The nurses were clear. No visitors. They refused to let us see Johnny who was in critical condition. We wouldn’t take no for an answer. It was our buddy in there and we would do anything to see him. Our pleading seemed hopeless until the doctor heard what was going on.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” He questioned Two-Bit and I. Only I noticed his tone in words. I didn’t like it. But still we both nodded our heads. We entered the hospital room to see Johnny was as pale as a ghost.
“Hey, Johnnykid,” Two-Bit burst through the dead silence. “How y’all feeling?”
His big black eyes widened at hearing his friend’s voice. “Won’t…” – Johnny wheezed – “Won’t let me out to see the gang”
“Don’t talk,” Two-bit told Johnny, pulling up a seat, “Listen, we will visit you anytime you want. The rumble is going on tonight.”
He didn’t say anything. He didn’t have to. I could tell he thought it was a bad idea.

Johnny smiled. As we left the hospital, I couldn’t help thinking whether he will be ok. The doctor said he will go through a surgery tonight. I hope he gets through it. The silence in the blank was unsettling. What would I do if something happened to Johnny? Putting that thought aside, we returned to his room. After we gave the nurse the book, we began walking to Dally’s room. I hope he isn’t as bad as Johnny. When we arrived where Dallas was staying, all we could hear were arguments about smoking between him and the nurse. Two-Bit and I left – we could tell he was fine. Whilst passing the vacant lot, I noticed something. It was Cherry sitting in a red
As Ponyboy is with Johnny, Johnny stabs a Soc to try and save Ponyboy from getting drowned. This shows true friendship considering we know that Johnny would never and is against killing in any way. As they escape Ponyboy relies on his gang members to help him get to safety away from cops. Later, Johnny and dally gets hurt from a burning church and has to go to the hospital. A couple days later, Johnny dies, but tells Ponyboy "Stay gold Ponyboy".
Soon after they arrived, five intoxicated Socs showed up to start some trouble. The Socs told them to stay away, then all chaos broke loose: “‘You really killed him, huh, Johnny?’... ‘I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you.
Ponyboy “ said that he was late for supper” “Darry had cooked dinner: baked chicken and potatoes and corn,” Ponyboy said that he loves chicken, then Ponyboy said, “Then we hurried to take a shower and change clothes. Me and Soda and Darry always got spruced up before a rumble. And besides, we wanted to show those socks we weren’t trash, that we were just as good as they were. Then Johnny talks about why everyone fights. Darry fight for pride, Soda fight for fun, Steve fight for hatred, Two-Bit for conformity.
Over the course of the next few days, Johnny is weak and in bad condition. He cannot feel anything below his lower back. A couple days later, they have the rumble, the fight between the greasers and another group, the Socs. They win in honor of Johnny but a few days later, Johnny dies. This affects Dally emotionally because Johnny was the only person he really loved.
After Johnny told him to back off the girls were talking about Dally but then Johnny and Ponyboy stuck up for him. “‘Dally’s okay,’ Johnny said defensively, and I nodded. You take up for your buddies, no matter what they do. When you’re a gang, you stick up for the members.
Everyone was sad after Johnny’s death, but mostly Ponyboy and Dally. Later that day we had to go to a rumble, which it would be greasers against some Socs. We won, but some of us got hurt, especially dally. Dally couldn’t stop thinking about Johnny’s death, it hurt him a lot because he loved him as a brother. Dally didn’t wanna live any longer because the only thing he really loved was Johnny and that was gone already so he said “it wasn’t worth to live any longer”.
One day Ponyboy and Johnny get into trouble and are forced out of town and Ponyboy’s brother worries
In other words, fight. They decided to have this rumble for many reasons. One reason would be to figure out what places the other gang can't go, and just because the gangs were tired of each other. They wanted to solve all their problems. The greasers decided to dedicate this rumble to Jonny.
" Valence claimed to have sent the boys home angrily. “Marcia and I were enjoying our night when a friend of Ponyboy’s began chatting us up in a very rude manner. Ponyboy and Johnny stuck up for us. They were very chivalrous,
I walk out, and nobody says anything. I stay away all night, and nobody notices. ””(51) Although Johnny knows his parents don’t care, he still asks Dally if they asked about him when he and Ponyboy ran
They go out to eat and when they come back they see the church burning and hear that some kids are trapped inside. They burst inside to save the kids even though Dally told them not to. Johnny then broke his back after a piece of the wood fell on him and he went to the hospital he was in critical condition. For the first time greasers were seen as hero's even though the paper read " JUVENILE DELINQUENTS TURN HEROES" ( Hinton page 90 ) While Johnny and Pony were in the church a big fight had been scheduled between the socs and the greasers and if the greasers won socs can't jump them again after the rumble Pony Goes to the hospital to see Johnny and to tell them that they won, but he tells Pony that it is useless and that Pony had to "stay gold" and that meant to preserve one's innocence because Johnny had felt how losing one's innocence can change a person. He then dies, Dally bursts out of the hospital.
In self defense and trying to stop the Socs from drowning Ponyboy, Johnny pulled out his switchblade and killed Bob. The boys quickly decided to get out of town in an effort to avoid the “fuzz.” The boys say they hid away in the abandoned church for about five days when their friend and member of their gang, Dally Winston, came to help them. As they decided to turn themselves in, and walked past the church which had been their hiding place, they saw it was set afire. Johnny, acting quickly, ran into the church with Ponyboy following.
He asks for a copy of “Gone With the Wind”, which Pony makes Dally go get for him. Soon, they had to leave, and Johnny’s mother was there to see him. Though, Johnny was reluctant about seeing her. Then, Two-bit and Pony went to see Dally who is doing better, and he even asks Two-bit for his switchblade because he plans on escaping the hospital in order to attend the rumble. Pony isn’t feeling well, and begs Two-bit not to say anything so that he can still go to the rumble.
This shows how he gained back his self-confidence and his ability to stand up for himself. Johnny finally found his acceptance from Dally when Dally said, “We’re all so proud of you” (148). When Dally said that Ponyboy noticed Johnny’s eyes glowing, “Dally was proud of him... That was all he ever wanted” (148). In the letter he wrote to Ponyboy, “It’s worth saving those kids...
The rumble was coming soon, and the rumble was when the greasers fight the socs. Ponyboy was very excited because he did very well in the rumble, even though he got a slight concussion and is acting weird now. Right after the rumble, they went to the hospital to visit Johnny, only to witness his death. As Dally witnessed this, he went to rob a grocery store, causing the police to chase him. He finally raises his gun with no ammo and the police shot him.
