Cultural standards all over the world vary based on religion, economy, morals and numerous other factors. The infamous region of the United States known as Appalachia, where values and standards are as diverse as the hollows that define the region, is no different. Native Appalachian author Sharyn McCrumb inarguably portrays such values and standards that North Carolinian Loyal Jones also outlines in his excerpt from Voices From the Hills. Throughout the novel of She Walks These Hills McCrumb illustrates such traits by depicting life in the mountains of Mitchell County, North Carolina, whose citizens personify the mentioned traits of being independent, hospitality and love of place. As Jones discusses, “individualism, self-reliance and pride”
Though alike in their English heritage, the colonies of New England and the Chesapeake diverged from one another because they were colonized in different ways and for different purposes, giving rise to differing economies, lifestyles, and politics. New England was immensely democratic, possessed a market economy, and was largely centered around family and religion. Contrastly, the Chesapeake made its revenue in tobacco, consisted of mostly single young men, and had aristocratic governance at odds with its poor, farming population. Colonies produced several exports unique to their region. New England, with its vast forests, codfish hordes, and abundant wildlife, chiefly exported fish, ships, timber, fur, and metals.

Since Jesus left no formal authoritative power, organization, or agreed upon scriptures, a wide variety of sects have gained popularity throughout the millennia. Most of these sects the Catholic Church and others later deemed heretical, one of the most notable being Gnosticism. Gnosticism is a dualist religion in which adherents view the material world as evil and the invisible spiritual realm as good.

Vocabulary and language are such major parts of this world. Without the spread of it through trade, it could very well be diminished. Along with the growth of knowledge, Christianity was also impacted. The Islamic trade industry was so monumental that they were able to retain knowledge and spread a religion that would become one of the largest religions in the modern world.
Health Care Disparities Health care disparities are unfortunate and being culturally competent is an essential step toward eliminating these inequalities. In this discussion, I will review what disparities are associated with the Appalachian culture and how they affect health status, employment, and education. I will also identify two nursing interventions that could be taken to help decrease the affect that health disparities have on the Appalachians and review what the biggest challenge would be when implementing the interventions. There are about 27 million people that live in the area defined as the Appalachian region, which spans 13 states.
