Should Books Banned Books?

Students are often deprived of education by the school itself. “How?” you might ask. With book banning, of course. Book banning is the act of removing books from a school or a library because of “controversial” content. Book banning is wrong for three reasons. First, students cannot be kept in a protective bubble forever. Secondly, important life lessons are taught through books. Finally, classic literature, which is full of valuable information, is most often banned.

“Books usually are challenged with the best intentions-- to protect others, frequently children, from difficult ideas and information” (Scales 163). A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, restricting the access of others. Due to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents, students and other concerned citizens, most challenges are unsuccessful and most materials are retained in the school curriculum or library collection. Often challenges are motivated by a desire to protect children from “inappropriate” sexual content or “offensive” language. For example, sexually explicit, material that contains offensive language, and often times material that is unsuited to any age group.

There are multiple reasons why parents are banning books. First, this text states, “Children should not be exposed to sex, violence, drug use, or other inappropriate topics” (Procon.org). To explain, parents are banning books from schools because they do not want their children to be exposed to these inappropriate topics. Moreover, banning these inappropriate topic books would be a great deal for parents and their children. Books are an essential way to gain knowledge whether they are controversial or not. Thousands of books have been banned from public libraries and schools due to being deemed ‘inappropriate’ by parents, administrators, or religious leaders. Whether Americans should ban books in public libraries and schools is an often debated topic. This censorship of books is dangerous, as it restricts the American people's’ ability to access information, leaving Americans ignorant.

Every child deserves a proper education. Banned books are depriving students of a well rounded, culturally aware, literary education because of the culture that is discarded, the history that is being withheld, and the education that young people could get through these banned books. The point of history is to learn from it and learn from others mistakes, but how can we do that if we are not allowed to learn it. These are the two different sides and how they could solve their differences to make both sides happier, a compromise. The first two paragraphs were all about how banned books are bad, how they are all horrific and not something you would like to read. However, in the third paragraph, we find that is not the truth that banned books can be good for people to read as well. Now think about how many books are being prosecuted needlessly, how many of the bad ones are being forced into teens hands. Do we let the classics live or die because of the offensive language? Students can use books to grow their knowledge about our everyday day life. “It is important to help students see that everyone 's view counts” (Scales). By allowing students to see different points of views they’re able to experience situations unfamiliar to them and learn about different cultures and societies. If they don’t have the opportunity to read these books then they might miss out on these vital lessons. Children need to know about sensitive topics and strong ideas. If kids are not exposed to this material than they might not truly understand big pieces of history. If books were banned we would have less options to read and our education wouldn 't be as strong.

Books can create portals to different life experiences and encourage reading. A few schools and libraries have challenged the educational value of some books, however, therefore leading them to eventually be prohibited in a particular place. Each reason may be different depending on the book and the location of the exclusions. Books are icons of literature and their value should outshine the occasionally offensive topic. Be that as it may, there are multiple reasons why books should be taught and included in a curriculum. If you really want a book not to be read by an adolescent, banning the book will often have an opposite effect. Although it contains sensitive topics and harsh language, The Secret Life of Bees should not be banned in high schools because students are not only mature enough to handle these issues but should, in fact, be exposed to them in an educational environment to help in the development of their maturing minds.

Banned Books are books that are prohibited by law or to which free access is not permitted by other means. Banning books is against the writers right for freedom of speech, which is the first amendment. Students have the right to read, reading is not illegal, so why ban books? If a reader is mature enough to handle some curse words or bad behavior then they should be able to read banned books. Some people believe books should not be banned in schools/libraries but just because you do not like it does not mean it should be taken away, that is the authors freedom of speech. Also, some say that you should not be exposing bad behavior or language to students but in reality they hear and see these things everyday, and by banning a book, that is not protecting them.

For it be for accepting yourself or people to show you the real world. Either way those are all to teach us something. When you ban and censor books inside those books are the fears you hold and that you don’t want to see. It is because of that reason why today there are so many social problems in our world. Not banning books wouldn’t solve all the social problems in the world but it would take us into the right direction. Keep people from the truth of banned books is the same as lying to them. Not letting your children and even just normal people read something because you don’t see it correct does it make it correct for them not to read that book. At one point in time, over 7,220 books have been challenged to be banned. Though these books have been removed for the safety of children, not all books should be banned for many reasons. These include the fact that banning books is infringing on the First Amendment, keeping children from understanding the real world, and, even though there are many reasons for book banning, not banning books could help a student’s education and can even work against itself.
