomplish because they were blinded by his wise and knowledgeable choice of words.
In history, events of genocide have occurred and humankind has fought to stop them. Such horrific events have occurred across the world; possibly the most horrific event of them all was the Holocaust. Hitler led a dictatorship throughout the entire country of Germany and during this time he had devised a strategy to take over Europe. While ruling his Nazi state and having a world war, Hitler had been running concentration camps secretly throughout his controlled territories. With the promises of honor and prosperity, Germany unknowingly granted Adolf Hitler the power to implement his plans into fruition. As such he began his tyrannical rule over Germany resulting in a mass genocide known as the Holocaust. During this time period, Hitler and his Nazi party attempted to eradicate the Jewish population within Europe and spread their anti-Semitic policies throughout the world. At the end of World War II, only a certain amounts of people were able to survive the Holocaust. However, the survivors are still haunted by the events that occurred to them.
Germans wanted their German children to also hate the Jewish people. Additionally, Document #5, written by Daniel Goldhagen in 1996, said that Germans had the ideology that all Jewish people had to be killed. Ordinary Germans were responsible for the Holocaust because they supported anti-semitism and didn’t say no to Hitler. No one tried resisting from the Nazis; they all supported actions against Jewish people. However, in document #7, by Yad Vashem, an organization that honors those killed in the Holocaust, said that many Germans saved Jewish lives by hiding them in their homes, faking identities, taking in children and helping Jewish people escape.
During the 1930’s to the mid 1940’s, Europe had to deal with the mass murder of millions of Jews and World War II which was one of the most deadly wars in history. During World War II, the Nazis planned to kill off the entire Jewish Population in Europe. World War II happened during the Great Depression. It was a difficult time for the economy and the lives of many people in Europe. The war distracted people from The Holocaust because of the battles that went on, the invasions, and America’s immigration policies with Germany.
Due to the feeling of vulnerability the Germans felt, they let Hitler brainwash the majority of them leading to the discrimination of Jews. Hitler blamed the Jews for their loss of the World War 1. I think the author's purpose for writing this book is to not discriminate against people and what race or religion they are, to inform people who read the book about what happened during the holocaust and to show that some people were uninformed about what was actually going on during that time. In the book, Bruno, the main character, moves to a house right outside of the camp and meets a boy named Shmuel. Shmuel is on the other side of the fence, and Bruno does not understand that Shmuel is trapped and is being treated terribly. He also doesn’t see Shmuel as different, like most people did during the years of the holocaust, and I think that’s one way the author tried to tell us that not everyone was informed about what was actually going on,
The Holocaust was one of the most devastating times for all of the world. It strained the world’s economy and resources; death tolls were tremendously high and injuries were severe. The Holocaust is a time in history when millions of people were persecuted in Europe by being sent to live in ghettos and eventually being deported to concentration camps where they were systematically annihilated until the Allied forces liberated the remaining survivors.
