Self Assessment: Jacob Thomas As a writer, I have grown in many ways, First I took English Comp 150 last semester. This class taught me a lot about my life due to a book we read The Last Lecture. However, I did not like to read so I showed much resentment towards it. As the deadline approached I finally opened the book that would make me love to read again. In school there is many classes where I can express creativity just like Dr Seuss did in his imaginative books.
The author of this analysis paper is Emily Brown, a student attending Brigham Young University–Idaho. She has recently begun her fourth semester as a Child Development major. She is taking an advanced writing and research class, which led to the following work. To prepare to write this paper she has read a book, from the series Ranger’s Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorlan, by John Flanagan. This piece analyzes a packet written by Robyn Sheahan-Bright called House of Legends Teaching Support Kit that promotes fantasy and science fiction.
Though it is a book that has been on the censored list, Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is a worthy novel to continue in the high school curriculum due to its accurate portrayal of the time period. As a student reading this novel after many extensive United States history classes and the previous year taking AP United States History, I felt a new outlook after reading a fictional story about the matters of the depression and dust bowl of the 30’s. Steinbeck’s use of literary depiction strengthens the novel and makes it more than just a recollection of the time. In my sophomore year of high school, my English teacher assigned the class to a read a novel of our choice and report back what we liked most about it. My choice was Ethan Frome and I read the book repeatedly just so I could connect back to the characters and the setting of the novel. When I completed my sophomore year in high school, I discovered my passion for literature and the genres that accompanied it. I always knew that undergraduate studies would be my chance to grow more with my new found interest. .After high school I attended Mississippi Valley State University, a Historically Black University, where I majored in English and graduated with honors.
Have you ever wondered whether a writer’s voice and the standard rules of academic writing can exist on the same page? According to Dr. Debra Pena, English Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), and Mathew Teorey, English Professor at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and the author of "Using Freshman Composition to Analyze What Students Really Know about Grammar", a writer’s voice and the process of academic writing can exist on the same page (Personal Communications February 13, 2017, Teorey 2). However, my first essay in Freshman Composition II was a Classical Argument on “Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE): Is it the New Death Sentence for Future Athletes Playing Sports in America?”
AP English and Dual Enrollment Government have prepared me the most for college. My AP English teacher opened my eyes to different types of literature and sources that is constantly referenced in my first college classes at Tidewater Community College. for example, Karl Marx is quoted a lot in the many theories of sociology. My Dual Enrollment Government course prepared me for this ample amount of reading in college. My professor would provide my class with multiple reading assignments to push our reading limits.
We have reached the end of the semester unconsciously. During this semester, we’ve practiced and improved our writing by outlining, composing, editing, and revising. Throughout the process, I discovered my strengths and weaknesses, meanwhile, I tried hard to refine my writing skills. By now, we have focused on a few types of writing: rhetorical analysis, critical analysis, and argument. Remembered our first in-class essay was a rhetorical analysis of an argument.
