Chinese character design As mentioned in the introduction, Chinese writing system is described as logographic. Sice each logogram in Chinese writing system, the character, corresponds to a morpheme and also a syllable, it is also described as a morphosyllabic system (Perfetti & Zhang, 1995 R11). Chinese characters are square-like patterns formed from strokes. Over 80% of Chinese characters are phonetic compound made up of semantic and phonetic radicals (Chen, 1996 S13). There is a tendency that semantic radicals usually appear on the left of phonetic compounds while phonetic radicals usually appear on the right of the phonetic compounds. Feldman and Siok (1997) estimated that this tendency holds for at least 75% of Chinese phonetic compounds. …show more content…
These studies support the presence of the radical level of representation during character recognition. There are studies concerning consistency of character. Yang and Peng (1997S6) conducted a study investigating the consistency effect through naming task by primary school students. They made use of consistent phonetic compounds, inconsistent phonetic compounds as two of the four types of stimuli. There was a significant consistency effect for students across different grades. Characters with higher consistency were read better than those with lower consistency. The study by Lee and her colleagues (2005S13) focused on regularity of character. They conducted three character naming experiments and manipulating properties including character frequency, consistency and regularity. They found that regularity effect was only observed when naming low frequency characters. There are also studies suggesting that neighborhood size of a radical will affect Chinese word character recognition. Su and Weekes (2007) conducted an ERP study aiming at investigating the effect of semantic radical combinability (neighborhood size) on character recognition. They found that when the semantic radicals have a larger neighbour size, there is a more direct access to meaning for recognition. Their ERP result also suggested that semantic radical neighborhood size effect on word recognition reflects lexical access. The above studies supported that radicals are a unit of representation that are important for Chinese character recognition. Then, how are they
Word Identification The QRI-4 guideline suggested Tessa begin reading the word lists at the upper middle grade level, two levels below her current grade level. However, it was necessary to test back to the fifth grade level due to Tessa’s performance on the suggested starting point. Tessa completed the fifth grade word list automatically with 90% accuracy, in the allotted time, signifying she read the words at the independent level. When analyzing the sixth grade word list, Tessa automatically identified 70% of the words, indicating she was identifying words at the instructional level.
In ancient China, each dynasty had contributed to building a wall to protect the borders. In the Qin dynasty, they built a 1,500-2500 miles long, part of the wall. This took from 221-206 BCE. Also, the Han dynasty had built a 4,000 mile long part of the wall. Which took from 206 BCE -220 CE (400 years).
Ava’s oral reading performance of the story, Who Lives Near Lakes?, shows that this book is at her frustrational level. Ava displays both strengths and weaknesses during her oral reading performance. Ava’s strength lies in her use of phonics. However, she shows a weakness in her identification of sight words.
Mesopotamia created brass tools, but China refined bronze casting technology as well as valuable silk cloth production. While language was just symbols back then, the dominant people of Mesopotamia, Sumerians, created the world’s first system of writing, which soon turned into modern day English. Back then, English writing was known as Phonetic writing. Ancient Chinese writing consisted of one radical symbol and one
Lee Chew lived in a unique time period for chinese immigrants in America, preceding the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and living in America after it passed. He was then confronted whether to live in America with the hope of wealth but no hope of being with his family or move back to China. This time period is recorded in a first person biography about Chew’s life, titled Life of a Chinese Immigrant. This primary source was published in a journal, The Independent in 1903. Chew had a very significant encounter with American wealth when a villager brought back huge wealth to the village after going to America.
Phonological awareness is a vital skill to learning to read; however, a child’s dialect use can negatively impact their phonological awareness skills and makes it more difficult for children to learn to read (Mitri & Terry, 2014). To explain, in a study of 119 African American second graders, the children who used AAVE more frequently performed more poorly and chose more dialect sensitive responses, or words that contain features that vary depending on dialect use, on the phonemic awareness tasks than the children who used AAVE less frequently. For example, Mitri and Terry (2014) provided the children with a common word, such as bed, and asked the participants to select the word that resembled the initial word from three possible responses: a SAE match, such as red, a dialect sensitive match, such as net, and a neutral match, such as egg. In this instance, the children who spoke AAVE more frequently were more likely to choose “net” than their peers who used AAVE less frequently due to the common devoicing of final consonants. Additionally, the children with higher phonological awareness had increased reading ability (Mitri & Terry, 2014).
