The nurses were clear. No visitors. They refused to let us see Johnny who was in critical condition. We wouldn’t take no for an answer. It was our buddy in there and we would do anything to see him. Our pleading seemed hopeless until the doctor heard what was going on.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” He questioned Two-Bit and I. Only I noticed his tone in words. I didn’t like it. But still we both nodded our heads. We entered the hospital room to see Johnny was as pale as a ghost.
“Hey, Johnnykid,” Two-Bit burst through the dead silence. “How y’all feeling?”
His big black eyes widened at hearing his friend’s voice. “Won’t…” – Johnny wheezed – “Won’t let me out to see the gang”
“Don’t talk,” Two-bit told Johnny, pulling up a seat, “Listen, we will visit you anytime you want. The rumble is going on tonight.”

Johnny smiled. As we left the hospital, I couldn’t help thinking whether he will be ok. The doctor said he will go through a surgery tonight. I hope he gets through it. The silence in the blank was unsettling. What would I do if something happened to Johnny? Putting that thought aside, we returned to his room. After we gave the nurse the book, we began walking to Dally’s room. I hope he isn’t as bad as Johnny. When we arrived where Dallas was staying, all we could hear were arguments about smoking between him and the nurse. Two-Bit and I left – we could tell he was fine.
