Essay On Rain Water Harvesting

813 Words4 Pages

Rain water harvesting is one of the most effective methods of water management. It is the term used to indicate the collection and storage of rain water used for human, animals and plant needs. It involves collection and storage of rain water that runs off natural or manmade catchment areas, for example roof top, compounds, rock surface, tanks etc. The water supply in India is under tremendous stress. During drought the situation worsens. Thus, the study focuses mainly on the different techniques adopted for water management from rain during the monsoon. The paper is based on secondary data which are been collected from various sources like journals, websites, newspapers, publications etc.

On one hand there is the problem of water scarcity and on the other, the streets are often flooded during the monsoons. This has led to serious problems with quality and quantity of both surface and groundwater. In order to conserve and meet the daily demand of water requirement, it’s time to think for alternative cost effective and relatively easier technological methods so that water can be conserved. One of the best methods fulfilling those requirements is Rain water harvesting. It is used to collect runoff or flood water for storage in the soil profile or in tanks so that it can be used for the production of crops, trees or fodder. It can also be the collection of runoff water for human or livestock consumption. Rain water harvesting includes increasing the recharge of groundwater by collecting and storing the rainwater. This can be done by constructing special harvesting structures like dug well, shaft, dug pits, trench, a reservoir with percolation, or it can be collected from dew or fog with nets or other tools. The harvested water can be used as drinking water, water for gardens, irrigation, livestock and for other purposes such as groundwater
