Bomb: The Race to Build - And Steal - The World’s Most Dangerous Weapon was published on September 4, 2012. It was written by American author Steve Sheinkin. The book is not a story about the Atomic Bomb, but it is the story of the Atomic Bomb. Steve Sheinkin retells the story of the Atomic Bomb and important events involved with the bomb so it is easy to understand for the reader, rather than creating a story around it. He uses real interviews and testimonies from first hand witnesses, as well as primary sources of information, including FBI and government documents.
In New York Times article “First Atomic Bomb Dropped on Japan,” written by Sidney Shalett announces America dropped the first made atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan. This news has brought the world to chaos by the weapon that the United States invented to bring destruction to another country. This weapon of the United States called an atomic bomb, has wiped out everything in Hiroshima to nothing. The author of this article, Shalett, captures the effective of the bomb as “an immense steel tower has been “vaporized” by the tremendous explosion.” When the author uses the word “vaporized” to describe the power that atomic bomb hold, this word tell atomic bomb can make think to disperse by the time it went explode.

This act caused President Truman to spend more money on the army and defense of the United States and panic and hysteria spread to the minds of the people of our country. “...and the world lived under the threat of thermonuclear war for the first time.” (History.com Staff, "Soviets explode atomic bomb").

During World War II, the United States discovered that the energy of the atom could be used in a new form of bomb. However, the Germans also discovered this, meaning that it would be a race to actually complete the weapon. The U.S. knew it needed to act fast and so three facilities were created for the development of the weapon in Washington, New Mexico, and Tennessee. The plants in Tennessee were based in almost the middle of nowhere.
On December 7th, 1941, the United states was attacked by the Japanese in the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. The day after this devastating event, the Unites States congress and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, declared war against Japan. As Germany and Italy had allied with Japan, they also declared war on America. Two years later, the United States found themselves joining World War II. America had soon launched a way to get back at Japan for invasion of Pearl Harbor.
All three stories in the packet were very similar in their topics. In all of the stories, multiple groups debate about the atomic bomb. It is evident that in all of the stories, everyone is determined to keep the president from dropping the atomic bomb. In the “Robert Oppenheimer Speech,” Robert Oppenheimer talks about how scientists are anxious waiting for the president’s decision regarding the dropping the atomic bomb.
The Manhattan Project was constructed during World War II by the United States to develop the first nuclear weapon/atomic bomb (The Manhattan Project” 2015).
Not too long after the beginning of the project, a breakthrough occurred in the winter of 1942 (Rhodes). The physicists led by Fermi produced the world’s first controlled Nuclear Chain Reaction at the Stagg Field in the University of Chicago ("The Manhattan Project."). Encouraged by the results and progress, the U.S. government funded the project and endless progress resulted (Rhodes). Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical Physicist, was given the task of designing the bomb in Los Alamos Laboratory in New Mexico ("The Manhattan Project"). Responsible for the aforementioned designing and further research, Oppenheimer is accredited as the “father of the atomic bomb” (Rhodes).
As all the world has known, the biggest atomic bomb in warfare history by the end of World War 2 is the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima that hit on August 9th, 1945 by the direct order of our 33rd president of The United States Of America; Harry S. Truman. He thought this bomb would bring a close ending of the war (World War 2) and it definitely did but it was too much to handle afterwards when it hit. There was no choice for Truman because there was no other way to bring the war into a close. It was the last call, but they didn’t realize that after they released the bomb, it was hard to decide whether it was a mistake or the right decision. The bomb killed innocent people of 199,000 (plus more).
President Harry Truman gave an executive order in 1945 to drop to atomic bombs in popular downtown cities in Japan. With the guidance of many scientists and political leaders President Truman made the extremely tough decision to drop the bombs. After listening to arguments from both sides President Truman came to the conclusion that dropping bombs would be the best thing to do for this war. It would also show that the United States had an extreme military power. Many American politicians were for the idea of dropping the bomb, because they believed that it was the only way to end the war and get Japan to surrender.
Joseph Rotblat, 1995 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, stated, “I have to bring to your notice a terrifying reality: with the development of nuclear weapons Man has acquired, for the first time in history, the technical means to destroy the whole of civilization in a single act” (“Joseph”). Nearly fifty years before Rotblat’s warning, the world witnessed devastation when the United States dropped the first atomic bombs on Japan during World War II. Over 200,000 people perished. On the first day of November in 1952, president Harry S. Truman tested the very first H-bomb on a remote island located in the Pacific Ocean. Common people were not supposed to know, but the information about the detonation were released more than 14 days later. After the atomic bombs were dropped in Japan, our government did not continue the idea of the creation of the hydrogen bomb until the Soviet Union was able to successfully explode their atomic bomb in 1949. This was just one of the important events during the battle in World War II. The Battle at Pearl Harbor, where the Japanese attacked U.S. soil was also why the americans bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Some believe that the United States was correct in dropping these bombs on Japan because of the attack on Pearl Harbor while others believe that it was very wrong to dropped the bomb.
