Individualism is when an individual is different than everyone else in their actions, thoughts, and opinions. The government can punish those who act differently than how the rest of the populace acts. They can give the person a trial or secretly deal with the problem. This involves the disappearing aspect of a dystopian society. Clarisse is a character in Fahrenheit 451 and she is different than everyone else.
In a collective society all members must act collectively or together. This includes thinking, working or living therefor by taking love and education they are forced to work collectively with the same people they see day to day. By taking away individualism, differences between two are also being taken, therefore everyone is looked at the same. A collective society might mean people must act collectively, but thinking collectively is almost impossible with every individual being

Alexis De Tocqueville was a French aristocrat was a well-educated, political thinker, and historian, who came to America to study the prisons and jails. He arrived in America with longtime friend Gustave de Beaumont, in May of 1831 and stayed about 9 months. Upon his return home he published his travels and experiences in America, in his book Democracy in America. He believed in Democracy and he envisioned France as a Democracy.
“I have tried to see not differently but further…”(Tocqueville, 1835) was Alexis de Tocqueville’s conclusion to the introduction of his perennial classic text Democracy in America, and adumbrates to the reader of his modern ideas and observations that were to follow. At the same time, he measures the progress of society through its relationship with equality and liberty. In this paper, I will highlight Tocqueville’s use of equality and liberty to compare the past and the modern, and establish his views on the effects of these concepts with society and each other. Finally, I will put forth that Tocqueville does not favour one concept over the other, but notes the complex relationship between the two and the importance of the co-existence of liberty and equality for a society of people. To begin, let us build the base case to compare with and look the past as defined by Tocqueville, with emphasis on equality and liberty.
An historian that blamed the weakness of social and political structure of the Ancien Regime was Alexis de Tocqueville. Tocqueville was born into an old aristocratic Parisian family. He was the great-grandson of the statesman Malesherbes, who was guillotined in 1794. His parents narrowly escaped the guillotine due to the fall of Robespierre in 1794. This went on shape his view of the middle class; he saw the rise of the bourgeoisie as a crucial factor in challenging the traditional order and driving the revolutionary change.

CONTEXT Alexis de Tocqueville’s 1856 book The Old Regime and the (French) Revolution is an attempt to understand what has been considered the inciting incident of the nineteenth century, the French Revolution, with a more critical eye, after decades of reflection and influence. The criticism of the French Revolution that Tocqueville makes in The Old Regime and the Revolution are easily read as a product of his experiences in nineteenth century France.
The first part of Tocqueville’s definition of exceptionalism is liberty. Liberty is defined as “The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority,” and liberty has always been a defining factor of American values. Liberty has constantly been present in America but with the start of the new millennium liberty was threatened like never before. September 11th started the decade of unrest and challenge of freedom, President George W. Bush said to congress after the terrorism act that “freedom itself is under attack” and under attack it was. To protect the citizens of the United States, the congress issued the Patriot Act on October 26th, 2001 (Duignan).
The values that are the most important to individualism are rule of law, and self interest. Though I am still growing in my values and beliefs as a male citizen in Canada I believe that rule of law is the most important to individualism because everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. Way back a long time ago people were ranked based on who their parents were. A good example of that would be the feudal system or the term we would call feudalism. The feudal system is a ranking system that has the King/Queen on the top and the peasants at the bottom.
Individualism is when a person has achieved non-conformity, self-reliance, free-thought, confidence, and finding one’s self through nature. Although individualism may be achieved in society, it cannot be fully achieved until one removes himself from society. Chris McCandless did exactly that; he removed himself from society by backpacking and hitchhiking throughout the United States to test and achieve individualism. McCandless’s last great adventure was to Alaska to fully obtain individualism, unfortunately, he died trying to find his spiritual belonging and individualism. Many people would think it was absurd that Chris left his family and threw his life away, and they would think that he was not justified in leaving society, however, Chris McCandless was justified in leaving society because by doing so he could achieve non-conformity and self-reliance without being oppressed.
How could losing individuality affect a society? The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand is about a guy named Equality 7-2521 who is trying to find himself in a society where everything is controlled and different. Later, he finds himself even though he will have to go through many obstacles to get there. The process behind losing individuality in an Anthem’s society are in forcing strict laws, brain washing of their citizens, and removing of family. The Anthem society in forcing of strict laws made it easy for everyone to lose their individuality.
Individualism allows for a person to hold onto their given rights and for a society to move forward. Collectivism supporters may say that collectivism allows for the exchange of new ideas within a group, but this is invalid because an individual comes up with an idea and then spreads it into a group. If a government becomes a collectivist regime, people would be restricted from doing many things they love because a groups’ interest is held above an individual’s interest. A society would be dragged back in time instead of being motivated to progress. An individualistic society would have most rights given to every person and they would have more freedom

Firstly, conformity creates a safe atmosphere and a safer environment for the citizens to live in. Conformity eliminates all the negative and positive differences in each other. Yes, individualism does urge people to pursue personal achievements, which creates competition between individualism with a desire to besiege each other that can unfold a war within the civilisation, an onset of development of dangerous, harming and deadly weapons that lead to illness, mental and physical disorders in addition to deep dejection in the society. To prevent this from originating, we can abolish all the distinctions between each other and as Jonas said “we can gain control of many things.” which can be achieved together as a community.
De Tocqueville doesn 't view liberty as an attribute part of the democratic era. He believes that the only character that is associated with this era is equality. He explains in his theory that people of this era prize equality over liberty, although he doesn 't deny that democratic people value liberty, because everyone can take part in it and enjoy it effortlessly, as opposed to liberty where you have to "sacrifice" to achieve it (De Tocqueville, 1835). He holds that equality creates individualism, which means people separate themselves from one another, their ancestors and the future generations, that leads to tyranny and despotism. On the contrary, he claims that during the aristocratic ages, people were not selfish and careless about others ' needs because "aristocracy links everybody, from peasant to king" (De Tocqueville, 1835).
