Legalizing Prostitution in Thailand
In Thailand, prostitution has been regarded as a problem for ages. There is a shocking fact that the number of prostitutes in Thailand is currently more than 250,000 people (Havocscope). Even though prostitution is illegal in Thailand, it cannot be completely prevented. All attempts of prostitution prohibition become unsuccessful since it has remained for many decades. Prostitution in Thailand first occurred during King Rama I’s reign and it was once legalized in 1934 by King Rama V (Kabilsingh). In 1960, however, the sex trade was not allowed because of the coming of the new act that is “The Act to Deter Prostitution” (Kabilsingh). According to his study of prostitution in Thailand, Chalermpol Satthaporn

It is impossible to ask for help, so the law of legalizing prostitution becomes ineffective. Furthermore, it is believed that decriminalizing prostitution may let more women have chances to work in the sex industry (Sarakadee). It has also been argued that the country will certainly get a bad reputation after prostitution is legalized. When prostitution is worldwide promoted as an occupation to attract the foreign tourists, Thailand will no longer be recognized as the Land of Smile which has good tradition and culture (Sarakadee). This may affect other women who are not involved with prostitution but are judged as workers in the sex industry. However, the perceptions of those who are against the legalization of prostitution are proved to be wrong. It has to be admitted that not all people observe the law strictly and those people can secretly commit crimes. Although the act of legalizing prostitution cannot protect all victims from sexual assault, it can reduce risky places and increase safety at the same time. When prostitution is no longer unlawful profession, hotel owners, managers, and prostitutes that are involved with it do not have to conceal themselves as well as their places from police officers. This allows police officers to reach them and increase a better protection which makes people safer. Moreover, …show more content…
The first reason is that it allows sex workers to have rights equal to those of other workers. Decriminalizing prostitution leads to the reduction of sexual violence by safety rights. Since having sex in exchange for money is legal, sex workers who have a problem with the clients will be able to approach a police officer without hesitation (Listland). Also, like other people, prostitutes will be safer from exploitation and harassment as they are protected by the law of anti-discrimination. In addition, sex workers can be protected from HIV, AIDS, and other related diseases by legal access to the health care services. Sex workers are likely to understand the causes and effects of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and protect themselves by avoiding risky behavior. For example, for preventing HIV infection among sex workers, using condoms has been regarded as the primary weapon that is cheaper than taking antibiotics (Reio 95-96). It is necessary for sex workers to be continuously monitored by the doctors because they are involved in activities that put them easily at risk of infection. In Nevada, the only place in America where prostitution is officially legalized, sex workers must get monthly tests for syphilis and HIV as well as weekly tests for gonorrhea and Chlamydia. The decrease of cases regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is clearly presented after the progress of monthly test (Brents
If I had learned one thing throughout this year, it is that prostitution is one of the most unifying pastimes of the world. From ancient Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, to Indian Siddhartha, to European Candide, prostitution or human trafficking was and is a worldwide phenomenon. Despite not reading any literature from the Americas, you can always go to Las Vegas to confirm that their still is prostitution. Mr. Milroy explained they used prostitutes to tame Enkidu, while in Siddhartha a high class prostitute ultimately aids a man searching to reach enlightenment. Lastly there is Candide, a story about the train wreck of a life of a young male named Candide.
The sexist origins of the criminalization of prostitution tie into the issue of criminalizing victims of sex trafficking in that the blame has historically been on those providing the service instead of the individuals paying for it; in fact, “young girls are prosecuted at reportedly higher rates than even the men who exploit them” (Annitto, 2011, p.
Consequently, we have all asked these questions, what present prostitution? Should it be completely forbidden or overlooked? And should an economical method be used to help sustain the economy
Sex Trafficking is a form of modern day slavery that exists throughout the United States and globally. It is one of the biggest lies in society (Farley et., 2014). The Vanderbilt Law Review indicates that the majority of prostitutes do not enter the prostitution lifestyle on their own free will choice, but instead becomes a prostitute due to a variety of vulnerabilities that both pimps and traffickers exploit. This explains why young women get blindsided and think they are becoming a prostitute when in reality they are a sex trafficking victim (Elrod 2015). When the United States made prostitution illegal, it did not change the mentality of the johns.
