Christopher Columbus There has been recent confliction amongst American citizens on whether Christopher Columbus should be honoured and respected for the credit he’s been given for discovering the Americas. Christopher Columbus committed great crimes in his lifetime, but he’s still human. Along with his crimes came amazing achievements. With his discovery of the Americas, he changed the world completely. On the other hand, he abused some of his discoveries.
On the second Monday of October, every year children across the country learn about “brave...and..bright” (Marzollo) Christopher Columbus who “In fourteen hundred ninety-two..sailed the ocean blue.” (Marzollo). They’re taught that this Italian explorer and his entourage of curious men befriended the Arakawa natives and genuinely had an all-around good time. Sadly that was not the case. Christopher Columbus should in no way be celebrated, because he was an arrogant man, was the catalyst to slavery in the New World, and committed inhumane acts against the Natives.
Why do we celebrate Columbus day when Christopher Columbus was a man of many sins? He drove people to mass suicide, he took credit for something he did not do, he enslaved and destroyed an entire civilization, and then he is now credited for finding the Americas. The most immoral things happened and I know what you're gonna say, it was perfectly fine back in his time. I get if they celebrated it then but not now not when he enslaved an entire civilization. He didn’t even find America he found the Caribean.
He enforced unfair slavery and harsh commands onto the Taino tribes. He forced adults above the age of fourteen to mine for gold. This mining was so harsh that many died from exhaustion. Columbus penalized many innocent people because of their religion, he was on a mission to spread Christianity. One day a Spaniard went through the hills terrorizing the Indians and stealing their food.
Just around when the international slave trade was starting to grow Columbus and his men captured many people from the west indies and subjected them through violence and cruelty. He forced thousands of people under his rule. Some of these people were sent away to be sold and many of them died on the way. Those who were not sold were forced to work in plantations and gold mines. On Christopher Columbus’s first day in the New World he picked and enslaved several Native americans to become his servants.
Colonial America laid the foundation for the complicated country we call the United States. Historians debate many questions about that critical time period before the thirteen colonies declared and won independence from Great Britain. One of the most interesting questions is: What was the most significant major event preceding the founding of the nation? There is no ‘correct’ answer to this question. There are many possible responses, but the facts show that some arguments are stronger than others.
However. because Columbus brought catastrophes to the Native Americans. many people opposed the Columbus jubilations. They began to believe whether the Columbus Day should be considered as a national vacation in the United States. Surely.
Columbus day should it be celebrated? Some say no. Christopher Columbus is known for being the man that discovered the Americas in 1492, but some people think that he was the sole culprit of genocide, or mass murder of a large group of people, of an certain ethnic group, but usually when people think of genocide they most likely think of Hitler, and the holocaust during WW2, and not a great man who found America, and made Spain rich. Many think that the holiday should still be celebrated like the author of “Sail On”, while not as many people don’t think it should still be celebrated like the author of “Should Columbus have a holiday”. There are five countries in total that celebrate the holiday all three of the Americas(North, South, and Central), Italy, and Spain, but that means that there are hundreds if not thousands of people that don’t think that it should not be celebrated for whatever reason that have for example most of the Native Americans died.
Christopher Columbus is the one who founded the eastern hemisphere and successfully bring over Europeans. That’s what we celebrate him for. We are not celebrating
Additionally, Christopher Columbus enslaved and mistreated the natives. Not only did Christopher Columbus change the culture of the natives but actually tortured them. Columbus used the natives for his own use. “Throughout his years in the Americas, Columbus forced natives to work for the sake of profits. Later, he sent thousands of Taino “Indians” to Spain to be sold, and many of them died during the journey.”
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
Yes we have a holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. But here are some reasons to why he's a evil man. Christopher Columbus mutilated and enslaved native people that he encountered on the Island soon to be called America. He encountered many different Natives when he Started to explore the new land he discovered. There were 60,000 people living on this island.
Christopher Columbus did make a change in history, he still was a bad man because he raped, vandalized things, captured slave, etc. As said in the other article “Sail on!” it also said things similar to the things in the article Christopher Columbus doesn’t deserve a holiday.” But really only people really looked at him as a founder, and a hero
