Differences matter. Both versions of The Great Gatsby are very similar, but also very different. The differences, though, play a much stronger role in how people understand and feel about the book. The similarities are similarities for a reason; they matter in the book, not with how people view the book. The differences, however, say a lot about how the directors and actors feel about F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book.
The Great Gatsby There are two The Great Gatsby movies out their, the 1974 movie directed by Jack Clayton, and the 2013 movie directed by Baz Luhrmann. The novel was originally written in 1925, by author F. Scott Fitzgerald. And wasn 't actually noticed as a great book until he was already passed away. If I were to have to say which movie F. Scott Fitzgerald would prefer more, I would say the 2013 film. I believe the scenes showed in the 2013 movie, directed by Baz Luhrmann, would be more appreciated by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Love, a deep affection for someone or something, is used in most literary pieces whether it is fiction or nonfiction. Each literary piece can have a relation to other love stories based on how the author writes the book. For instance, two books that have similar love stories are The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. These love stories are alike because they try to do everything they can to receive the person they love, the main characters love is inseparable when they are together, and each relationship at the end of the books result in a heartbreak. Even though this is what most relationships experience, these two love stories are unusual.

Similarities There were still some similarities in the film that tied back to the book. Gatsby would do anything for Daisy. In "Romeo and Juliet" they would do anything for each other. Romeo and Juliet both killed themselves in the end so they could be together.
Many things are different between the story and the film, for example Mary prepared her make-up and steadied her voice while preparing to go to the store. Another difference would be the way the short stories were ordered. In the book, the stories were told in no perceptible order, making it hard to remember who is whose daughter/mother etc. The movie begins with a party which all the characters attend, and the stories are disclosed as the character is thinking about it. The mother and daughter’s stories are staged after one another. The movie allows for a more natural way of telling the story, and makes it easier to remember the characters and associate mothers with daughters.
The Great Gatsby is an iconic piece of American literature encompassing the 1920s era in American history. This story was written in 1923 by F. Scott Fitzgerald and was later adapted into a movie in 1949, 1973, 2000, and then once again in 2013. In the 2000 version of the movie the plot line was very similar to the book with only a few major differences and a few discreet ones as well. The movie however, also followed the book very well and even used direct quotes from the book helping you to understand the point Fitzgerald was trying to make. Markowitz the director made many good decisions in this adaptation as well as a few costly mistakes that made the importance of the book and plot line of Fitzgerald’s book.
The first thing with a big difference was the Sorting Hat. In the book, before the Sorting Hat starts placing people in houses, it sings a song but in the movie there is no song. The song in the book adds more character in the hat which makes it a little disappointing
The entire plot of the movie “The Great Gatsby,” directed by Baz Luhrmann, is pretty much very accurate to the novel of the same name written by author F. Scott Fitzgerald. They both center around a man named Jay Gatsby who throws extravagant parties in hope that one day his love Daisy will wander in. Of course like all movies that are based off of books they all have their similarities and differences. Whether they be very small or very noticeable, sometimes even changing the entire story completely, they are still there. Sometimes the purpose of this could be that the director wants to add their own little twist to the story or it could be that they are going for a much deeper meaning or symbolism.
In The Great Gatsby movie, Daisy, for example mostly spoke sweetly throughout the whole movie. In the book, her voice was described as ringing like money. Instead, in the movie she appeared to be an innocent person but was actually extraordinary selfish in her own actions. In the movie, Jay Gatsby had a violent, dramatic outburst at the Plaza Hotel when he was provoked by Tom Buchanan. Another difference would be that Jordan Baker and Nick Carraway did NOT have a loving relationship like in the book; they didn’t communicate in the movie as much as they did in the movie.
