Cosmetic Surgery in Korea: Why Is It So Popular? There have been many studies dedicated to investigate as to why South Korea has one of the highest rates of cosmetic surgery globally. Many point to their patriarchal culture, some point to consumerism, some point to their beauty standards in general. In this paper however, the objective is to relate how South Korea’s beauty standards draw from the consumer culture to significantly view cosmetic surgery as something that is normal in society. In most studies, non-White cosmetic surgery is explained as a means to look more “western”, with taller nose bridges, lighter complexion, and double eyelids (to create a bigger eye shape). This is called the “ethnic cosmetic surgery” where the West is seen as the “host”, making them the aesthetic goal (Holliday & Elfving-Hwang, 2012, p. 64). However, this does not explain procedures such as jaw shaving, which has become increasingly popular in South Korea and calf shaving which is not necessarily a trend in the West (Holliday & Elfving-Hwang, p. 65). Procedures that may be perceived as “whitening” are in fact not as lighter skin has different cultural implications, where in South Korea it is seen as a mark of higher …show more content…
Major local networks started to invest on koreanovelas due to the success these shows received (Peichi, 2013, p. 201). By 2009, local Philippine music channel MYX (under major network ABS-CBN’s management) started airing K-pop music videos such as Super Junior’s Sorry Sorry, and 2NE1’s Fire, which Sandara Park, a former popular Korean actress based in the Philippines, is part of. This essentially was the beginning of the large K-pop following in the
Imagine this. When you walk down the street, you are constantly feeling the stares of passers-by. When you walk in a store, people’s worried glances become impossible to ignore. It isn’t your clothes, or your messy hair that have you worried about people’s stares. It’s the colour of your skin.
In my opinion, plastic surgery will continue to be a serious problem unless we stop plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is now so popular that even young, healthy, attractive woman are choosing to be “enhanced”. Dolly Parton, born Dolly Rebecca Parton is a 65 years old from Tennessee, best know for her work in country music. Dolly described her family as Dirt poor. She grew up with 11 siblings 5 sisters and 6 brothers.
In the article “My Black Skin Makes My Coat Vanish”, the author Mana Lumumba-Kasongo argues that her black skin makes people do not believe she is a doctor. She shares her own experiences of giving the situations when people asked her, where the doctor is. For example, when the author had a patient, a black little girl, refused to let her to treat her, even though she have seen that Dr. Kasongo was wearing a white coat. She felt embarrassed and couldn’t believe that people didn’t believe that she actually has a medical degree. Dr. Kasongo also talked to her peers and she found out that she was not the only one treated in this way.
Although many years have passed, some aspects of the sense of womanhood have still maintained to be the same. Since there are a lot of aspects of beauty that still play a role within the twentieth century, many women are still struggling to find a way to stand up for what they believe is right within the beauty industry alone. By having cosmetic surgeries constantly available to women of any economic status, there are a lot of women spending thousands of dollars in order to make themselves more “acceptable” towards today’s society. Another economic problem occurs within the cosmetic industry is that they are constantly receiving more money and allowing for women to live with their insecurities and transfer them into something fake. From the perspective of many individuals, there have been a lot of inspiring role models within the African American society that have had the opportunity to attempt to influence other women to love who they are and for them to embrace their hair, skin, and who they are.
Keep in mind that some clients have sun tanned areas, freckles, or white patches known as vitiligo. The variations are due to different amounts of melanin in certain areas. A generalized loss of pigmentation is seen in albinism. Dark-skinned clients have lighter-colored palms, soles, nail beds, and lips. Freckle like or dark streaks of pigmentation are also common in the sclera and nail- beds of dark-skinned clients.
Being black in America has become a curse and a blessing for those who identify within the black community. Most mainstream artists that are successful are black, there is biracial president who identifies himself black, and black culture has become the popular culture. Ironically, there in lies the problem with black culture becoming the dominating culture. Everyone wants to be black until police brutality, racism, and a historical prejudice are brought into the mix. In my group our topic was the title of my paper, “Shades of Grey”: Narratives of Black Experience.

