Sophia Mechler Mrs. Fenlon Honors English III 22 March 2023 Title While reading literature created during the 1920s, the reader learns about different characters. Some of them are morally good, while others lack a soul and are empty inside. Human Intelligence The reason that certain events have occurred is for the human strive to gain intelligence. In the story, Flowers of Algernon, the main character is a mentally retarded adult, Charlie Gordon. In the story, he wants to become smart; and there is a surgery that can triple his IQ, but the doctors are not sure of the consequences that will occur from the surgery. The reason for this is because so far it they have only tested animals.
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, The Great Gatsby, he created a morale haze that intensified the characters complexity, which enhanced their characterization. Nick Carraway, the most complex of the characters presented so far, had a moral dilemma, though it did not appear that way. His use of thick vocabulary was used to establish his false moral superiority to convince the audience that he could be trusted, which allowed Fitzgerald to lure the audience into a psychological trap giving them the impression that Nick was reliable, thus creating the illusion that he was trustworthy. Nick’s hypocrisy, however, made it obvious that he was not reliable. Fitzgerald used his dilemma to create breadcrumbs of hints of his intense struggle throughout the first
In Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled man, is transformed and made intelligent through surgery. As the story develops the reader notices changes and new hardships that Charlie begins to face as a result of the life changing operation. In our society intelligence is seen as the golden ticket to every opportunity imaginable. What people fail to realize though is that it is not through easy access that intelligence is acquired but by experiencing and learning new ideas. Keyes, makes an absolute statement about the role of intelligence in human life, by showing that having immense intelligence is not always ideal because it forces one to realize not only how different they are from others in their society, but also how they are expected to behave with this intelligence.
In both stories, The Watsons go to Birmingham and Making Sarah cry has the same themes being different. In the story The Watsons go to Birmingham, they faced discrimination. Also in the story Making Sarah Cry the bully was getting bullied and Sarah came and said “ stop bullying him because he is a friend of mine” and when the bully’s stopped bully boy and bullied Sarah the boy also stood up for Sarah,This is being different because before the boy used to bully Sarah but now that he saw that Sarah stood up for him so did he. This two stories are different because of their affect on society. One story is about race and the other story is about a girl getting bullied on the playground.
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it’s stupid.” Einstein's words are crucial to understanding how important it is to use your intelligence in the proper way. Einstein realized that everyone has more than one kind of intelligence, and if we don’t use them in a positive way we would be better off if we didn’t have them at all. Your intelligences are a gift and if they aren’t used properly, they may be harming others.
