In Arthur Miller's, The Crucible, having a good name was very important. People took great pride in being prominent. Although, there were some who would do anything to keep their prestige name. A few confess while others go as far as lying and killing to keep their name from being blackened. The preservation of John Proctor, Reverend Samuel Parris, and Judge Thomas Danforth’s reputation is on the line.
Everyday people go out to explore and wonder the community with different reputations, not knowing death could happen at any second. Whether you are walking around the block, to crossing the street. People worry about upholding positive reputations, because they have strong beliefs to be well known for their future generations. John Proctor did not want to raise his kids and live under a negative reputation, even though they already had a bad reputation, leading his to making the wrong decision in taking his life to protect his reputation. By doing this, John left behind his pregnant wife and kids, left behind an even worse reputation for his family, and wasn't able to prove Abigail guilty.
John Proctor denied to forget his sincerity in acknowledging his denial to deliver his life. Although he is sentenced to death and dies, he still sticks up for a trial of character, and succeeds. This piece of writing also works in an theocracy. Sworn in the name of God, both men and women, were charged and condemned of rehearsing witchcraft.

John Proctor, a man during the time of the 1692 Salem witch trials, exhibits noble traits during the play. Many characters in The Crucible succumb to dishonesty by virtue of fear. On the contrary, I argue that the character Proctor was an exception, standing out from the rest with his bravery. Proctor spoke up to Reverend Parris when no one else did, he confessed to committing adultery with Abigail, and he sacrificed his life to uphold the truth. John Proctor was not faultless, yet he displayed the most considerable acts of courage compared to any other character. John Proctor bravely challenged the accusations of witchcraft and tries to shed light on the truth.

Everyone makes mistakes and sometimes it leads to the end of a good reputation for yourself and could even lead to a tragedy. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, lies the most tragic character of them all who is known as John Proctor who portrays all the elements of a tragic hero being one that was very well-respected and has personal dignity in his name that he would do anything to hold onto. John Proctor took a great amount of pride in his name which lead to his tragic flaw in which he would die in order to keep his dignity.
The Crucible is a tragedy play written by Arthur Miller. In the play there was a character by the name of John Proctor; Proctor was a family man that made a huge mistake. A character named Abigail lived with proctor and his wife and his two sons. Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth, is accused of being a witch and Proctor has to make a moral decision in order to save his wife. Proctor showed a difference throughout the story and those differences also relate to Kohlberg’s “Developmental Stages of Human Moral Reason.”
John Proctor was a man of honor and had a well respected name in the town of Salem. Sadly he died tragically but as a hero. He was hanged because he was accused of doing the devil’s work. He was given the chance to save his life if he admitted on a piece of paper that he was working with the devil but he refused to tell that lie. He wanted his sons to be able to walk the streets without being shunned from the world because they deserved better.

For instance, the protagonist, John Proctor, is forced to make a choice at the end of Act Four—to falsely confess of communicating with the Devil and live to take care of his family, or to be convicted and have a pure reputation. Proctor’s ultimate decision to deny the false confession is virtuous because it restricts his inner guilt, saves his reputation, and shows a valiant stance against the insanity of Salem’s witch trials. John Proctor’s affair with Abigail Williams haunts him with internal guilt and tarnishes his reputation, but his decision to sacrifice his life solves these
John Proctor is a good person, he may have had an affair with Abbigail, which does make him a cheater and a liar, but he is also passionate, and tries to make amends with Elizabeth and get past the affair. In the story when John and Abbigail are alone talking, John says “Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin’ for more.” He says that because he is basically saying he isn’t going to cheat ANYMORE, stating that he has already done it. That shows he is a cheater and not loyal to his wife Elizabeth.
The Crucible is a play written in 1953 by Arthur Miller. When accused of witchcraft by his former servant, Mary Warren, John Proctor finds himself stuck between confessing to save his life or staying true to himself/his principles and face being hanged. He is torn between doing what others think is best and what is morally right, even if it means sacrificing his life. It is acceptable to sacrifice your life for your principles because it allows you to maintain your sense of self as well as preserve the respect others have for you. When you sacrifice your life for your principles, you maintain your sense of self.
The end of the Crucible is very suspenseful when the protagonist, John Proctor, is faced with choosing between confessing to a lie or dying for the truth. At first, Proctor is hesitant and signs the papers, confessing himself to evil, but before the signed paper is collected by the court, he tears it apart and is sentenced to death. This was his best option, for it stopped him from living a remorseful life. His decision to tear apart the signed confession was the most correct not only for himself but for his family and the community as well.
In my opinion John Proctor is the protagonist of the crucible, because there are some reasons. One reason for me is that John Proctor is starting the Salem witch trials indirectly. It is Abigail who starts the trials, but she only does it to kill John’s wife to be the only one John love and they finally can get married. Because of that the relationship between John, his wife and Abigail is in the foreground. Another reason why John is very important in the Crucible is that he has a strong voice in the community.
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is accused of performing witchcraft and contracting with the Devil. He is faced with the decision to either confess to or deny the accusations. Ultimately, Proctor chooses to deny the accusations and dies a martyr. Proctor’s decision to sacrifice himself is justified because he protected the reputation of those who died and risked being arrested to save his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. John Proctor’s death is justified because he was willing to sacrifice his life to protect the reputation of others.
