What is globalization?
Globalization is a complex subject. Essentially, it is how nations interact with one another. These interactions are various, but the root cause of globalization is commerce. This is not a new process, for example, trade routes from Europe to Asia date back centuries with the Silk Road, as well as the lesser known Roman/Indian trade route, and Incense Route. In modern times, globalization has progressed to not only spread goods, but additionally investment, philosophy, knowledge, and ideology. Is it good, bad, or inevitable?

In our last reading in the section about Global System Theory, this was made clear as globalization's path was defined with the advancement of markets in Europe following technological discovery in the 1500’s. Then, European countries centralized their investment heavy focus on themselves, looking outward for resources and cheap unskilled labor. They were able to retain their new wealth by having militaristic force to protect themselves and enforce their trade routes. The reason globalization has really come to a head in the past century has been due to advancements in technology. This is also mentioned in the reading about Global Culture Theory, how modern technological innovation pushed the envelope for globalization. In specific, transportation of people, goods, and information technologies have all advanced at incredible speed. Today investment can be made in fractions of a second thanks to the internet, super cargo ships are capable of holding tremendous amounts of goods (a Maersk Triple E class ship can carry 165,000 tonnes), and people are able to travel with relative ease around the globe on aircrafts such as a Boeing 747 that can cruise at 575 miles per hour. I find myself agreeing the most with World Culture Theory. This allows for the individual to consider the other players out there, and in essence, what it suggests is that people are becoming globally aware. I no longer just consider myself one person from the northeastern part of America. I’m a person living on our spaceship Earth as we are being propelled throughout the cosmos. I come from a certain culture with a certain government and a certain society and I am a person. This is just the same as anyone, anywhere on this planet. With this knowledge and perspective we can come hopefully come to terms with our differences and take care of the system which is giving us life,