Almost every early historical civilization or dynasty has specific characteristics that make it unique from many others. The Qin Dynasty, for example, has a few characteristics that helped strengthen the dynasty during a very divisive period in Chinese history. Their transition from a period of anarchy to an efficiently operated society was truly remarkable. The Qin dynasty was quickly born after the aftermath of the end of the Zhou dynasty. The Qin Dynasty, ruled by their emperor, Qin Shi Huang-di, recognized that China was too unstable and divisive due to anarchy and disorganized chaos.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is part one of a three part trilogy nicknamed the Millennium Trilogy. The novel was written in Sweden in 2005, by Stieg Larsson. The book sold millions across the world and has been translated into several different languages, including English in 2008. It also has two films one filmed in 2009, and the most recent one in 2011. I believe the novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson is one of the best crime novels on the shelves because of the twisting plot lines of the story, the dynamics of the characters, and the style of writing that Stieg Larsson uses.
The 1950s saw the full development of a design movement that is apparently the most critical visual design style of the twentieth century as far as its sweeping effect, its life span, and its scope of pragmatic applications is concerned. The style started in Switzerland and Germany and is often alluded to as Swiss Style, yet it is formally known as the International Typographic Style. Its strength in numerous territories of graphic design covers a twenty-year period from the early 1950s to the late 60s, yet it remains impactful up till the recent times. As Richard Hollis puts forward in his book “Swiss Graphic Design: The Origins and Growth of an International Style, 1920-1965”, the Swiss Style has vital elements that are widespread throughout
Chinese Spring & Autumn Period (Shang and Zhou Dynasties): Significance of Sun Tzu & His Book “The Art of War” As we know it today, China has been one of the most successful countries in the world, early China is much different from what we know to be the Republic of China. Before becoming one massive country, China was divided into many kingdoms between two very significant rivers, the Yellow and Yangtze rivers. Today, historians conclude that they have been able to uncover facts about the Chinese dynasties to as early as 1700 B.C. Artifacts, bronze weapons, and written records show the successes of an era known as the Shang and Zhou dynasty.
The sound system is more complex and inconsistent in English than in other languages. There are more than 40 different phonemes in spoken English, and there can be a number of different phonemes to represent the same sound (for example, f and ph'). Phonics helps us to look at the different letter patterns together, along with their sounds. Synthetic phonics puts the teaching of letters and sounds into an orderly framework. It requires the reader to learn simpler individual sounds first, then start to put them together to form words, and finally progress to the most complex combinations.
The classification of words in a document should account for word strength and readability. Additionally, the word list look for different forms of the same word. For example: liable, liability, and liabilities would all be ranked at the same word strength. The Loughran and McDonald Word List was established on a large
In addition, interventions to improve phonological awareness abilities lead to significantly improved reading abilities. As Sam & Rojian (2013) added, the relationship between phonological awareness and reading abilities changes over time. All levels of phonemic awareness ability (syllable, onset-rhyme, and phoneme) contribute to reading abilities through early grades. The relationship between phonological awareness and literacy is often explained in terms of its role in decoding and encoding.
New Concepts 1. The first new idea that I learned was from page 27, chapter 2 of Deculturalization. This portion of the chapter reflects on the history of when Sequoyah created a Cherokee alphabet of his own ideas. “The genius of Sequoyah’s alphabet was that because each of the 86 characters matched a particular sound in the Cherokee language, it was possible for a Cherokee to quickly become literate in Cherokee” (Deculturalization 27).
Each image in calligraphy is composed of a minimum number of lines and yet it is easy to recognize each and every symbol. Nouns no doubt came first and than additions were made to the existing symbols to give them
