These kinds of messages are much more appealing for me, as a (still) novice listener. Other genres with these same kinds of themes are more appealing to me personally than the mainstream hip-hop vibe, because they are relatable. I think, at its core, music is about people and coming together—for a cause or a jam session or just a good time. Questlove talks about that a little in his final installment: we should focus on the ritualistic aspect of music first, rather than the commercial “product” that is music. I completely agree.
The article “Hip Hop Planet” by James McBride is about how hip hop is not his favorite type of music but, it needs to be heard. McBride shows us this by explaining that he avoided hip hop most of his life. In the article McBride says that he basically ignored “the most important cultural event in my lifetime.” James informs us that hip hop has influenced the world globally and that it has become a phenomenon. Furthermore, McBride made clear that he eventually realized that hip hop is much more than just music, it has a message.
Kendrick Lamar is an American rapper and songwriter from Compton, California. Lamar has been releasing music since 2004 and has won several awards, including 17 Grammys and a Pulitzer Prize. Many of his songs touch on political issues and the black experience.” The song, “Alright,” featuring Pharrell Williams and Thundercat, was included in his album “To Pimp A Butterfly” which was released in 2015. This song has over 48 million streams on Spotify and Lamar has performed it live many times.
Finally, hip-hop is inspirational and powerful because it summons people to come together and discard the social and racial issues they are faced
Music changes with the times, just like people do. Music is also an important part of all cultures, but some genres of music were actually a direct creation of war. War brings violence, turmoil, and stress to many, which is why these people used music to escape. However, music also helped soldiers during the wars. The soldiers use music to cope with the cruelty of war.
Music has power. Rather, music is power. Music is expression. Music shows emotion. Music holds memories.
My all time favorite artist is Frida Kahlo. Not only was she an amazing artist but she was an intricate and articulate woman. She went through many hardships in her life and she expressed her emotion through her wonderfully surreal paintings. Like many successful artists, Frida had many skeletons in her closet and she wasn’t perfect in anyway.
Hip Hop is seen as something inspiring, but most people see it as a way to speak out the truth about a problem. As in “Hip Hop planet” being able say the truth can sometimes worsen any situation because sometimes what we say can promote violence and whatever happens after is not in our control. The essay is about how hip hop has changed into speaking out the issues that need to be taken care of in order to maintain a proper society. McBride talked about how rappers use violent lyrics to degrade women and gays and because of this it shows how the music has evolved into something entirely different that no one would have ever expected to have changed. In James McBride's essay “Hip Hop Planet,” he argues that hip hop has a negative influence on American Culture despite people thinking of it as inspirational and how people live through different experiences in life despite of your race.
In 1835, Henry Longfellow stated, “music is the universal language of mankind.” Music is incredible in its agility to provide an exorbitant array of sounds, sentiments, rhythms, and genres, and in its ability to illustrate the immense depth and emotion that words cannot express. Music has evolved immensely throughout the past thousand years and more, from its origins in the Medieval Period, beginning with the Gregorian Chant, progressing to the current cinematic, magical music created by great composers such as James Howard Newton among others. Throughout the centuries, music has found its way into the hearts of people in society, through its realistic depictions of life to escapist fantasy. When did music begin?
What many people seem to miss is that the culture is meant to express and not repress. Generally speaking, talent is a key importance in rapping. However, the power to address viewers of ethical conflicts in our environment through music should be considered more important than talent. Artists such as Tupac Shakur use music to educate his audience of the specific cultural barriers which negatively impact black communities. In addition, Dr. Dre was influenced by Tupac and began to inspire other artists, such as Nas.
They suppose that listening to cheerful music would be a good idea. On the contrary studies have proven a correlation, which seems there is a some type of relief in listening to other people 's struggles, the demons they deal with and how they overcame them. "Hip-hop in general, and rap in particular, often carry messages that are much more composite therefore is not properly appreciated," This is what makes Hip hop an ideal medium for helping individuals understand their psychological problems and for finding ways to deal with
“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything” (Plato). If my childhood was filled with anything: it was imagination. From my earliest memories of my cousin, and I putting on a sold out concert on my papaw’s front porch; to putting my baby dolls to sleep with lullabies. Music has always been a big part of my life: it was the one thing I could always count on, no matter where I went; and that still stands true today.
I agree with Michaela Angela Davis decision to leave hip-hop behind in the essay “Quitting Hip-Hop” because hip-hop degrades women and portrays the industry as money makers. I feel humiliate in a way they depict women in most hip-hop music videos. For example, women are half-naked and dances shameful in the videos. There is no reason musically for the women to be in almost naked in a video and expected to make more money. The author also believes that the videos in the hip-hop industry portray women as money makers.
Music has always been a part of my life. In definition, it is “vocal or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” Ever since I was a young child, I have loved music. The strong, steady beats, the entrancing melodies, and the lyrics that vary between heartwarming and heart-wrenching have always had an unexplainable effect on my life. Music seems to have the ability to change certain aspects of my world.
Development of music history from Medieval period to Baroque Period Music exists in every known cultural group of the world and it is likely to have existed among the ancient ancestral communities. Music may have started in Africa, having existed for at least 55,000 years before evolving into an essential constituent of human life. Different people have different perspectives towards music. For instance, some may take music as jazz set, an orchestral symphony, an electronic beat or even a simple thing as the chirping of birds. Music has both positive and negative effect on humans and it depends on how it is applied.
