In the novel The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is a very wealthy man who lives in West Egg. He grew up not having money at all but changed that in order to better himself. He was born by the name John Gats and then later changed it once he had made all of his money. Jay Gatsby made his money illegally through organized crime; he sold illegal alcohol and stolen securities. From making all of this money, he now has one of if the biggest houses in West Egg. Despite Jay Gatsby seeming to be a man who is all about his money and nothing else, he really made his money for love, thus showing that he is actually very affectionate and selfless. When Gatsby was younger, Daisy and he were in love. However, at this time, Daisy was very wealthy due to her family’s money but Gatsby had not yet made his money so he was poor. Daisy did not know this at the time, because he always wore his uniform for the army. Gatsby was shipped off to the war for a long time, leaving Daisy alone. He was gone for a long time, and when he came back he found out that Daisy had moved on. Daisy had also found out that Gatsby had no money. When this happened, Gatsby became really angry and set out to make as much money as he could with the sole purpose that he would get Daisy back he made enough money. These emotions drove him so make his money illegally. Once he makes an incredible amount of money, he moves to West Egg. Gatsby finally ends up running into Daisy. They end up hanging out a bit and Daisy then finds out that Gatsby is one of the richest men in the area. When they are at Gatsby’s house, he starts throwing shirts, and she says, “They’re such beautiful shirts,’ she sobbed, her voice muffled in thick folds. ‘It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such-such beautiful shirts before” (p92). As he is saying this, she is crying because she is realizing that that is what she could have had if she had stayed with Gatsby. She seems to be in love with men who have lots of money and
