Madison McDonald Dr. Travis Montgomery ENGL 2213-02 16 March 2018 Violence in The Aeneid The Aeneid is bursting with violent acts from the beginning to the end. The main character, Aeneas, constantly faces conflict from both humans and gods. Aeneas is a Trojan hero and prince who embodies pietas, driven by duty, honor, and devotion, which makes him an example of an ideal Roman citizen. Aeneas was called by the gods and determined to be a successful founder of Rome, but he faced complications along the journey. In each conflict along the way, Aeneas dealt with fighting and violence and could not find peace until the end.
“The Odyssey” is an Epic Poem which discusses the life story of Odysseus. The main focus of the poem is the journey of Odysseus and his way back home. Certain events distract him, most importantly; his encounter with the Gods, Goddesses. It takes Odysseus all of what it takes to head back home, including his bravery and intelligence. These qualities in Odysseus not only help himself but his men survive through the chaos of the journey called “The Odyssey”.
The better epic hero is hector because he had significant and glorified by the people. Also he was a strong and responsible leader. He led the army to fight the Greeks because he did want to disappoint his father and to have peace for his country. Hector risk his life for his country in the end his life ended in big tragically for the country of Troy because Achilles killed him.
Do you think Odysseus is a hero? If yes why do you think so? I think he was an epic hero because he did many things to help his people. He, would do a lot of things he would do to defend his people and he would of died trying to die for them to. He sometimes almost gave up but he kept on trying until he went back home.
Hector chooses to go to war, even though his wife and son beg him to stay. Next characteristic is that he performs courageous deeds. Hector risked his life to fight in war. "Once again on the battlefield, he was eager for the fight, and better fortune for a time lay before him(Hamilton 194).
He was married to andromache , with whom he had an infant son, Scamandrius (whom the people of Troy called astyanax). He acted as leader of the Trojans and their allies in the defense of Troy, killing 31,000 Greek fighters. During the European Middle Ages, Hector figures as one of the nine best warriors known, not only for his courage but also for his noble and courtly nature. Indeed, Homer places Hector as peace-loving, thoughtful as well as bold, a good son, husband and father, and without dark motives. they were alike in many ways, were both leaders in their comrade's eyes they both are natural born leaders are skilled with the sword and any deadly weapon that is put into their hands.
All four of these characters have many character flaws but in the end only one really lead to their downfall. Achilles is the greatest warrior in Homer 's The Iliad but he has many positive characteristics but he also has a few negative characteristics. Achilles was heroic, strong and brave but he has some negative characteristics such as anger and rage. I think ultimately anger is what lead to Achilles downfall. When Achilles finds out that Hector has killed his dear friend Patroclus, Achilles becomes very anger and vengeful.
Who needs a hero? Throughout human existence, societies have always looked upon heroes and champions as a gleam of hope in times of desperation. “Like a champion, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.” In the Odyssey by Homer the main character Odysseus displays many of the great qualities that define a hero and thus forevermore he has been remembered, honored, and reverend by multitudes as an epic hero. Odysseus’s courageous leadership in time of war, his volatile journey home, his strengths and his flaws, have made him immortal for generations to come.
Throughout the Trojan War, Hector was always fighting, "he could not be a coward... [i]t was for him to fight always in the forefront of the battle (Hamilton 268). While the epic hero, Achilles of Greece was, "[sitting] alone in his tent brooding over his wrongs" (Hamilton 268). Achilles, although he was persuaded by Thetis (his mother), ran away from the war (Hamilton 260). Hector stayed true to his country and fought for them without question.
He led many battles, and fought bravely. He even broke the pact by defending his brother Paris from being killed (Troy). Hector then did the bravest of all deeds. He took on the great Achilles knowing that it was certain death. "I would not die without delivering a stroke" (Homer).
The Odyssey, Trojan War hero Odysseus exhibits perseverance in the ten years of war and leads his men on the long journey home. Odysseus has to endure the frustrations of the war and the negligence that the gods show to him in his most desperate times. The pain he goes through exhibits his love for the special ones in his life, and it gives him the strength to make it home. Odysseus is challenged during the ten year war, but he will not give up, which proves how he is a true hero. The hero shows how he is a true hero through his actions and not his words.
Brave, strong, courageous. These three things are what Beowulf and Gilgamesh have in common. They are considered epic heroes. Epic heroes are people who are admired for great achievements made during their lives and accomplish more than most. Beowulf is very outgoing.
“Hero worship is natural to humans” (Scheske). There are two heroes who get worshiped; Beowulf and Achilles. Beowulf is important because he fought a monster to save a kingdom. Achilles is important because he fought to avenge his cousin’s death and also to help the Trojan war. Both if these heroes have courage and strength, but their values differ from each other.
The epic poem “Epic of Gilgamesh” is about a hero’s journey. First, one should know that Gilgamesh was once a selfish king that ruled over Uruk. When his best friend Enkidu dies, he realizes that he is mortal, so he goes on a journey to look for immortality (Sandars). In my opinion, heroes should always show loyalty and show respect to all classes of people. If the hero doesn’t show respect in the beginning, he will grow and will later on show much more respect.
The Greatest leader of Early Western Civilization Perhaps two of the greatest and most renowned rulers of early western civilization is Gilgamesh the Ruler of the city state of Uruk and Julius Caesar who was the first ruler of the Roman Empire. Gilgamesh was the ruler of the Sumerian city-state of Uruk Around 2700 B.C.E , likewise Julius Caesar was a leader of ancient Rome during the late republican period. Between the two Julius Caesar was a better ruler and would resonate more with people of modern day society than Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh was a great ruler however it wasn't until late into his rule that he grew out of being a childish vain man and into a great leader.
