A hero is somebody who inflicts a positive change, either for their community or towards the world. Heroes require certain qualities that will cause them to be their very best. These qualities include extreme willpower, motivation, giving your best effort, durability, and independence. Although many people think it’s hard to be a hero, there have been many ordinary men and women throughout history that have influenced the society we live in today.

In addition, every true hero is always caring towards others. Spider Man is another perfect example of this action. Spider Man came to a point in his life when he felt like he had no desire to be “the hero” anymore. When he started having these thoughts, his incredible gifts began to dissipate. However, that didn’t stop him from saving people. A majority of people would say a hero is a person who runs into burning buildings and saves people, that is exactly what Peter Parker did. He saw an opportunity to help people when he noticed a building was on fire, and without his powers, he dashed inside. In the end, he saved a young child and escaped the tragedy with no lacerations or injuries. No matter what, a hero will always save and protect other people whether he/she wants to or not. That is what a hero does, he/she will care for others as if they were their own family. For true heroes, they can’t just have an imperfect day and decide to not help people. Heroes in our society are revered and respected as Joseph Campbell reminds us: “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Hero’s are everywhere in this world sometimes they're around you other times they are far away, but everyone has a different hero. When we see a hero most people look up to that person because they know that they have done something good for someone. A hero’s place in society can be all over the world due to their different senses, but most of them will know when something bad is going to happen or when they know that you will need their help to fight mankind. A hero is someone that you look up too because you know that they do the right thing.

President Abraham Lincoln once said, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power” (Abraham Lincoln). In other words, Lincoln is saying that to truly see who a person is, you have to give him power to see their true character. Anyone can pretend to be a certain way, but once they have power they show who they really are. When Lincoln was given power his true character of being a heroic man came out. Lincoln is a hero because during his presidency he freed the slaves, united the country and wrote many inspiring speeches.

The epic poem written by Homer, The Odyssey, is about Odysseus who is a well soldier and commander in the Trojan War. The war lasted for ten years. Odysseus is ready to go home to his wife, Penelope and son, Telemachus, but many obstacles come his way. Odysseus exemplifies being a hero through the acts of leadership, being strategic, and being intelligent on his journey home to Ithaca.

There is a hero in almost every story. A hero doesn’t always necessarily involve physical strength, it can be defined many other ways. A hero is someone who is idealized for their noble qualities, courage and outstanding achievements. In Mary Shelley’s book, Frankenstein, the hero in the story is Victor Frankenstein. Victor sacrifices his family, his life, and other peoples lives for his pursuit of creating life, and attempting to cure diseases. Although Victor fits a few traits of being a hero, he is more of a tragic hero with a fatal flaw. Therefore, Victor’s quest for creating life leads to his downfall.

Heroism is sometimes an essential part of humanity, though those who possess it are rare. How can we have heros if every individual is capable of exceptional leadership and skill? The story The Odyssey, written by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald, is a tale of wandering for a character named Odysseus. Throughout his journey he begins to understand the meaning of sacrifice, learn the characteristics of wisdom, and truly discover what it means to be relentlessly determined. He often comes face to face with the wrath of Greek Gods, but always discovers a way in which he can return home as well as protect his beloved crewmates. It is very hard to describe a hero but a simple description of a true hero is a person that is being true to himself, does things that has to be done no matter what the circumstances are, never afraid to do what is right, and gives the best sincerely. In my point of view, true heroes exist in our world, and they are needed to protect us from the society we are living in and ourselves.

Benjamin Disraeli once said: “To believe in the heroic makes heroes”. Any individual can turn into a hero by saving someone in danger, giving up his or her life so someone else could live. But heroes do not at all times show bravery, they can be heroes even if they are afraid as long as they do a heroic act.
