In class we watched the movie “The Boy with the Striped Pajamas”. The movie focused on two younger boys, who both had behaviors that were related to the three domains of development, which are biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial. There were behaviors were related to the biosocial domain and one being child abuse. Child abuse is “deliberate action that is harmful to a child’s physical, emotional or sexual well-being” (Berger, 2014, pg.236). In the movie Bruno was walking through the woods and came across what he considered was a farm with the fence around it. Bruno walks toward the fence and there was Shmuel siting on the ground with a white and light blue stripped long sleeve shirt and pant that has a lot dirt marks on them, a number on …show more content…
Then there were behaviors connected to reaction time, reaction time is “the time it takes to respond to a stimulus, either physically (with reflexive movement such as eye blink) or cognitively (with a thought)” (Berger, 2014, pg.319). In the movie, Bruno has his satchel and goes to the kitchen where there are treats on the table, Bruno puts some in his satchel, Maria comes in and asks Bruno what he is doing. While the two were having their conversation his mom walks in and asks him “what are you doing with your satchel”, he tells her “Herr Litz gave us some books and I was going to go read”. His mom then asked to see them and Bruno says no, she then says “I just want to see what books he have given you”. Bruno looks down, and says “I told a lie” and tell his mom he has adventure books. Another time would be when Bruno is walking through the house and sees Shmuel, Bruno asks Shmuel ‘what are you doing here” and Shmuel replies “they wanted someone with tiny fingers to clean all …show more content…
After a few days go by without seeing Shmuel after the incident, Bruno finally sees Shmuel and Shmuel is sitting with his head down and lifts it up and it reveals that Shmuel has a bruise on the side of his eye. Bruno then says “I don’t understand, I saw a film about the camp and they looked so nice, sits down and then says Gretel and everyone were saying these things and the soldier was so scary, I been coming here for days but you were never here, I thought maybe we weren’t friends any more, Shmuel I’m very sorry for what I did, were still friends aren’t we?”. This behavior showed that Bruno understood what he did was wrong and him lying and his action caused this to happen to Shmuel so he apologized. Another would be family function; family function is “the way a family works to meet the needs of its members” (Berger, 2014, pg.374). The mother didn’t want Bruno and Gretel to live in the house anymore due to everything that was going on. Bruno’s dad is setting down at his desk and has the children sitting in to chairs in front of the desk, Bruno’s
The storm gets worse and the river they’re by is overflowing. In the distance they can hear people yelling Bruno! Bruno where are you! Shmuel wonders what are they are gonna eat and what he is going to wear? Bruno then wants to know what they are doing next.
Bruno didn’t understand why he was in there. Shmuel was the boy and it killed Bruno that he couldn’t be by him. He just wanted to be by him. Bruno was very crushed until he found his way under the fence.
After the death of Pavel, they hired a new worker named Schmuel, Bruno’s Jew friend at the camp. When Schmuel was cleaning the glasses, Bruno sees him and gives him food to eat. Then, Kotler catches Schmuel chewing and started accusing him of stealing but, Schmuel said Bruno offered it to him. However, Bruno denied it and Kotler believed him and he said that they will have “little
Despite of their different circumstances, Bruno and Shmuel forge a meaningful friendship. As their friendship develops, it is tested on many occasions as the boys navigate their individual
Why? What have you done?” , and Shmuel replies with, “I'm a Jew.” During this scene, it seems as if Bruno is starting to see what is really going on. It separated the world from the other and made Shmuel, along with the others,
Shmuel’s wants to work with animals in a zoo; we can infer that he and the other prisoners are currently being treated like animals. Shmuel knows who Bruno’s father is, and sees him as a frightening and hateful figure but doesn’t want to start a fight with Bruno, so doesn’t mention what his Father nor Lieutenant Kotler pledge. Shmuel still does little to correct Bruno’s perceptions of reality. Bruno is truly an innocent little boy.
In both stories the protagonist have and feel as if they have little to no power in the direction of which their life is heading. Shmuel the Jewish boy that Bruno befriends in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas does not really talk about or try to explain to Bruno what is really happening to him or even to try and ask Bruno why his people are doing this to his people. Bruno and Shmuel do
When Bruno moves to his new home he sees this wall with people within it. He got curious and started adventuring toward it. When he got there he met a new friend named Shmuel. They would always talk together and always wished they could play together somehow. In the book it says,” ‘ I could crawl under,’ said Bruno, reaching down and lifting the wire off the ground.
He had grown a weird kind of relationship with Bruno and they had started to talk about the camp. Bruno really didn’t know what was going on and neither did Shmuel. This had caused Bruno to want to go into the camp and look with Shmuel. Towards the end of the movie Bruno had found out that he is moving soon. Which made him want to go into the camp even sooner.
Bruno has always shown this carefree type of attitude, but it all changes when Shmuel starts getting yelled at. The entire time before Lieutenant Kotler walks in, Bruno talks about random things that have nothing to do with the situation that is occurring. For example, Shmuel was watching Bruno eat and was afraid that he was going to get in trouble, meanwhile, Bruno had no idea, saying, "Can you believe he’s never even read Treasure Island? ” (Boyne) like this is a normal occurrence in his life. But his whole attitude changes when Kotler walks into the kitchen and finds that Shmuel has been eating.
Moreover, he decided to explore in that direction despite what he saw and experienced just from his window. In the second piece of evidence, Bruno is showing his view to Gretel, his sister. “‘Look over there,’ said Bruno… and saw a group of children being shouted at by a group of soldiers” (Boyne, 37). This shows the theme ‘All life’s decisions come with consequences’ because, like the previous example, Bruno decided to show others the scene and invoke fear into them.
This is a confusing, powerful story set during World War II where wealthy ignorant boy meets an “out-with” Jew. the film stays true to the book through the plot where Bruno dies, And deviates through the mother 's character and the resolution. Since Bruno died of the same reason in both the film version and the book, it shows how the film stayed true to the book. Bruno had left to go to the Concentration Camp with Shmuel thinking they would just go find Shmuel’s father and Say Goodbye.
When Schumel could not find his father Bruno dig a hole to go join his friend from the other side of the fence , risking getting caught by his father or soldier but he did not know , considering being a courageous move
This was the beginning of their friendship created during tough times of the Holocaust. The races of Jews and Germans were separated after World War I and Jews were put into concentration camps run by the Nazis. This quote shows that Bruno did not want to disagree with his friend Shmuel even though they did not share the same ideas. Both boys knew the differences they had, but they put them aside and became friends. In