This study examines the factors responsible for why sex work is legalized in some nations, but remains restricted in others. The reason for this divide can be explained by a variety of factors. Specifically, we focus on health issues and the research entities like the World Health Organization (WHO) have conducted research regarding the prevention of HIV/AIDs as the primary incentive towards legalization
In the past few decades, a debate has arisen over the legalization of prostitution in America. Proponents of the cause claim that legalizing and regulating it would bring about a reduction in crime, improve public health, aid the poor, boost tax revenue, improve conditions for existing prostitutes, and allow those who willfully choose this path to do so without fear of punishment. Opponents claim the practice to be immoral and believe that permitting prostitution would escalate sexually transmitted diseases, cause increases in human trafficking, and further the oppression of
Prostitution is a widely recognized topic, anyone and anywhere can get involved into this line of work with just one thing, themselves. Do the men, women and children really have a choice whether or not they want to use their bodies to earn a living? Or are they forced by outside influences that make them have no other choice. Preliminary research covered numerous topics about prostitution; When the victims started and why they started was not uncovered by these findings. There have not been a sufficient interviews with these subjects to
Often, violence is found in prostitution. A study shows that “Of the 116 sex workers who
The United States prides itself in being “the land of the free” and the “land of opportunity,” yet this is not the case for the many victims of sex trafficking that reside in the U.S. Despite relatively strict legislation and visible media exposure of this crime against humanity, the United States continues to be a destination point for many victims of sex trafficking. Many Americans are surprised that this could happen here despite laws and organizations promoting awareness. A combination of American cultural attitudes toward the sex industry, both positive and negative, the ineffective enforcement of laws, and the high profitability for organized criminals are responsible for the persistence of sex trafficking to the United States.
Can the government tax this kind of trade and profiteer on this profitable business? Or is it necessary to apply all kinds of legal, social and cultural prohibitions and measures against prostitution in order to eliminate it? One of the strongest arguments of legalization of prostitution is decreasing crimes and violence in sex industry. It’s not a secret that prostitution is a dangerous profession, and brothels-keepers very often allow their clients to scoff at prostitutes, to beat and humiliate them for a special fee.
Prostitution Prostitution can be defined as the provision of sexual services for money. The word “prostitute” became common in the of 18th century. During the ancient times this kind of services had been supplied for economic rewards mainly by courtesans, concubines or slaves. Courtesans and concubines often held high positions in traditional societies. The main feature of modern prostitution is that women and men tend not to know each other.
Over the years there have been many controversial ethical issues which are still debated in the 21st century. In today’s modern society one such controversial issue is prostitution. Prostitution can be defined as “The act or practice of engaging in sexual intercourse for money” (Deigh, 2010, p.29). Prostitution is the oldest profession of all. However the ethics of prostitution is still unclear between many societies.
sex workers rejected the word prostitutes and want people to use the term sex workers .Sex workers can also mean anyone is a sexual nature and limited to prostitutes. Some prostitutes seek customers on the street or they seek in public places. Both prostitutes and their clients face the risk of sexual transmitted disease and even HIV/AIDS. Prostitution all over the world is related to alcohol abuse and drug abuse.
Prostitutes are people, too. Prostitution is such a complex issue; no one ever scratches the surface of sex work. Prostitution is commonly known as the world 's oldest profession yet has been outlawed in forty-nine out of the fifty states in the United States. Legal-prostitution can require all sex workers to practice safe sex as well as get tested frequently to reduce the spread of diseases. Reduction of violence against women starts with the availability of sex.
Firstly, legalization of prostitution leads to the impression that it is socially acceptable which further encourages the recruitment of prostitutes. Although it seems like legalizing prostitution may actually control and reduce the number of prostitutes, the case is actually the opposite. The core idea of legalizing prostitution is to impose a sin tax on prostitution to discourage its continuity and also to boost the country’s economy. However, if we think about it practically, those who are conducting illegal prostitution at present will never pay the taxes once they are legalized. So, there is no outcome of such action.
