Shaw came from an highly privileged abolitionist family in which he attended Harvard University before withdrawing from the school and became a Captain in the Union Army. They stood in the light of the setting sun and awaited to be called true heros. Throughout the movie Shaw’s actions showed faith and equality to the men. In the final battle Shaw got of his captain's horse and fought with the men on the ground. The strength, determination, and perseverance of this regiment helped shape the way African American regiments were to act and fight on the battlegrounds. They became the main reason that blacks in the North started to volunteer which marked one of the turning points in the war. “Glory” depicts the events that the 54th regiment experiences mainly through the eyes of their leader; Shaw leading up to the bloody battle. Glory is a movie about the Massachusetts 54th Regiment. Robert Shaw leads the black soldiers, who were freemen or escaped slaves. The men of the 54th were treated very poorly and not given the chance to fight in combat because of their color. Shaw gets them to fight and their first battle is a victory. At the beginning of the novel the main character Louis, an Akanbi Indian, lives a simple life selling baskets he and his mother make from ash trees. Louis’s father who had been a logger had gone on a routine logging trip years ago and never returned, leaving Louis and his mother to fend for themselves. Louis and his mother were traveling from town to town selling their baskets and living off the land when they were approached by a white man who wanted to recruit Louis for the union army. Louis’s mother was reluctant to let him join but, the pay would allow them to buy land where they could farm and settle down, eventually she gives in. Louis joins and is assigned to the 69th Irish brigade, known for its pride and bravery in battle.
In fact, nearly 200,000 fought for the North, and at one point the South issued a declaration that any black man taken as a prisoner would be executed. Most of the main events that are shown in the film actually happened. The first half of Glory follows the massachusetts 54th as they undergo the training which is brutal. There are times where Shaw seems out of his depth, such as when Trip publicly flogged for desertion ( standard punishment for the act). During the film's second hour, the regiment goes on active duty.

Based on the videos, I think James Shaw can be characterized as a hero. There are many reasons why I think James Shaw can qualify to be characterized as a hero. In one of James Shaw interviews he said that he was only thinking fast and trying to save his self. One reason why James Shaw could be characterized as a hero is because he helped save many people lives that was attending the waffle House in Tennessee like a hero would.

Green expresses the importance of determination towards fighting for rights and freedom. He states, “While we remember the past and regret that our present position in the country is not such as to create within us that burning zeal and enthusiasm for the field of battle which inspires other men in the full enjoyment of every civil and religious emolument…,” (Green 25-30). He describes the significance of creating enthusiasm and determination in battle, as it could inspire other men in the army to fight with enthusiasm and with a strive to win. Using passionate topics like religion and patriotism, he gets his audience to feel all kinds of emotions such as motivation, confidence, boldness, and persistence. He also inspires hope for the future by describing what changes could be made in the future if the Union army actually succeeds in winning the war.
After that he realized to get there respect he needed to show it to them. Slowly he gains respect of the soldiers and the officers by getting them new supplies like shoes, uniforms and refused to take the payment they offered him because the soldiers were going to get paid lower than the white men. Shaw’s leadership skills have changed from the beginning, to a strong and brave leader as he lead his regiment to the final battle to the front line. He even starved himself to show help people. He was a person who put people above him and never gave up on any cause he put his heart into. Never did he show weakness he was strong for the people he supported he was a hero. He didn't have to get better working conditions for those people he didn't have to keep living conditions equal after he made enough to survive he could have given himself so much more but he didn't he keep things equal.
