There are many different stories that are intended to explain creation. It’s interesting to look at the similarities and differences of these stories. After reading the creation stories of the Iroquois and the Judeo-Christians, I noticed quite a few similarities and differences. Starting with similarities, in my opinion, one of the more significant similarities is the use of the tree. In both the Judeo-Christian story and the Iroquois story, the tree was what ended up causing problems for the people in the story.
The White Dawn follows the lives of three whalers, who are stranded and then saved by the native Inuit. The sailors Pilee, Portagee, and Kakuktak, each have their own way of fitting in and connecting with the people. They have to deal with people whom they cannot talk to, and who share different customs. It can be argued that Kakuktak is the most successful in his quest to integrate himself within the tribe.
Today we have two stories, both based on same topic; Creation of earth. One is called the Iroquois story of creation, which is about the woman that fell from the sky. Then we have the Genesis Creation story which is about how god created the earth.
The college board’s decision to shift to a consensus perspective more accurately reflects the era of 1491- 1607, because both Europe and North America were homes to complex and diverse societies with their own distinctive cultures. Therefore, each group adopted and improved aspects of each other’s culture, skills and interacted from the beginning. Even though they both had unique and individual ideas and beliefs about gods, they still shared some similarities. Misunderstandings and differences between the Europeans and Native Americans resulted in years of interaction. Each continent was diverse, different and unique on it’s own.
During the American Colonial period, the primary focus of colonists was to establish their own settlements in order to survive in the new continent. However, many of them believed that it was their responsibility to Christianize and civilize Native Americans. The educational institutions they established became the forerunners of the boarding schools which arose later in the 19th century both in the United States and in Canada (Stout 1). The aim of these schools was to resolve the so called “Indian-Problem” and to assimilate American Indians by separating Native children from their families and teaching them the American or the Canadian way of life (Trafzer, Keller and Sisquoc 14). Children in boarding schools were taught to be ashamed of and to reject their cultural heritage, ancestors and spiritual traditions (Chansonneuve 43).
The Iroquois creation story is a renowned Native American myth written by a Tuscarora historian, David Cusick. He is also the author of David Cusick’s Sketches of Ancient History of the Six Nations, which is known to be the first Indian-written history printed in the English language (Radus). The Iroquois creation myth exists in twenty-five other versions. It describes how the world was created from the Native American perspective. It begins with a sky woman who falls down into the dark world.
In "Unity and Diversity" Cultural Universals are all of the behavior patterns and institutions that have been found in all known cultures (Light and Kathleen 449). There are at least four thousand different cultural traditions throughout the whole world. Many people have more than one cultural traditions. Native Americans and Cuban traditions are different in Dance 's, Marriage, and Religion.
I personally do not believe that syncretism is not a good description of the situation of the native people in North America. The Amerindians had a very different culture, some of which involved sacred rituals, sacrifices, worshiping the earth etc. Although there were many religious similarities between the Christian and native cultures, however the Europeans, which included the Spanish, English and French came and took over the land, gaining control. For example, in Mexico, the priests won the trust of the Amerindians, and took control of educating their children. However, instead of teaching them both Indian and European languages and arts, they only taught them Europeans.
NATIVE AMERICAN SOCIETIES: 1. Both civilizations were made up of bloodthirsty savages. A difference between the two is that the Mesoamericans were cannibals and the Mississippians buried their dead in mounds. 2. They lived in agricultural societies so if it was too hot or cold or they did not get enough rain fall, then their crops could not grow.
What is your understanding of the issue in general? Aboriginals or First Nations in Canada were living peacefully with their tribe until the first settlers had came to Canada. The First Nations have long been discriminated and harshly treated ever since then. In the beginning, the new settlers had taken away the lands that the First Nations were living on.
