Although “street smarts” has developed a poor reputation which pushes people to neglect the positive aspects of this particular way of learning. In the article, “Hidden Intellectualism”, Gerald Graff evaluates the structure schools use to teach literature. He explains that intellect is not only found in the academic form of thinking.
Dana Giola believes literature is a crucial part of life, especially for young adults. In her passage “Why Literature Matters” she describes that young Americans' interests have diminished for literature. She persuades her audience using ethos, logos, and cause-and-effect reasoning. Giola starts off her passage by describing the interest young Americans showed in arts which “actually diminished”(Giola 1) because of how they “taught reading comprehension”(Giola 2).
In the passage the author Dana Gioia argues and states that the literacy rate here in the United States is dropping very fast. The author claims that “the interest young Americans showed in the arts and especially literature actually diminished. Gioia is stating that many young Americans throughout the United States are not reading and that is making the literacy rate to decrease. Making our literature status go down. Gioia gives us examples of this by stating some facts and looking back at a survey.

Using logos and pathos, he justifies his claim on how the waning interest in literature is affecting America’s society in many negative ways. The poll was taken on their members about the skill deficiencies among their workers.

As a humanist, the author, Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini, would obviously stress the importance of reading because he would want his other books about humanism to be read. As time went on, even more books specified an importance in reading. However, there was a very crucial change, now more and more books were in the vernacular. I feel this article was very well written and has included some interesting, yet excellent, facts on reading in the workplace and the effects it could have on the wellbeing of its employees. I feel that the main purpose of this article was to show different companies how incorporating reading in the workplace could be to their advantage. Within the article the author describes different types of effects it can have on their employee’s wellbeing and how this could be very successful in the workplace.
Literature is a work of art that frees and liberates it’s reader. It allows one to gain knowledge so that they might be able to continually grow as a person. As a child, I could not go a day without reading. Due to those years of reading, I believe literature taught me how to write from my heart and truly be able to express myself. Reading literature creates an equal opportunity for everyone to enhance their lives by immersing themselves in the thoughts and wisdom of others.
