In the words of Christopher Reeves, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. Heroes are not born, it is someone they become. It is not determined by how they look, but by what what they do, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Heroes are willing to help others by acting quickly, often times just being ordinary people rising above their situation to do extraordinary things, without the expectation of fame and glory. Heroes are always willing to help and act quickly. September 11, 2001 was the terrorist attack on the world trade center. Nearly 3000 people were killed and there would have been more casualties if it wasn’t for the heroic efforts of many people, one in particular being Welles Crowther. One of the women Welles saved, Judy Rein, says while choking back tears, “Without him I wouldn’t be here, he saved my life”. One example of this would be Mulan. Mulan dressed as a boy and went to serve in the Chinese army even though it was illegal. She put herself in danger to help her injured father, even though she knew there was serious consequences if she were to get caught. Frederick Douglas is another person who did extraordinary things, specifically after he escaped from slavery. Although he was nervous to speak to white people about his experience and he says, “ I felt myself a slave… the idea of speaking to white people weighed me down. I spoke for a few moments, when I felt the degree of freedom and said what I desired with considerable ease”. Finally Abraham Lincoln, in Dr. Gurley’s sermon on Lincoln her writes, “ his virtues, of his wise and patriotic counsels and labors…is precious... Though our beloved president in slain, our beloved country is saved”. In other words, Lincoln successfully lead our country through the Civil war and as a result died for doing
