Background on Food Insecurity Food insecurity which can be defined as inadequate access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets individuals’ dietary needs is concurrently associated with children’s psychological difficulties (Melchior, Chastang, Galera, et. al, 2016). Food insecurity addresses that problems from inadequacy of food intake and diet burdens children’s mental activity and reduces social equality in development. People tend to buy foods that are high in calories and fat content because they are cheaper than those healthy foods which cost more (Hallion, N/A). Rising food costs can have major impact on vulnerable households, pushing those least able to cope further into poverty and hunger. High prices, especially for the most vulnerable can have a devastating impact on their welfare, nutrition and food security. Food insecurity can negatively impact students’ ability to focus, which in turn can affect academic performance.
Our challenge is that there is no sufficient capacity in the world to produce enough food to feed everyone adequately. The basic elements of food security, including food availability, access, and utilization, are reviewed as are more recent developments in the field, including livelihood analysis, vulnerability, and risk management strategies should be implemented here in the Philippines.

A large population around the globe, including the united States of America, experience hunger and the consequences because of shortage or lack of the right type of food. A “No Kid Hungry” TV commercial, launched in 2010 by Share Our Strength food network organization, uses different components of appeal to captivate/persuade viewers to partner with the food banks and other programs to resolve the issues of hunger among children in America. The author of the commercial, Bill Shore, founded the food network organization in 1984 with a $ 2,000 cash advance credit card.
After watching the documentary "A Place at the Table" I have a lot of new views about the food insecurity and how kids are struggling with the hunger. Food insecurity plays a huge role in the development and treatment of pediatric overweight. Children who are at lower socioeconomic status, their parent(s) receives food stamps or have financial issues will choose processed and fast food to feed their family because they are cheaper than buying healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Another factor that contributes to obesity in children is that parents may lack the education on how to provide a healthy diet on low income and nutritional education and needed to feed their children a healthy diet. For example, food insecurity is considered a major social determinant of health. Food Insecurity occurs when people do not have access to adequate and nutritional foods necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle (Lombe et al, 2016). There is a direct relationship between one’s social economic status and the type of food they can afford. Households living below the poverty line lack the resources financially to afford healthier or organic food alternatives. What is more, they may not have the means of transportation to get to those supermarkets where healthier foods are sold.

In the discussions of food insecurity, one controversial issue has been the prevalent misconception of why people are suffering from obtaining nutritious food on a consistent basis. On one hand, Frank Eltman, a writer for the Business facet of the Huffington post, argues that university students are facing food insecurity due to college expenses exponentially rising within the past decade. On the other hand, Adam Appelhanz, a police officer featured in the documentary “A Place at the Table,” contends that due to budget constraints he has not received a pay raise in the last four years, and is now inevitably utilizing a local food bank in order to ensure that he has something to eat each month. In the world, there are one billion people undernourished and one and a half billion more people overweight. In this day and age, where food has become a means of profit rather than a means of keeping people thriving and healthy, Raj Patel took it upon himself to explore why our world has become the home of these two opposite extremes: the stuffed and the starved. Food Insecurity The continuous increasing demand for the food requires the rapid improvement in food production technology. In a country like Ethiopia, the economy is mainly based on agriculture and the climate conditions are isotropic, still we are not able to make full usage of agricultural resources. The main reason is the lack of rains and scarcity of the land reservoir water in some areas of the country.
World Hunger affects a significant amount of people all around the world. It is an issue that everyone should be aware of. The future is bright but there are lots of steps left to figuring out a way to end world hunger. From my research, my intention is to inform the reader about what is hunger, what are the causes, what are the effects of it, where does it mostly occur, and how can we end it. Someone who is severely hungry is someone who is incapable of accessing food on a consistent basis.
The Effects of Poverty, Homelessness, and Hunger in Education Even before a child is born, they are affected by their environment. Poverty in children can be seen at a very young age. Mothers that live in poverty have babies with low birth weight and medical problems. Poverty, homelessness, and hunger can have extremely negative effects on the brain and body.
