INTRODUCTION TO THE AUTHOR Pinki Virani , one of the eminent Indian writer, journalist, author and human-rights activist was born on 30th January 1959. She has won great critical praise for her four best-selling books :- Aruna 's Story (published in January 1998) ; Once was Bombay ( published in January,1999) (also known as a "cult book"); Bitter Chocolate: Child Sexual Abuse in India (published in April 2000) and Deaf Heaven ( published in December 2009). She is a writer who writes to bring change in society. She has written 4 books and each one of them is related to the problems of society. This is where we get to know the real Aruna. We come to know about her personality, her ambitions, her dreams & infact her faults. Where on one hand, she warns the sweeper , on the other hand she herself was not 'obeying ' her superiors when she disregards their order not to use the dog laboratory to change her uniform since it was appropriately close and quite unsafe , unlike the regular nurses ' room. With the unreal dialogues between the senior and young nurses, Virani tries to tell a warning tale to the working women who might face some personal dangers due to their behavior, which would be considered as ' 'Harsh” in the male world. The third and the final part talks about the present day situation of the decay of the medical profession, hospital management & society. This book also looks in several other issues from rape, such as the safety of working women to class-n-caste conflict & euthanasia where Virani wonders if Aruna was better off dead than to be in this continuous non-living state. Aruna 's Story is simple yet fascinating and provoking. It makes an interesting read, especially where it is sprinkled with lively tales showing Aruna 's relation with her colleagues & her lover. It is obvious that Virani has put her heart-n-soul in this book & if she could she would surely put
