English is spoken worldwide by more than 340 million native speakers and the use of English for international communication is constantly growing (Gordon and Grimes, 2005). Therefore, this language has huge varieties globally. However, it is noteworthy that American English and British English are the two most important. Conversely, although many English learners have already had chances to hear American English and British English, at least on the Internet and in films, some of them may not recognize the differences between the American and British in general and their pronunciation in particular. Likewise, it is necessary to underline that the diversity in pronunciation is one the most difficulties for English, foreign learners because the …show more content…
Trudgill (1984:32) stated that standard English is a social dialect which can be defined as “a set of grammatical and lexical forms typically used in speech and writing by educated native speakers”. Meanwhile, for Yule, he deemed that standard English is the version “found in printed English in newspapers and books, is widely used in the mass media and is taught in most school” (Yule, 2006). In the context of language learning, in america General American pronunciation (henceforth GA) is considered as the standard pronunciation which conveys the politics status, social position and education. This accent has achieved a dominant position with two-third of the USA population employ (IPA, 1999:4) and is considered not marking any “regional north-eastern or southern characteristics”. (Trudgill, P., & Hannah, J. 2013). In term of British English, despite the huge variation in the pronunciation, Received Pronunciation (henceforth RP) adopted as a conservative model and more familiar with the world, is spoken by only 2% of the United Kingdom population (Wells, J. 2008). In spite of a small number of people implementing, RP is still regarded as a standard model of pronunciation in Britain because of its voice representation of education, authority, economic power. It is probably the most widely studied in the world. Nowadays, General American and Received Pronunciation accents are represented by the BBC and CNN. These two viral channels is arguably the most well-know English broadcasting standard accents, flexible and closed to real life language. Moreover, these accents have made a wide distribution to the pronunciation model of modern English. As a results, this essay will utilize the videos from these two channels as
“So many words were still unknown that when the butcher and the lady at the drugstore said something to me, exotic polysyllabic sounds would bloom in the midst of their sentences. Often, the speech of people in public seemed to be very loud, booming with confidence. The man behind the counter would literally ask, ‘What can I do for you?’ But by being firm and so clear, the sound of his voice said that he was a gringo; he belonged in the public society”(12). Rodriguez describes the way English sounds to him creating an image that the language was very complex to in his perspective.
As discussed in the article by Clive Thompson, many people use different ways of speaking. Based on text conversations, social media posts, and comments language has made a drastic change. TBH grammar has made like a huge change on society. Lookin at billboards and social media, people post is a totally diff manner than speaking. Lol I remember the last conversation I had with my aunt that lives in Charleston, SC.
On the other hand, Sally, who is a native born British Speaker, omits the “r” and extends the open-mid, back vowel (line 12). The same goes for the word “what” in which Sally omitted the letter “t” in the word “what” (line 8), which compared to American English speakers, there is no omitting of the “t.” That is why I sounded weird trying to imitate her pronunciation of the word (on the recording my intonation was slightly higher than Sally’s). This is interesting because similar results – the omitting of t’s within British English – has been observed in other research papers such as “Drilling Down to the Grain in Superdiveristy” from Ben Rampton (2015). Witnessing that evidence that has been pointed out in other articles was intriguing.
The way people speak has to do with the community they grew up in, along with the phrases and accents that they use, which is affected by the region that an individual lives in. In America, there are many diverse dialects possibly because of the numerous cultures brought from the immigrants that came to America. As Walt Whitman said, “Viewed freely, the English language is the accretion and growth of every dialect, race, and range of time, and is both free and compacted composition of all.” There are many different regions of American English. One of them is called the Pacific Southwest, a region that covers California.
Throughout the deaf community, there is diversity. It doesn’t matter if you can hear or not everywhere a person goes diversity will show. Deaf people know how to understand and deal with diversity better verbal people do. Children who have hearing parents or raised in a hearing household are more likely to adopt the view of deafness as a disability rather than a culturally hearing identity (Yael). Parents tried to speak with their deaf child rather than trying to learn how to communicate with them.

Try to keep our own accent from a new language, keep speaking own language, and remember the way your speech of the own language, even we outside the world, we learning new language and the way we communication each other in new world, don’t forget your own speech, accent and pronunciation. As part of the comprehensive argument, Lederer try to support and understanding the speech in different regions and make a connection with his experience and share to the world to know the language is not going but
Language, though primarily used as a means of communication, can be used to form community-like bonds with additions to and evolutions of different regional, cultural, racial, etc., vernaculars. What is one community’s “how are you?” is another’s “what’s good?” or “‘sup?” Those terms are understood and accepted almost unilaterally in their respective communities, but beyond those borders, they may or may not be. The push to broaden mandating “proper English pronunciation” is a direct attack on those communities that do not fall in the narrow definition of those whose community is deemed “correct” by mainstream society. When this is enforced, its roots are usually found in racism/white supremacy.
The three main influences that are affecting “America’s English” language would be Technology, Cultural diversity, and slang. Technology is very influential in “America’s English” because it is both used frequently and used globally. Majority Americans have some sort of connection with technological devices; whether its using a computer, having a smartphone or even watching television shows. Technology now days is considered a very powerful and useful source whether it’s used for stating one opinions and thoughts, or even as a source of communication; it’s even used globally to broadcast weather, and local crimes. Technology is believed to be both a necessity and a means that will help by applying knowledge to applied purposes.
Throughout the article, Tan uses a number of personal examples to show and support her point. These examples span from phone conversations and hospital visits to standardized tests. By using examples that cover a wide variety of topics, Tan is able to demonstrate the large effect that her mother’s style of english had and how it was woven into her whole life and not just a part of it. Particularly in the hospital example, Tan also brings in the stereotyping of people who speak “broken” english as not being very smart. In bringing this issue that is at the very root of our society, she darkens the tone to melancholy.

On the one hand, some do not recognize AAVE’s existence but tend to describe it most of all as a colorful slang or an English dialect. On the other hand instead, some believe that AAVE is a separate language from Standard English. Beyond this opposition, many linguists and scholars wonder themselves whether AAVE is to be considered as a creole or as a variety of a language separate from the North American varieties of English. (Mufwene, 2001:
“Who controls articulation?” Jamila Lyiscott asks in her video for TED Talks, “because the English language is a multifaceted oration subject to indefinite transformation.” The English language began in England and traversed the world through substantial colonization. As a product of those colonies, the language evolved into separate dialects, developing unique idioms, slang, and word spelling according to each area of the globe. That centuries long process has crucially demonstrated that no matter the age, education level, or opinions of one’s audience, culture will in some way have an impact.
Introduction: Imagine living in a world where a slightly creak in your voice can stop you from getting a job. As unfair as that may sound, this can and do happen. Whether good or bad, people are judged based on their appearance and presentation of oneself, and how people talk is no exception. It is not farfetched to say that if a person wants to be taken seriously, they would try to speak more intelligently and carefully. In my research, I am going to examine how people can be perceived and how they are affected by the way they sound.
Finally, for mainly historical reasons, certain English dialects or varieties have been viewed more positively than others. Thus, Standard English, because of its association with being the national English language, has been perceived as the most prestigious of English varieties. However, the fact that some dialects and accents are seen to be more prestigious than others is more a reflection of judgements based on social, rather than linguistic, criteria. As society changes, so too do attitudes towards dialect, accent and variational use of English generally.
