When Montag first held the books, he knew he was doing something wrong. (anaphora) He knew his life would become running from his wife, running from society, running from the hound. (simile) It all started when a lady would not let him set her house into flames like a camper starts a bomb fire.
In The Veldt created by the one and only Ray Bradbury, he uses multiple examples of author’s craft such as personification and tone or mood. These crafts were written into the story to help prove and point out the theme of influencing children with so much technology early on can not only stir up violent thoughts but, can also cause breaks between friend and family relationships. The first author’s craft that can prove this theme to be true is personification. One example is, “the walls began to purr and recede.” Although walls can not do this, Ray Bradbury uses it in his story to show how much technology the family living in the Happy Home have given to their children.
“Annabel Lee” is the shared named of a poem and a song based off of it. Edgar Allen Poe wrote the poem “Annabel Lee” in 1849. The poem is about a man who has lost his love and is in mourning. Tiger Army wrote a song based on the poem in 2001. There are many similarities in the two pieces as well as some differences.
Bradstreet uses an AABBCC rhyme scheme which makes the poem seem to be written in a calm and relaxed state. It is also important to notice that she uses end rhyme which makes it seem as if she was trying to have some control over her life, probably because she lost it due to the fire. The style of the text is really simple because Anne Bradstreet uses what is known as “Puritan Plain Style” makes clear and direct statements and meditate on faith and God with simple sentences and words. It usually contains few elaborate figures of speech.
In Li-Young Lee’s poem, Eating Alone, Lee uses many literary techniques such as imagery and tone to develop the speaker’s grief towards his father’s death. The poem is about a son who is mourning the loss of his father in which the fall brings back the memories of his father. When first reading this poem, it is very confusing and does not make much sense. Once the poem is analyzed, the reader can determine the distinction between life and death in the poem, where the speaker is missing the presence of their father. Imagery is a big factor in the poem for the speaker to communicate his themes of memory and loneliness.
In Annabel lee by Edgar Allen Poe the use of his tone words has an overall effect of the mood. He uses all of these connotative tone words to show the loving tone it has. The connotative words he uses are very deep and passionate words about his love to Annabel Lee. Edgar said that she loved him and he loved her. That they thought about nothing else but to love and be loved by one another.

In lines 14-15, Anne Sexton writes “They are more like stone / than the sea would be if it stopped.” (Sexton 4.14-15) This appeals to the readers mind and puts an image in their head of a still, lifeless body, more barren than a dessert.
‘Annabel Lee’ by Edgar Allan Poe is an eminently beautiful yet tragic poem centred around the theme of a forbidden love between two people, and the many obstacles that they overcome in order to be together. At the same time the poem relates back to a man’s undying love for his wife in which even death is unable to hinder. From the beginning of the poem, I realized Poe to be an articulate person who has a beautiful way with words, as he describes the origin of his love story between himself and Annabel Lee. This was shown in Stanza 1 where I identified him to be a kind and doting person, as he continues to talk about a maiden from the kingdom by the sea whom only wished to love and be loved by Poe. Another literary technique that can be seen in this extract is the use of similes. This is most evident in the line “L’épouse de Ling était frêle comme un roseau, enfantine comme du lait, douce comme la salive, salée comme les larmes.” This line gives a descriptive description of Ling’s wife. It helps us understand what Ling’s wife is like by comparing her to different things such as “un roseau” or “du lait”. The author chose these words because they are something that we are familiar with so that we are able to grasp them quickly.

This tells us that Annabel Lee is deceased and when someone talks about a death it is sad. “The wind came out of the cloud by night, / Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee” (25-26). This, also being from “Annabel Lee” Poe writes because he believes the angels in heaven killed her because their love was too strong and so they were jealous. This gives a sad tone because again, Poe talks about her death.
Ernest J. Gaines as a Storyteller In order to be successful as an author and engage readers effectively, one must incorporate certain elements. Ernest J. Gaines included multiple stylistic elements in his novel, “A Lesson Before Dying”, therefore, he is quite effective as a storyteller. One rhetorical device included in the novel was metaphor. Another device Gaines used in “A Lesson Before Dying” was personification.
She uses many sound patterns, all the while sticking to a fairly strict meter. An example of sound pattern used in the poem “In a Library” includes alliteration. “A precious, mouldering pleasure ‘t is… / A privilege I think,” (1 and 4).
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most notable poets as he has had many powerful and creative pieces that became very popular. As a young boy he had many problems growing up Poe lost his mother when he was only sixteen and left to fend for himself. Throughout his life he was a hopeless romantic who got into a lot of relationships. One of the most known relationships that he got into was with Annabel Lee in which he had created as his last poem before his unexpected death, Annabel Lee. At the time he wasn’t only mourning the death of Annabel Lee but also the death of his wife a few years back which is the reason that he wrote The Raven.
