Competition only makes children bound to be winners. It also discourages sportsman spirit. Instead of being a source of healthy growth, these competitive sports have started becoming the source of depression for children when they don’t fulfil the expectations of their parents. These sports should enhance the sportsman spirit in children and must be beneficial for their mental and physical health. Concentrating on winning or losing spoils the fun that games hold.
Value of Sports and Visual Arts In today's society, high school sports are highly valued. With sports comes recognition, good health, and so much more. Although sports provide many positives for growing teens, they are too glorified. Too much funding and support from schools and communities go into the sports program, and while many programs out of school allow kids to take part in sports, rarely are there any that involve acting, music, and art. The art programs, specifically music, teach creativity and have the benefit of helping with math and science skills.
School sports have begun to be too competitive which has caused kids to play more and to play more aggressive. Some may say only a couple of sports are dangerous, like football or basketball, but sports like running and tennis don’t put the athlete at a huge risk for injury. However, in any sport there’s danger of being injured. Any kid who plays any sport often has a big risk for an injury. Over the past years, kids have began to play sports more often and for a longer amount of time, which has caused the amount of overuse injuries to sky rocket.
Youth sports have been a very popular recreation in America. It allows kids to have the chance to play a sport at a young age. However, large numbers of the young athletes only play a single sport, and the types of adults that are spectators or coaches of youth sports are mainly split into two opposing sides. One half helps the kids succeed in the sport they are playing and let the kid choose if they want to play that sport, and the other half force the child to play a sport that they may not like and gravitate towards the child’s every mistake like a moth to a flame. This can cause a multitude problems for the child and can often be overwhelming.
Sports scholarships can help students who can't afford to go to college, get a better education. Sports scholarships are for students who excel in a sport, and a college will give the student money to play their sport at their college. This is amazing for students but there are various downsides. Sometimes the scholarship can be a hindrance for the student causing them not to reach their academic potential. Sports scholarships are also rare and can be a false hope for families not able to afford college.
With the right coach, athletes can focus on building character and setting goals, such as winning, while still being able to enjoy playing sports without consistent pressure. During an Institute for the Study of Youth Sports analysis, studies showed that, “outstanding high school coaches who were recognized for the character and citizenship building contributions to players we found that these individuals were highly successful (winning over 70% of their games)” (Gould). While students centered on playing hard and showing sportsmanship, they were able to win a majority of their games, instead of just focusing on winning. Thus, students can grow in character when playing high school sports. To emphasize this, youth athletes develop goal-oriented mindsets during the season.
For athletes across the world, a trophy, medal, or plaque that is awarded to them for excelling in sports is a landmark achievement to say the least. Most athletes who are presented with an award, generally cherish and appreciate their accomplishment, but if all athletes are awarded with a trophy or medal for only coming to practice, then the value of athletic awards diminish. Giving out awards to young athletes for only coming to practice and participating in athletic events, can present some negative consequences in the future. For instance, if an athlete receives a participation trophy at the end of every season, then the athlete will begin to develop the mindset that he or she is entitled to an award, regardless if the athlete truly deserves the award or not. This type of behavior can send a negative message to younger generations of athletes who are beginning their athletic
Others may say that it is the quickest and most effective way to discipline children. Although the majority of parents approve of physical punishment as a disciplinary strategy, this practice can be detrimental to the mental health of their children. Physical punishment is a controversial topic. Although the use of physical punishment is commonly used in the
Thus, I totally agree that these standards are to be removed from children sports. It should be more about fun. I think that the author has seen this matter quite practically as she says that the competition can be a part of the adult life and must be taught to the children but sports should not be the medium to do it. The competition among children make it stressful for them and it’s almost impossible to enjoy the sports. Competitive sport can cause the children to be under constant pressure and this can result in mentally upsetting them.
Gym class is always a class kids remember. Either they wish they had more of it or they wish they didn’t have to do it. Maybe they are bigger and cannot do everything the other kids do, they are scared of getting hurt, or they just want to play games with their friends. These cannot always be avoided, but a few things are certain. More gym can help drop obesity rates in kids, reduces stress, and improve academics.
