Political culture refers to the attitudes, values, and beliefs that people hold regarding to what government should do.
It tends to support the interests of the wealthy, and it is characterized by a low level of political participation among the general population. In contrast, the Individualistic political culture emphasizes personal freedom, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. It tends to support a type of government that opposes government intervention over citizens. The Idaho Constitution incorporates both Traditionalistic and Individualistic values.
Several influential social, political, and economic events occurred during the time period of 1960 to 2014, including the Cold War, the Civil Rights initiative that began with Kennedy, mass immigration, as well as several major turning points in American politics, such as the presidential elections of 1964 and 1980. These events collectively led to power shifts between the two major parties in the United States’ government, especially the shift from Carter to Reagan in the presidential election of 1980. The first major power shift in the time period of 1960 to 2014 was the shift from Jimmy Carter to Ronald Reagan, in the election of 1980. The 1980 election was a critical point in U.S. politics because it signaled the rise of conservatism, which began in the early 1960s and rose to prominence during the late 1970s and 1980s.
During the establishment of the United States, the problems the founding fathers faced helped to form a constitution that is still followed to this day. Conditions of the country in the late 1700s and today are similar- debt, foreign threats, and unhappy people. But if the government today were to face a problem big enough to wreck the country, the United States would not be able to survive. It would not be possible to re-establish the government due to a divide among the people, the lack of dominant leaders, and the condition that the government is in.
9.1.1. Conservative beliefs regarding the need for traditional social values and a reduced role for government advanced in the U.S. politics after 1980. In the 1980s War on Drugs was when President Nixon declared a war on drugs. This meant that he was going to increase the size of drug control agencies.
Society is always changing, from the 1800’s to now there have been many changes, big and small. Anything from simple linguistics, up to the ways criminals are dealt with have changed, some in good ways and some not so good. But overall, society has taken a turn towards the good end of the spectrum. In reading the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, I had gotten an insight of how the world worked in the 1800’s. Seeing how things like racism, laws/justice, and language have progressed over time is unbelievable.
Since the beginning of time the world has changed in many ways, one major way that the world has changed is the way we act socially. During the late 1980s our culture has plummeted yet went through the roof because of new technologies. How has our behavior as a culture changed since the 1980s? Our culture has changed drastically because our culture is so dependent on technology.
Texas Political Culture There are multiple classifications for political cultures Moralistic political culture- ones believe that the government should promote the public good and in order to ensure that good the citizens should participate in politics and civic activities Individualistic political culture- ones believe that the government must limit their role when providing to society in order to make the citizens able to pursue their economic interests Traditionalistic political culture- ones believe that the government should controlled by political elites and must be guided by tradition. I believe that there was a change in American political beliefs due to numerous different factors that I will outline in this essay. These include the Wall Street Crash,Hoover 's unpopularity and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s ‘New Deal’. There was a change in American political beliefs during the 1920’s and 1940’s this was partly due to the Wall Street Crash which lead to the great Depression. This changed political beliefs because as people financial situations declined they looked to the government, particularly Hoover, to help get things back on track with the economy. Hoover struggled to fix the problems that arose from the Depression because of his individualism ideology.
This individualism thrived during the Revolutionary War as the Americans created their own democratic nation in response to a monarchy that would not allow them to govern themselves (Bellah 142). Individualism fueled the American dream of bettering one’s life using one’s own grit. It was the defining ideology that led pioneers out west to start afresh. Up until the 1950s, however,
Political culture is an inherited set of beliefs, attitudes, and opinions the American people share about how the government ought to operate. Every country has their own political culture that defines their community. The shared beliefs of American Political Culture are liberty, individualism, equality, rule of law, and civic duty. These beliefs became the foundation of the New World.
Individualism is when a person has achieved non-conformity, self-reliance, free-thought, confidence, and finding one’s self through nature. Although individualism may be achieved in society, it cannot be fully achieved until one removes himself from society. Chris McCandless did exactly that; he removed himself from society by backpacking and hitchhiking throughout the United States to test and achieve individualism. McCandless’s last great adventure was to Alaska to fully obtain individualism, unfortunately, he died trying to find his spiritual belonging and individualism. Many people would think it was absurd that Chris left his family and threw his life away, and they would think that he was not justified in leaving society, however, Chris McCandless was justified in leaving society because by doing so he could achieve non-conformity and self-reliance without being oppressed.
Political culture establishes the backdrop against which politics unfold, it establishes the outer limits of what is possible, or even probable in the political realm. Texas political culture can be described as traditionalistic and individualistic. Texas traditionalist political culture believes in the values that policies are designed to preserve social order in the state, politicians come from society’s elite, and politicians have a family obligation to govern. While on the other hand, individualistic political culture believes that government should be limited when it comes to the lives of the public, individual rights of the citizens should be the main focus of a government rule, and a stronger support of personal politics rather than elitism. Texas also has a strong populism influence.
. The political culture of a society is a reflection of the government. The political culture incorporates elements of history and tradition that may predate the current political system. Political cultures matter because they shape a population’s political perceptions and actions. Governments can help shape political culture and public opinion through policies.
Political culture according to (University of Minnesota, 2017), may be defined as “well-established political traits that are characteristic of a society and consider the attitudes, values, and beliefs that people in a society have about the political system”. Political culture helps strengthen people as a community because people who share a similar understanding of the political events, actions, and experiences that occur in the country, tend to be united. Political culture is usually passed on to the next generations. These are the rules that encompass political culture which are formal rules but also customs and traditions. Political culture is also a set of unstated rules that a society considers acceptable for the political behavior.
