Foods and food products need to be safe and nutritious as it is essential to human health and well-being. However, food borne diseases are a significant problem . Food borne disease is any illness resulting from the consumptin of contaminated food with disease causing agents present. Therefore to prevent these spoilage of foods from occurring ,it is important to know the organisms that are responsible for food spoilage and the foods that they may spoil.(Barth et al ,2009).
Food can be classified into non -perishable ,semi perishable and perishable goods. Foods that are non perishable such as oats ,are not spoilt under normal conditions. Therefore the spoilage of non perishable foods are rare,if there is proper handling and storage. semi perishable

Fruits and vegetables contain a natural protective barrier, however spoilage microorganisms can still be detected on surfaces of fruits and vegetables. These microorganisms are generally are found in the soil. (Saranraj et al,2012). Spoilage microorganisms of fruits and vegetables ,can be introduced to the seed itself or can enter plant tissues during fruit development, either through the calyx or along the stem. However for microorganisms to have successful establishment, it as to overcome multiple protection barriers.(Barth et al ,2009) . Microorganisms can also contaminate fruits and vegetables during harvesting, postharvest handling, or during storage and distribution. (Barth et al …show more content…

Hunting nightmare bacteria Answer the following questions Case of Addy (the girl from Arizona ) 1- Based on the pediatrician observations what was Addy’s diagnosis at the Pediatric Hospital intensive care unit ? She had got infected by staff or positive bacteria called Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA is a community associated bacteria that infects kids when they are playing in playing ground and getting scabs on their knee. They spread through that wound and it has very high resistance to antibiotics.
The purpose of this lab report is to employ a myriad of skills, tools and, methods learned throughout this semester to perform the appropriate tests for the identification of the assigned unknown bacteria. Add more background information here!!! The most important tools and techniques used during this identification include aseptic technique, microscopic examination and, the use of selective and differential media. Aseptic technique is an important tool for microbiologists. It is imperative that aseptic technique is maintained throughout the length of any test to avoid any cross-contamination that may lead to inaccurate results.
The article “Cucumbers Recalled in Salmonella Outbreak” was written by Ashley Southall and published in the New York Times in July 2015. The public health issue is the salmonella outbreak from contaminated cucumbers. Salmonella is an issue because this bacteria cause’s people to become ill and some people may even die. The Center for Disease Control found out that the cucumbers came from Mexico and they were distributed by a produce company known as Andrew&William Fresh Produce. The cucumbers were distributed to 22 states, but 18 of them reported the infections, which included Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah.
Winnable Battle- Safe Food Objectives: Approximately 1 of 6 people in America get sick from eating contaminated food. Some people recover and few others may suffer from complication such as kidney failure, miscarriage or brain and nerve damage (10 Colorado winnable battles). In Colorado, there is at least 41% of foodborne outbreaks report and investigation each year. This is an enormous number that underscores the need for vigilance and highlights the importance of the food safety programs to identify foodborne illnesses (10 Colorado winnable battles).
A starch agar plate was inoculated with a streak of the unknown bacteria and then incubated. On the second day of incubation, the plate was removed from the incubator and placed over a hot plate heating Iodine solids. The smoke of the Iodine stained the plate to display the presence or absence of a halo around the bacteria 2.12 Lipid Hydrolysis This test was done by making a single line streak inoculation on a tributyrin agar plate and allowing incubation. After the incubation period, the plate was observed for the presence or absence of a halo around the bacteria.
Question: Is Mcdonald’s hamburgers safe to eat? Hypothesis: Mcdonald 's hamburger meat contains bacterias that are harmful to the human body. Test the Hypothesis •We can test Mcdonald’s hamburger meat for bacteria. If we find bacterias in the meat we should identify what type of bacteria it is, and what effect does it have on the human body.
Chipotle is one of the most successful restaurant in the U.S. but every organization got some weakness and problems, today I would like to share with you what is the biggest chipotle’s problem ever that cost this restaurant a lot of money and lose trust from costumers and bad image in the media which is POISONING !! :- The fifth-biggest multistate sustenance harming flare-up of 2015 was the E. coli episode connected to nourishment served at Chipotle eateries in nine states. No less than 52 people were sickened, 20 of them were hospitalized. The episode was one of a few nourishment harming flare-ups connected to Chipotle this year including a Salmonella flare-up that sickened more than 60 individuals in Minnesota.
Honey, is a very concentrated sugar solution with a high osmotic pressure, making impossible the growth of any microorganisms. It contains fewer microorganisms than other natural food; especially there are no dangerous Bacillus species. Honey contains Bacillus bacteria, causing the dangerous bee pests, but these are not toxic to humans. That is why, to prevent bee pests, honey should not be disposed in open places, where it can easily be accessed by bees. However, some bacteria are present in honey, most of them being harmless to man.
The bacteria, which is found in flies’ natural food source rotting fruit, was represented by the yeast, and the sugar was represented by the maple syrup. The purpose was to be able to identify which substances the flies were attracted to the most
Catechol oxidase is found in cell cytoplasm, their function in plants are to "help protect damaged plants bacterial and fungal disease." The objective of this experiment is to test the presences of catechol oxidase in various fruits and vegetables. Our group hypothesis states that, If catechol oxidase is present in the selected extracts, the null hypothesis is that catechol oxidase is not present in the selected extracts. Next, the prediction would be, if catechol oxidase doesn't differ with other enzyme sources, then the rates will
In the US, 40% of food produced, or approximately 365 million pounds of food, is wasted each day. Food waste, however, is a problem that extends beyond America, affecting billions of people as a global issue. The overwhelming amounts of food that are being discarded contribute to global warming and climate change, and prevent the massive number of hungry people from being able to eat nourishing meals. Humanity as a whole must be more mindful of the Earth and its health, as we are the source which most directly affect it. Due to the profound environmental impacts of food waste, a reduction in the amount disposed is necessary to create a more sustainable environment, and humans have a responsibility to protect the planet, even if it requires drastic changes to the current food system.
Food Safety In today’s society we have progressed tremendously when it comes to safety in the food industry. We are no longer in the times where food places are allowed to serve food in filthy conditions. There are a large number of acts that have been passed in order to ensure the wellbeing of the public. Some of the stepping stone acts being the Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.
Staphylococcal enterotoxins are thermostable and maintain heating to such a temperature at which staphylococci themselves are killed. The incidence is quite high. In fact, it is higher in the summer than at other times of the year. The reason most often is related to meat dishes and cakes with custard, perhaps because staphylococci, being resistant to high concentrations of protein, salt and sugar, thrive in these products without being competitive. Outbreaks are usually associated with the consumption of food with long shelf life at room temperature.
Escherichia Coli 0157: H7 This paper will specialize on a specific type of bacterial foodborne illness caused by the bacteria Escherichia Coli. E. coli was discovered by Theodore von Escherich in 1885. E.coli is a natural found bacteria that lies throughout the intestinal tract of warm blooded animals and comes in many forms only one of which is deadly. This form is E. coli 0157:H7 which can be caused by direct exposure to fecal matter to kill this rouge
