William B. Hartsfield

William B. Hartsfield was a prominent American politician and aviation pioneer who served as the mayor of Atlanta, Georgia, for a total of 20 years. Born on December 10, 1890, in Atlanta, Georgia, Hartsfield was the son of William Berry Hartsfield and Mary Caroline Hartsfield. He grew up in Atlanta and attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree in civil engineering.

Throughout his career, Hartsfield was a dedicated public servant and a visionary leader who made significant contributions to the development of the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia. During his tenure as mayor, Hartsfield worked tirelessly to bring air service to Atlanta and establish the airport as a major transportation hub. Through his efforts, the airport grew from a small regional airport to one of the busiest airports in the world, serving millions of passengers each year.

Another notable achievement of Hartsfield was his role in the Civil Rights Movement. Despite facing opposition from some segments of the community, Hartsfield supported equal rights for all citizens and worked to improve race relations in Atlanta. He was instrumental in the desegregation of public facilities in the city, including parks, swimming pools, and schools.
