Food Insecurity may Negatively Affect Student’s Academic Performance
Background on Food Insecurity Food insecurity which can be defined as inadequate access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets individuals’ dietary needs is concurrently associated with children’s psychological difficulties (Melchior, Chastang, Galera, et. al, 2016). Food insecurity addresses that problems from inadequacy of food intake and diet burdens children’s mental activity and reduces social equality in development. People tend to buy foods that are high in calories and fat content because they are cheaper than those healthy foods which cost more (Hallion, N/A). Rising food costs can have major impact on vulnerable households, pushing those least able to cope further into poverty and hunger. High prices, especially for the most vulnerable can have a devastating impact on their welfare, nutrition and food security. Food insecurity can negatively impact students’ ability to focus, which in turn can affect academic performance.
Our challenge is that there is no sufficient capacity in the world to produce enough food to feed everyone adequately. The basic elements of food security, including food availability, access, and utilization, are reviewed as are more recent developments in the field, including livelihood analysis, vulnerability, and risk management strategies should be implemented here in the Philippines.
