Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. were great influences during the Civil Rights movement. Both men were very influential during this time period, but held very different ideologies on how to serve the black community. These two intellectuals had very different ideologies in order to achieve equality, and they each worked in their own ways. Dr. King delivered his famous and powerful speech, “I have a Dream” on August 28, 1963. The speech was heard by millions and had a lasting impact on the future of equality in America.
Two of the most impactful people in the Civil Rights Movement were MLK and Malcolm X. The Civil Rights Movement was a protest for equal rights. There were many people who affected the movement, but MLK and Malcolm X were the most popular. The question everyone is, asking is ‘who has the better philosophy’? A philosophy is the fundamental nature of knowledge or what they believe in.
During the Civil Rights Movement there were many influential and important people that lead the movement, but there was no better leaders than Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Even though they both acted differently and had different ideas they both had a common goal, they were both essential in reaching it. One reason they were both needed in the civil right movement is both had extreme views on how to do things. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that peaceful protests were the best way to do things and also the most effective. Malcolm X on the other hand believed we should do whatever we need to do to achieve our goals whether it is violent or nonviolent.
The Civil Rights Movement began around 1942-1968. The main goal and focus of The Civil Rights movement was the elimination of segregation and for all African Americans to have equal rights and the same opportunities (Gates Jr.). Important leaders that were involved in this movement included individuals such as Dr.King, Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks who all made a huge impact in the movement (Janken). During The Civil Rights Movement many African Americans were mistreated in various ways. For example many civic leaders and general citizens were beaten by police officers for simply trying to vote.

On August 28 tons of people gathered to support Martin Luther King Jrs civil rights movement(Jajoubek 82). The civil rights movement was to help African American equal rights just like everyone else. It was in a nonviolent way so it did not hurt anybody all African Americans wanted was a change in the way they were respected and the rights they were given. Both Martin Luther King Jrs grandfather and father were Baptist Preachers, they were very peaceful people and never tried to harm anyone("Martin"). Martin Luther King Jr was a respectful person and would never try to harm anyone he always tried to bring peace to the world and bring equal rights but not everyone liked that.
The Civil rights movement was a long and hard fight for freedom in our nation. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the many people who devoted themselves and fought for the movement. He did it in hope to make the world a better place. Outraged and indignant, Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham city jail” addresses the events that took place in the name of freedom. Martin Luther King Jr. reflects on the events, through his use of tone, rhetorical appeals, and rhetorical tools.
Martin Luther Kings persuasive and empowering speeches played a huge role in the Civil Rights Movements. Through his peaceful protests and captivating speeches, MLK blew the minds of his followers — they tore down racial barriers, such as ending public segregation, that had been set in stone for decades. It was public figures like him who truly shaped this movement. Another popular public figure, Cesar Chavez, was someone from a different race but had almost the same goal as Martin Luther king, to end discrimination, racism, and exploitation inside America. Though both MLK and Cesar Chavez fought for their rights using none violence tactics, members of the gay community, (LGBT), did the opposite.
On June 28, 1964, the Black Nationalist leader Malcolm X delivered a very powerful speech. A speech called “By Any Means Necessary”. During the time of speech, the major issue of the United States was gaining the true rights of an African American. Although Slavery had been abolished, blacks were still treated as less than human. Over the years, they worked hard to get their rights and are continuing to do so.
From the late 1950s to the late 1960s civil for blacks in remained a burning topic in media and everyday life. Two of the most influential to the movement were Martin Luther King Jr., a preacher from Atlanta, and Malcolm X, an ex-convict from Lansing, Michigan. King, during this era, was most well-known for quite literally preaching for non-violent civil disobedience to create social change. Conversely, X vouched for a violent revolution, a sort of fight fire with fire for the time. For the 1960s however, the ideals of king would be much more advantageous to the cause of the African Americans; in that they had little to no respect towards them from whites and violence would only cause more disrespect, the violent protests would also end
Martin Luther King, Jr., asserts that the injustices of the nation must be fought. King likes to compare the African American struggle for equality to the early Christian struggle for religious recognition.
Imagine living in a world of segregation - constantly judged by color of one’s skin and not being permitted to associate with the “superior” race. From slavery to discrimination, African-Americans experienced this horror in daily life since the beginning of their existence. Due to the fear of severe punishment, blacks were scared to fight for equality; however, on April 3, 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio, one brave soul finally did. His name was Malcolm Little (known as Malcolm X), a widely acknowledged human rights activist. Although he supported black equality, he attacked the problem unlike others such as Martin Luther King Jr. did.
Over the course of the American history, black people were oppressed and treated unfairly. A few ways that society treated black people is by segregating them from white people, beating them up, and taking advantage of them. As a consequence, African Americans grew up in an environment were limited in their abilities, had hatred towards the white, and had a constant judgment from white people. These factors contributed towards the way society viewed African Americans, flawed, uneducated, and poor. Yet, a notable person who overcame these obstacles and made the most out of his experiences was Malcolm X. He made a dramatic change not only in American history but in African American rights.
Imagine our society if Martin Luther King Jr. never fought for African American civil rights. People can not ponder the thought of today’s reality without equal rights. He did fight for equal rights and even gave his life to do so. King wrote “The Letter from Birmingham Jail” on April 16, 1963 to defend peaceful protests or nonviolent resistance which is the reason he was arrested. It also says, people have the right to take direct action, because African Americans are getting tired of waiting.
Martin Luther King’s leadership and his beliefs had a powerful impact on the Civil Rights Movement. Their methods of peaceful resistance and civil disobedience to achieve integration, reflected his teachings. These methods later proved to be successful in achieving the goal integration of minorities when the Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964. Demonstrations like the bus boycotts and non-violent marches were just some of the acts the led to this result.