There is a large number of skin diseases related to the change of the skin color like vitiligo. It is well known that many people do not have enough information about vitiligo, or about its symptoms. All cultures have different appearances. In the story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan she wrote this story to be a documentary to be an informational story about cultures. In the short story “Two Kinds” the mother and the daughter “Jing- Mei” have a conflict about appearance in their cultures. In the story the mother says to her daughter “Jing-Mei” “You look like a Negro Chinese” (Tan 18). In the story the daughter made a comment to that and said “If I had done this on purpose”.
Cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery is defined as a form of medicine focused on making enhancements to the body. It is intended to correct flawed areas on the body and is restoring in its nature. This type of surgery can be performed on the head, body, and neck. During a study, performed by Dr. Jane Weston and Anne Pearl, they found out high school junior’s opinions on cosmetic surgery. According to Attitudes of Adolescents About Cosmetic Surgery, “A survey of the junior class of a California suburban high school showed that one-third of respondents would consider undergoing cosmetic surgery.”
When Senora Valencia’s twin boy and girl were born she had them examined by a doctor in the Dominican Republic. As the darker-skin daughter was cleaned and bathed by the doctor, the doctor observes; “‘She has a little charcoal behind the ears, that one,’ Doctor Javier boldly told Senora Valencia as he lifted her daughter from the water”(17). The daughter has darker skin which scares the Dominican parents because people in their society are looked down upon if they have darker skin or are Haitian. So when the Doctor attempted to purify the daughter because she appeared slightly darker, it was not appreciated that her dark skin remained present. The water used to bathe her is used discretely to purify the daughter from her color of skin and to a life with lighter skin in order to find happiness for herself and be successful.
Also, cosmetic procedures have increased by 39% over the past five years (from 2011) with surgical procedures up 17% and nonsurgical procedures up 44%(ASPS statistics). It shows that young women are willing to put themselves in danger because they feel the need to meet society's expectations of beauty. When going into cosmetic surgery, there is a risk of death or side effects that people are aware of, but still undergo the procedure. All because we live in a world where first impressions are made by how we look and thanks to magazines advertisements they set the “ideal” look for us and we all try to reach that look no matter how it
1.0 Introduction 1.1 Background of the Issue This report is written to find out the pros and cons of cosmetic surgery to people as well as how much cosmetic surgery has benefited people both positively and negatively. Cosmetic surgery procedures have been performed back in the early 1800s, which means it has been in existence for centuries as what history has suggested. Besides that, the development of cosmetic surgery states that it started to gain popularity since the 1970s and 1980s. Cosmetic surgery can be defined as the operative procedure as improvement of appearance is the principal purpose (Medical Dictionary for the Dental Professions, 2012).
"Today, hundreds of thousands of aesthetic plastic surgery procedures are conducted each year" (Petechuk, 2014, p. 4). People do not think twice about having a procedure done because they have enough money. People believe that insecurities can be fixed to make themselves feel better. Unfortunately, people all over the world are having surgeries done. Most might not think this is unfortunate, but some do.
The practice of modifying one’s skin as a means of expression has been active for as long as 5300 years (Haskings-Winner, Collichaw, Kritzer, & Warecki, 2011). However, in modern day societies the stigma against body modification, including tattoos is still prevalent. To understand why people of a North American influence would subject themselves to this potential undermining, one must first uncover what motivates a person to permanently enhance their skin. Primarily, research into the topic, history, traditions, modern meanings, was conducted using printed resources, online databases, and online-published journals. Notes and condensed summaries of said research was used to create survey questions and a general audience was decided.
For my own understanding about plastic surgery, it is a reconstruction of body and facial to satisfy our wants and also to help us. Base on internet, "Plastic Surgery is concerned with restoration, reconstruction, correction, or improvement in shape and appearance of body structures that are defective, damaged or misshapen by injury, disease or growth and development."[1 ] Plastic Surgery can cause a good and bad one. It depends on how people choose it to be. In the question if plastic surgery should be banned or not, I will answer not, why?
