Ergogenic aids are anything that enhances work, recovery, or provides an advantage to an athlete (Ahrendt, 2001). Whether it be equipment or supplements, if it benefits the athlete’s performance it is considered an ergogenic aid. About 50% of people use some sort of supplement to improve their strength, endurance, and overall performance in sport (Ahrendt, 2001). Some supplements are allowed on a competitive level, but others are not. Anabolic-androgenic steroids are considered an ergogenic aid, and are not allowed in sports (Kersey et al., 2012).
What are Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids?
Steroids are like hormones. Hormones are naturally occurring in the human body, and are synthesized by endocrine glands. Steroid hormones are made primarily

Many people utilize these synthetic steroids to promote tissue growth within the body, primarily in the muscle tissue. They are thought to limit the breakdown of muscle, and reduce inflammation of all body tissues. Anabolic-androgenic steroids may also stimulate human growth hormone. Because of this, they can be utilized to treat certain medical conditions, however they can be abused as well. Some athletes utilize these steroids as an ergogenic aid to improve strength, power and performance in sport (Kersey, et al., 2012). There are only first-hand personal accounts of their beneficial effects, rather than clinical research studies, so it is hard to determine their true benefits (Kutscher, …show more content…
Including inhibiting bone development in adolescents. This can be due to a premature closure of the epiphyseal plate in the long bones of the user (Kersey et al. 2012). Furthermore, recent research has shown that chronic steroid use can be harmful to kidney function. Anabolic-androgenic steroids can cause a condition called proteinuria, in which abnormally high levels of protein are excreted in the urine. Proteinuria is directly related to a decrease in kidney function (Schieszer, 2010). In addition to these side effects, anabolic-androgenic steroids may hindering the immune system, putting abusers at risk for infections. Injection of anabolic-androgen steroids also put people at risk of contracting hepatitis and HIV (Kersey et al.,
Home LGD 4033 (Ligandrol) is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that is a much safer alternative for building muscle mass without all of the dangerous side effects. It works so effectively that some people are able to gain as much as 1-2 pounds of muscle in a week when they increase the amount of protein that they eat and continue their regular workouts while taking it. Though Ligandrol is considered to be one of the strongest muscle builders on the market, supplements containing Ostarine have gained popularity as well. Ostarine results are fantastic because there are no known harmful side effects. However, SARM reviews discussing the other type of muscle builder have shown that some Ligandrol side effects can be dangerous, especially the damage that it can cause to the liver.
The negative side effects of steroids are often not shown. Steroids can harm a full grown adult’s body, and the effects are only amplified in teenagers. Anabolic steroids can have long-lasing and sometimes irreversible effects on the body. They have been linked to high cholesterol, blood clots, strokes, and musculoskeletal problems. Since steroids are a hormone like testosterone, the effects can cause a sort of hyper-masculinity in young men.
Insulin, a drug used to save the lives of people who suffer from diabetes, has recently been used by many athletes to increase muscle growth. The problem is that these protein can have a severe side effect if taken incorrectly or in wrong amounts. It can cause serious health complications, and even deaths. Drug testing and the strict punishments that can come along with it need to be enforced much more than they are today. The fines and suspensions we have seen as of late are a stepping stone to rid athletics of the performance enhancing substances.
Anabolic steroids are a group of powerful drugs or compounds that duplicate the function of the male sex hormone Testosterone. They are used medically to treat certain kinds of anemia, severe burns, endocrine problems, and some types of breast cancer. Research has shown that they increase lean muscle mass, strength, and increase the ability to train harder and longer. Anabolic steroids can be administered in the body orally, injected into the vein with a needle in cycles of weeks or months, or they can be inhaled. Anabolic steroids can be addictive the the body, and if used improperly, can cause many negative side effects.
Even though the Germans introduced anabolic steroids to the world, the Soviets truly pioneered the use of steroids in professional sports. This section of the research will display the usage of anabolic steroids in the Olympics, Major League Baseball, and professional
Steroids are commonly associated with a negative connotation when it comes to athletes and body builders. Yet few are informed about the benefits steroids provide. There are two types of steroids: Cortisone and Anabolic steroids. Cortisone steroids are used to treat medical conditions whereas anabolic steroids are used to replicate human sex hormones. Steroids benefit those with hormone imbalances, respiratory disorders and increase athletic ability.
Steroids should only be used for medical reasons and not for better performance. I cannot seem to understand why athletes would take any kind of drug without medical advice or take any drug with so many hazardous side effects. There are reasons why people do what they do, but after researching performance enhancing drugs, I would not think of any reason to use such a drug with so many ill side effects. In my opinion, if you do not have the natural ability and have to rely on a performance-enhancing type of drug, you should not be playing. Drug testing would be the best idea, but it is still not 100% on results quite yet.
As the game continues to evolve with the equipment, the game will as evolve with steroid usage. The desire to be the best player and hit home runs have ruined the concept of playing small ball. Androstenedione and anabolic steroids are both designed to increase muscle mass in the body, which relates to an increase in power. With the prevalence of suspensions that are handed out because of the use of steroids, players should give up steroids and use hard work to get to where they desire to be. With the increase in knowledge in the medical field about steroids, it may be possible to create a way to detect steroids during test.
We see them as a negative thing but some of us need them for our daily lives. There are many different types of steroids that contain different types of active hormones. The first thing i found research on was steroid Colombian Electronic Encyclopedia and it told me the different types of steroids and the use for them. The research tells me that their are many different types of steroids and different uses and side effects of them.
PEDs can cause aggression and other mood changes as well as more serious disorders like depression 4. PEDs are unhealthy for the body and the mind. Steroids and other PEDs don’t increase dopamine in the brain like other drugs; dopamine produces the “high” feeling. But they can become addictive and people that use them will continue to do so despite physical problems and negative effects on social relationships 5.
Over three million Americans abuse anabolic steroids and 10 percent of them are teenagers. Human Growth Hormones: This type of drug is supposed to gain muscle mass and performance while
“Anabolic steroids are used to build up muscle. Corticosteroids are used to dampen overactive immune responses and reduce swelling” (DeNoon, Daniel). The anabolic steroids that are used by athletes are synthetic versions of testosterone, which is a male hormone. When taking these steroids your testosterone will increase and when you get your testosterone out of balance there is a wide range of problems that can be experienced.
Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED’s) are drugs which are used to alter or enhance ones athletic performance or physical capabilities. Some examples of PED’s are Anabolic Steroids and Human Growth Hormones. These drugs are currently illegal in almost all professional sports. Although a lack of substantial testing as resulted in the fact that they are still in wide consumption. The major issues with PED’s are there health effects and whether or not they are “fair” and give some athletes a greater advantage.
(Exploring Topics In). Anabolic Steroids are synthetic hormones (Drug Use In). Steroids or PED’s are chemically manufactured and they can be taken orally or injected.
Treatment may not be able to change it back, notice changes in their genital area, grow more body hair, lose the hair on the head, stop getting periods or get them much less often than they used to. All people who use anabolic steroids might start to get: Severe acne, a higher risk of swollen or torn cords in the body called tendons, which attach muscle to bone, Liver tumors, or other changes to the liver, higher levels of the "bad" cholesterol, called low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, lower levels of the "good" cholesterol, called high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, high blood pressure, problems with the heart and blood flow, issues with anger or violence, Mental health conditions, such as depression”(1). As you can see the amount of affects that PED’s can have the body is astonishing. You may be wondering, why would anyone put their body through that? Well a main reason is that they simply just like the way their muscles look while on the drugs.
